The afternoon had faded into a gloomy evening, the clouds heavy and swollen, as if the sky itself knew the turmoil in Aarya's heart. She sat on the edge of her friend's bed, trembling slightly, the small note she had left for Hiten clutched loosely in her hands. The words she had written so casually now felt like a dagger: "Be happy with your new girlfriend. Don't worry about me anymore."
Her chest heaved, every heartbeat echoing in her ears like a relentless drum. She had thought she was protecting herself, letting him go quietly, but now… the panic clawed at her throat.
Her friend, sitting cross-legged beside her, spoke softly. "Aarya… maybe you're overthinking. Are you sure you saw what you think you saw?"
Aarya shook her head violently, tears spilling down her cheeks. "I… I saw him! He was hugging her, smiling like she was everything! And… I was just standing there, invisible!" Her voice cracked, trembling with anguish.
Her friend took a deep breath and grasped her hands gently. "Aarya… listen. You didn't see the whole story. You didn't know why he was there. You didn't ask him. Sometimes, our mind fills in gaps with fear, and we make a mistake."
Aarya blinked, her chest tightening. Slowly, realization began to pierce through the haze of her panic. The "sister's birthday gift," the sudden disappearances, the rushed goodbyes… none of it had been what she thought. Her heart sank, a painful knot twisting in her stomach.
"I… I misunderstood," she whispered, voice barely audible. Her hands trembled as she clutched the bracelet, now lying on the table beside her. "I've made a huge mistake."
Her friend smiled gently, brushing a wet strand of hair from her face. "Then don't waste another second. Go to him. Find him. He's waiting, even if you don't know it."
Aarya's eyes widened. "I… I have to. I can't just let him… let him think I don't care. I can't."
She bolted to the door, throwing on her jacket and sandals. Outside, the city was washed in the soft drizzle of an early evening rain, the streets glistening under dim streetlights. Every step she took splashed through puddles, her heart hammering as she ran through familiar streets.
"Where are you, Hiten?" she whispered into the rain, her voice lost amidst the patter of drops. "Where did you go?"
She retraced every path they had walked together—the small park where they had spent lazy afternoons, the corner café where he had teased her relentlessly, the bus stop where they had shared umbrellas countless times. She called his name softly, then louder, the sound echoing off the wet walls of narrow lanes.
Each step was a mix of fear and hope. Fear of not finding him. Hope that he was still somewhere, waiting, unaware of the storm raging in her heart.
At the swings in their park, she paused, breath ragged. The seat swayed gently in the breeze, empty. Memories flooded her mind—Hiten's teasing laughter, the way he had held her hand in the rain, the stolen glances, the quiet moments just the two of them.
She sank to the wet ground, her jacket clinging to her frame. "I… I almost lost him," she whispered, tears mixing with the rain. Her fingers brushed the bracelet in her pocket, a cold, metallic reminder of the bond they shared. "I can't… I can't let this end like this."
Her resolve hardened. Standing up, she ran again, sprinting through puddles, her hair plastered to her face, water dripping down her back. The city blurred around her; she didn't notice the passing cars, the distant chatter of pedestrians, or the glimmer of lights reflecting off the wet asphalt. Her entire world had narrowed down to one goal: find Hiten, no matter what.
But hours passed, and each familiar landmark seemed emptier than the last. The park benches, the playground, the quiet alleyways—they offered no sign of him. Her breath came in sharp, ragged bursts. Her legs ached. Every step felt heavier, every puddle a small barrier. Yet she refused to stop.
Finally, she collapsed near the fountain at the center of the park, soaked to the bone, her jacket torn slightly at the sleeve. "Why can't I find him?" she whispered, voice breaking. "I need to… I need to tell him I was wrong. That it was a misunderstanding."
She pressed her hand against the cold stone of the fountain, shivering. The rain poured harder, drenching her completely, but she didn't care. She had to find him. She would run through this endless night if she had to.
"I won't lose him," she whispered fiercely, tears streaming down her cheeks. "I won't. Not now, not ever."
The city around her was quiet, the hum of distant cars blending with the relentless patter of rain. Somewhere out there, Hiten was searching for her too, unaware of the storm she had just been through. And somewhere, destiny was preparing for their paths to cross once again.
To be continued.
