Chapter 288 - Expanding and Deepening the Law

Translator: AnubisTL

The heavy wooden door of the office closed softly, sealing off the slightly awkward but determined figure of the junior student outside.

The room settled back into its familiar atmosphere, a blend of overwhelming knowledge and profound solitude.

Mentor Clark's gaze remained fixed on the intricate energy structure diagram, his quill unconsciously tapping a node as he broke the silence with a casual remark:

"That little rascal Viola... it seems she's taken another step forward in her understanding of the law."

Jieming paused, temporarily suppressing the lingering unease from his encounter with the junior student. He turned to his mentor, puzzled. "Hmm? Mentor, what makes you say that?"

Clark finally lifted his gaze from the diagram, his eyes settling on Jieming. His tone was flat but certain:

"Though she enjoys mischief, Viola is fundamentally an efficiency-driven person. She rarely engages in purely meaningless pranks."

"The fact that she deliberately sent you on this errand to find me suggests... she likely wanted to gauge your reaction to verify some new developments in her control over the law."

He paused, then added, "If you have any doubts, you might as well contact her now and ask. That girl's probably been waiting for this."

Jieming agreed and reactivated his communicator.

The light screen lit up, and Senior Viola's image immediately appeared, her face bearing the familiar mischievous smile he knew so well.

Before Jieming could speak, she cut in, "Oh, junior brother... judging by the background behind you, it looks like you've already reached the mentor's place. So, how does it feel to have been slightly teased by your senior sister? Feeling... hmm?"

She deliberately drew out her words, scrutinizing Jieming's expression.

Then she pursed her lips, feigning disappointment. "Tsk, still as calm as ever. Not even a hint of pain or anger from being tricked—how boring! I was hoping to collect some data!"

As Jieming listened to her words, a sense of bewilderment arose in his heart.

Senior Viola's wording and tone seemed to imply that she could now actively "dominate" or "need" the anger emotions of others?

Her emotional control now extended beyond mere pain?

Moreover, this influence seemed to operate without requiring close proximity, unlike before?

Mentor Clark, noticing Jieming's confusion, set down his quill and explained in his usual calm, instructional tone:

"For a sixth-tier wizard to advance to the seventh tier, the core lies in deepening the construction of the complete law they control. There are two primary approaches."

"First, expansion." Clark extended a withered finger and traced a horizontal line in the air. "This involves broadening the law's scope horizontally. For example, if you originally controlled only the law of 'temperature,' you might attempt to expand it to the higher-rank law of 'energy,' or even the law of the 'fire element.'"

"Those who go further can even make their law's influence more... conceptual and abstract, no longer bound by specific forms."

"Second, deepening." His finger then moved vertically downward. "This means enhancing the depth and precision of your manipulation of the law without altering its fundamental scope."

"For example, instead of directly targeting the objective, one could influence an event strongly correlated with it, indirectly and more subtly leveraging the threads of fate to trigger the law's effects."

Jieming's eyes lit up with understanding.

So that's how it works. Senior Viola's abilities seemed to encompass the nascent stages of both approaches.

"Senior Sister," Jieming asked, turning curiously to the light screen, "which path did you choose?"

Viola immediately straightened her posture on the other side of the light screen, her face practically screaming, "Praise me!" With a triumphant smirk, she declared, "Hmph! As a genius destined to etch her name in wizarding history, I naturally chose—all of them!"

"Nonsense!" Mentor Clark rebuked, his tone laced with severity. "The path of the law requires steady progress, step by step! Do I really need to remind you that greed leads to indigestion?"

Yet Jieming keenly sensed a faint, almost imperceptible hint of...satisfaction? hidden beneath the mentor's seemingly scolding words.

He instantly understood: Mentor Clark wasn't truly opposed, but was using his own way to remind Viola not to rush ahead recklessly.

After all, among wizards of the same level, the difference in strength often lay in the breadth and depth of their understanding of knowledge.

A wizard capable of balancing the "expansion" and "deepening" of the law undoubtedly possessed greater potential and combat prowess.

"Jieming," Mentor Clark's gaze shifted to him, his tone unusually tinged with a hint of warning. "On the wizard's path, self-awareness is paramount. Acting within your capabilities is a virtue."

"But remember, never underestimate yourself or confine yourself to a self-imposed prison. Don't let others' advancement speed disrupt your own pace. If you have the capacity, strive to refine yourself to the limit at each stage, solidifying your foundation... This will greatly benefit your future path."

These words struck Jieming's heart like the morning bell and evening drum, resonating deeply within him.

His expression turned solemn as he bowed respectfully. "Your student will heed your teachings, Mentor."

"As for you..." Clark turned to Viola on the light screen.

"I never imagined you'd reach this stage in less than three hundred years. I thought your previous reckless ambition would have stalled you for much longer. It seems... you're more strategic than I gave you credit for."

Viola beamed, accepting Mentor Clark's praise with pride. "Of course! Didn't I tell you? I'm a genius!"

"In that case, our genius should be able to settle her debt to me quickly, right?"

Viola's face immediately fell. "Ahem... well... oh dear, I suddenly remembered I have an unfinished experiment! Gotta run!"

With that, the light screen dissolved into a phantom shadow, clearly indicating Viola had abruptly ended the call.

Seeing the conversation had concluded, Jieming excused himself from Mentor Clark, not wanting to interrupt his research.

However, just as he turned to leave, Mentor Clark, without looking up from his work, murmured as if to himself, "At the new academy, may your appointment go smoothly."

Jieming froze, whirling around to stare in astonishment at his mentor, who remained hunched over his desk, scribbling furiously.

He wanted to say something, but Mentor Clark simply waved dismissively.

The pre-set teleportation formation in the office activated instantly, enveloping Jieming in a gentle yet irresistible spatial distortion.

In the next moment, his figure vanished from the office cluttered with documents and instruments, teleporting him directly to the plaza outside the academy.

Standing before the familiar tower, Jieming gazed up at its towering pinnacle for a moment, lost in thought.

Finally, he shook his head with a wry smile, stepped onto the teleportation formation, and departed.
