"Jay, you are going with me!"
Sophia yelled, her fingers clamped firmly around Jay's wrist as she began dragging her toward her car.
"No, you're going with me,"
Keifer countered, his voice dropping into a cold, competitive edge.
He grabbed Jay's other wrist, pulling her back toward his own vehicle.
"No, she's going with me!"
"No, with me!"
"I said with me!"
"I also said with me!"
"She's my best friend!" Sophia shrieked, leaning into the pull.
"She's my girlfriend!"
Keifer snapped back, refusing to budge an inch.
Standing right outside the main gate of the house, Jay felt exactly like a rope in a siblings' tug-of-war.
She was being yanked in two different directions, her arms stretched wide as they argued over who got to drive her to the university.
"Guys, I think I'll just take my own car," Jay muttered, feeling like a complete scapegoat in their family drama, despite the fact it's her own family now.
"NOOOO!" they both bellowed in unison, the volume making Jay flinch and pull her head back.
"Jay, you have to decide who's more important to you," Sophia yelled, her face turning red.
"Your best friend, or this dumbo boyfriend of yours?"
"Yes, Jay, tell her that you're coming with me!" Keifer yelled, giving her arm a protective tug.
"No, Jay, tell him that you're coming with me!" Sophia shouted, pointing a finger accusingly at Keifer.
"No, you're coming with me!"
"No, with me!"
"I said with me!"
"I said with me!"
Sophia was genuinely happy for Jay and Keifer, but there was no way she was going to let that get in the way of her sacred sibling right to cause chaos.
A mischievous smirk played on Sophia's lips as she suddenly released her grip.
Without the counter-tension, Jay gasped as she went flying into Keifer's side.
Her hand, which had just been held by Sophia, landed firmly against his chest for balance, and Keifer instinctively wrapped his arms tightly around her small frame to steady her.
It's doesn't even take 1 minute to heat to crawl up to her cheek.
Keifer blinked, looking at his sister in confusion.
He couldn't quite figure out what she was up to.
Just as he started to think she was finally surrendering and letting Jay go with him, Sophia's expression turned icy.
"Jay, you always betray me," Sophia said coldly, though the sparkle in her eyes gave her away.
"You even betrayed me last night! But now, you truly have to decide who you love more."
She threw her arms wide into the air, exaggerating every syllable.
"Me... your best, best, best, best friendddddd?" She then dropped her arms and pointed a sharp, accusing finger toward Keifer.
"Or this-your one-day-old boyfriend?"
"Of course it's me," Keifer chimed in, his voice dripping with sarcasm as he mocked Sophia's dramatic flair.
He leaned down slightly, tightening his hold on Jay as if he'd already won the prize.
Sophia narrowed her eyes into dangerous slits.
"Jay! Jay, answer me!" she yelled, stepping closer.
Jay felt like a bird trapped in a very loud, very chaotic cage.
Her head was spinning; on one side was her lifelong best friend, the girl who knew all her secrets, and on the other was Keifer-the man who had just made her morning the "best ever."
She could feel the heat of Sophia's gaze and the solid, confident weight of Keifer's arm around her.
It was a no-win situation.
If she chose Keifer, she'd never hear the end of it from Sophia; if she chose Sophia, she'd have to deal with Keifer's ignorance or sulking all day.
"Keifer..." Jay whispered softly.
A triumphant smirk spread across Keifer's face.
He adjusted his stance, ready to lead her to his car, fully expecting her to choose him.
But his victory was short-lived. His expectations were instantly washed away in a flood of disappointment when she continued.
"...let me go with Soph."
The change in Keifer's expression was priceless.
His jaw practically hit the pavement, his eyes wide with shock and betrayal.
Beside them, Sophia let out a loud, victorious cackle, mockingly pulling up her imaginary collar as she preened in her triumph.
Keifer stared at Jay, his eyes searching hers for some sign of a joke.
"Are you serious?"
Jay looked up at him, instantly turning on the charm.
She softened her features and gave him her most irresistible, wide-eyed puppy look.
"Pleaseeee...?" she whined cutely, clasping her hands together.
"Just for today?"
Keifer's expression shifted, becoming a blank, unreadable mask.
Without a single word, he loosened his grip and let her go.
Jay stood frozen for a second, startled by his sudden silence.
She stared at him, trying to catch a glimpse of the playful boy from the bedroom, but he didn't look back.
Before she could say anything, Sophia grabbed her wrist and triumphantly hauled her toward the car.
Jay kept her head turned, watching Keifer's retreating back, but he just walked away toward his own vehicle, his shoulders tense and his face turned aside.
A heavy knot of guilt formed in Jay's stomach.
Did I really hurt him?
she wondered, her heart sinking.
She knew how competitive the siblings were, but his coldness felt different-sharper.
They both climbed into Sophia's car.
Sophia was in full "proud mode," looking like a general who had just won a decisive battle.
She was ready to let the world burn-or at least ready to set the road on fire with her driving.
"Jay! Jay! You chose your best friend! Now I'm going to make you feel like you're flying through the clouds. Ready for the drive of your life? Fasten your seatbelt! Woo-hoo!"
Sophia yelled, her excitement practically vibrating through the seats.
But Jay was lost in a fog of worry.
She managed only a small, forced smile.
"Hmm... yeah."
Just as Jay reached for her seatbelt, her side door was suddenly yanked open with a sharp thud.
She gasped, her eyes locking onto Keifer's.
He was standing there, his face still unreadable, casting a long shadow over her.
