Chapter 53 - Chapter 53: The Duke's Mercy

The Northern Marches unfolded before them like a revelation.

After weeks of city streets and dungeon shadows and mountain passes, the open landscape felt almost obscene in its beauty. Rolling hills covered in purple heather. Streams so clear they seemed to glow. Sky so vast it made Jaren's chest ache with a longing he couldn't name.

Tomas walked beside him, his cough gone, his color healthy, his eyes wide with wonder. "I didn't know places like this existed. I thought the whole world was cities and roads and—" He gestured at nothing. "This."

"The world is full of beautiful places. Most people never see them."

"Did you? Before?"

Jaren thought of the valley—of its gray dawns and golden sunsets, its patient fields and dreaming orchard. "Yes. Once."

They walked in silence, letting the beauty soak into their bones.

The first Marches village they encountered was called Glenmorrow.

It was small—smaller than Stonebridge, smaller than anything Jaren had seen since arriving in this world. A dozen houses clustered around a central green. A smithy. A temple to some local deity. An inn that looked like it had stood for centuries and would stand for centuries more.

The people were wary but not hostile. Strangers were rare in the Marches, but not unheard of. They directed Jaren and Tomas to the inn, where a woman named Brigid served them stew and bread and asked no questions.

"You're heading to the Duke's seat," she said. It wasn't a question.

"Yes."

"Word travels fast in the Marches. Faster than you'd think." She wiped the table with a rag, her movements unhurried. "The Duke knows you're coming. He's... curious."

"Curious good or curious bad?"

Brigid's eyes crinkled. "With the Duke, it's hard to tell. He's a good man—the best, really. But he's also a man who's lost three children to politics and poison. He doesn't trust easily."

"Should I trust him?"

"You should trust that he'll be fair. Beyond that..." She shrugged. "You're old enough to make your own judgments."

Intel Gained: Duke Vex is expecting you. His trust is earned, not given.

They reached the Duke's seat on the seventh day.

Castle Vex stood on a hill overlooking the sea—a massive structure of gray stone that managed to be both fortress and home. Its walls were thick, its towers tall, its gates open in welcome rather than defiance. Guards in blue and silver nodded as Jaren and Tomas approached, directing them to the great hall.

The hall was warm, lit by fires in great hearths, its walls hung with tapestries depicting scenes Jaren didn't recognize. At its far end, on a simple wooden chair rather than a throne, sat Duke Vex.

He was not what Jaren expected.

Middle-aged, with a soldier's build and a farmer's hands. His face was lined with care, his eyes shadowed with grief, his smile genuine when it appeared. He wore no crown, no jewels—just simple wool and leather, the clothes of a man who worked alongside his people.

"Jaren," he said, rising. "The Farmer who saved my daughter."

"Your Grace."

"None of that. I'm Aidan to my friends, and anyone who saves my daughter is a friend." He crossed the hall and clasped Jaren's hand with a grip that could crush stone. "Elara told me everything. The warriors, the mage, the dungeon. She says you moved like water, like shadow, like something not quite human."

"I moved like someone who wanted to stay alive."

Aidan laughed—a genuine, booming sound. "Modest too. Sit. Eat. We have much to discuss."

They talked for hours.

Jaren told the Duke everything—not about the valley, not about his past, but about the door, the Guild, House Valdric's attack. Aidan listened in silence, his face growing darker with each revelation.

"Valdric," he said finally. "I know the name. Old family, new ambitions. They've been trying to expand into the Marches for years. My border guards have turned back three of their 'trading expeditions' in the past decade." He leaned forward. "Now they want the door. A dimensional door that could give them access to—what? Another world? Unlimited resources? An army from beyond?"

"I don't know what's on the other side. Only that I need to reach it."

"And you will." Aidan's voice was firm. "You're under my protection now. Valdric's people can't touch you here. And when you're ready to go back—when that door is ready to open—I'll help you however I can."

"Why?"

Aidan was silent for a moment. Then: "Because I've lost three children. Three. Two to illness, one to an assassin's blade. Elara is all I have left. If someone had saved her the way you did, I would move mountains for them." He met Jaren's eyes. "You gave me back my daughter. I give you my word."

The days that followed were the most peaceful Jaren had known in this world.

He trained with the Duke's guards, learning their techniques, sharing his own. He walked the castle's gardens, practicing his Life-Web Sense on plants that had never known a farmer's touch. He sat with Elara in the evenings, talking of nothing and everything, watching the sun set over the sea.

Tomas thrived. The boy—young man—had found a place among the guards, his skills honed by Jaren's training earning respect. He smiled more now. Laughed. Lived.

But always, beneath the peace, the door called.

Jaren felt it in his dreams—a pull, a need, a hunger to go home. The Watcher's words echoed in his mind: The door will open when you're ready. Not before.

What did ready mean?

---

On the fourteenth night, Elara found him on the battlements, staring at the stars.

"You're thinking about leaving," she said.

"Always."

"The door?"

"And the people beyond it. The ones waiting for me." He turned to her. "There's a woman there—Sera. She was a child when I left. A refugee, like Tomas. I taught her to farm, to listen, to be. Now she's old, and she's waiting for me to come home."

Elara was silent for a moment. "You love her."

"Not the way you mean. But yes. I love her. I love all of them."

"Then you should go. As soon as you can." She stepped closer, her dark eyes serious. "But Jaren—don't forget us. Don't forget that you have people here too now. Tomas. My father. Me." She almost smiled. "The Farmer who saved a duke's daughter and killed eight men on a mountain pass. That's a story we'll tell for generations."

Jaren looked at her—at this girl who should have been just another noble, but had become something more. A friend. An ally. A reminder that even in this harsh world, connection was possible.

"I won't forget," he said. "I promise."

The summons came the next morning.

A messenger from the Guild, riding hard from the south. He found Jaren in the training yard and pressed a sealed letter into his hands.

Jaren,

The situation has changed. House Valdric has mobilized—not against you, but against the door. They've gathered resources, hired mercenaries, secured allies. They mean to open it themselves, by force if necessary.

The Guild cannot stop them alone. We need you. We need the Duke. We need everyone who understands what that door means.

Come quickly. Time is short.

Velda

Jaren read the letter twice, then handed it to Elara.

"They're going to try," he said. "They're going to open the door without me."

"Then we stop them." Her voice was calm, certain. "My father will help. The Marches will help. Everyone who owes you a debt will help."

Jaren looked at the southern road—the road back to Aetheria, back to the Warrens, back to the door.

Home was so close. And yet so far.

"Then we ride," he said. "Tonight."

That night, a company rode south from Castle Vex.

Fifty guards in blue and silver. Duke Aidan at their head, his soldier's heart glad for purpose. Elara, disguised as a common soldier, refusing to be left behind. Tomas, armed and ready, his young face set in determined lines.

And Jaren, riding at the center, his eyes on the road ahead.

The door called to him—a pull, a need, a promise.

Soon, he would answer.