Before she could ask what he was doing, he leaned into the car, invading her personal space.
Jay's breath hitched in her throat as he leaned closer and closer, his scent filling her senses until the rest of the world seemed to fade into a blur.
"Keifer! What the hell are you doing? Get out of the way!"
Sophia was screaming from the driver's seat, her voice loud and indignant, but to Jay, it was nothing more than distant background noise.
All she could see were Keifer's intense, dark eyes inches away from her own locked to hers.
Keifer completely ignored Sophia's protests, his focus narrowed entirely on Jay.
He continued to lean in, refusing to break eye contact, his presence overwhelming the small space of the car.
Jay's heart felt like it was ready to jump right out of her chest.
She could feel the heat crawling up her neck, her body frozen under the weight of his intense, raw dark brown eyes.
They were deep enough to make her lose her mind and melt her heart all at once.
For a fleeting second, his gaze flickered down to her lips before snapping back to her eyes; he could clearly see the pulse jumping wildly in the hollow of her neck.
He leaned even closer, his hand brushing against hers where she was still clutching the corner of the seatbelt.
At the touch, a violent shiver raced down her spine, making her skin tingle.
His face was now only inches away-so close she could sense the warmth of his breath against her cheek.
His movements were steady and agonizingly slow.
His fingers gently uncurled her frozen grip from the seatbelt, his eyes never wavering from hers.
As her hand fell away, he pulled the belt back, but he didn't stop there.
His hands slid down, settling firmly on her tiny waist. As his fingers slid to her waist, she felt shiver ran down her backbone.
He could feel her breathing becoming fast and shallow, her chest rising and falling rapidly under his touch as she stared at him, completely entranced.
There was only the dizzying pull of his eyes and the way his thumbs traced tiny, burning circles into her waist, promising her that even if she chose her best friend today, she still belonged entirely to him.
Suddenly, the heavy intensity shattered as a wicked smirk pulled at the corner of Keifer's mouth.
Jay, still caught in a dizzying trance, blinked in shock at the sudden shift.
Before she could even draw a breath to ask what he was doing, he moved with swift, predatory precision.
He leaned in and pressed a loud, firm kiss against her burning cheek, the sound echoing in the quiet car.
Her eyes went as wide as saucers, her heart nearly stopping.
But he wasn't done.
With a mischievous grin, he reached in and hoisted her right off the seat, tossing her over his shoulder like a literal sack of potatoes.
"Keifer!" Jay gasped, the world suddenly turning upside down as she dangled down his back.
"Keifer, you asshole!" Sophia screamed, finally jumping out of the driver's seat.
Despite her yelling, a huge smirk was plastered on her face; she'd clearly been enjoying the show for the last ten minutes.
Keifer didn't waste a second.
He let out a triumphant laugh, stuck his tongue out at his sister in a classic display of sibling maturity, and sprinted toward his own car.
He was literally run carrying jay on his shoulder.
He yanked the passenger door open, deposited a stunned Jay into the seat, and slammed it shut.
Instead of running around to the driver's side, he took a shortcut-launching himself through the open window and vaulting over Jay's lap into the driver's seat with the agility of an athlete.
He slammed the locks down just as Sophia reached the vehicle.
Click.
Sophia began banging furiously on the window, her face pressed against the glass.
"Keifer, you jerk! Give me back my best friend! This is kidnapping!"
Keifer ignored her, breathing hard from the sprint, his chest heaving as he erupted into a fit of victorious laughter.
Beside him, Jay was a statue.
She sat perfectly still, unable to process the whirlwind of the last sixty seconds.
Her eyes were the size of footballs and her jaw was practically touching the floorboards.
She looked back and forth between the brother laughing like a maniac and the sister screaming through the glass, realizing that once again, she was the helpless prize in the middle of their chaotic tug-of-war.
"I told you, she's my girlfriend!"
Keifer shouted back, his voice vibrating with triumph as Sophia continued to hammer on the car window.
"You absolute asshole! She's my best friend!"
Sophia shrieked, her face turning a shade of red that almost rivaled Jay's.
"I swear, I am regretting the day I ever suggested she propose to you! I take it back!"
"Sheeee's myyyyy girl-frienddddd...,"
(Seriously author?)
Keifer sang out in a taunting, melodic tone, intentionally dragging out the syllables to drive Sophia into a frenzy.
Sophia waved her hands in the air, looking like she was ready to explode. "No! She is my best friend!"
"Oh, seriously?" Keifer asked, his eyes dancing with a dangerous, playful glint.
He didn't even look at Sophia as he leaned toward the passenger seat. Without warning, he pressed a messy, wet kiss right on the corner of Jay's lips, making a loud, exaggerated pop sound.
Jay was instantly paralyzed.
Her eyes went wide, her brain completely short-circuiting as she zoned out, the heat from her face feeling like it could melt the car's upholstery.
"Eww!" Sophia cried out, slamming her palms over her eyes to shield them from the sight.
"You jerk! Stay away from my best friend!"
Keifer pulled back just an inch, tilting his head with mock innocence.
He blinked slowly, his voice sounding like a choir boy's.
"Okay."
Then, he leaned back in.
He cupped Jay's face with his big, warm palms, holding her steady before planting another firm, noisy kiss right on her cheek.
Pop!
(What the hell am I writinggggggggggggg)
That was the final straw for Jay.
Her head fell back against the headrest with a dull thud, her expression a mask of pure, shell-shocked embarrassment.
Her eyes remained fixed and wide, looking like they were literally ready to pop out of her head while the siblings continued their war over her.
