Chapter 2 - The Engagement Announcement

The sound of champagne glasses clinking echoed through the grand ballroom of the Lawson Estate.

Crystal chandeliers shimmered above hundreds of elite guests CEOs, politicians, socialites. Every powerful family in the city was present.

And at the center of it all stood Ethan Lawson.

Tall. Perfectly tailored suit. Cold eyes.

Beside him… Vanessa Hart.

The woman who used to be nothing.

And today, she was announced as his fiancée.

Sofia Reed stood near the entrance, her simple black dress making her invisible among diamonds and silk gowns. She wasn't invited.

She came because she needed to see it with her own eyes.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Mr. Lawson's deep voice boomed across the hall. "Tonight, we celebrate the union between the Lawson family and the Hart family."

Applause exploded.

Sofia's fingers tightened around her clutch.

Union?

Three years.

Three years she spent supporting Ethan while he built his company from scratch. Three years of believing they would announce their engagement.

Vanessa leaned closer to Ethan, smiling sweetly. "Baby, say something."

Baby.

The word sliced through Sofia's chest.

Ethan took the microphone.

"I wouldn't be standing here without Vanessa's support. She has been my strength behind the scenes."

Sofia stopped breathing.

Behind the scenes?

Was he joking?

She remembered the nights she skipped meals to save money for his startup. The loans she secretly took. The way she defended him when everyone mocked him.

But tonight, she didn't exist.

Suddenly, Vanessa's eyes locked onto Sofia.

Recognition flashed.

And then — a smirk.

Vanessa whispered something into Ethan's ear.

Ethan turned.

Their eyes met.

For a second, Sofia thought she saw guilt.

But it vanished.

He looked away.

Like she was a stranger.

That was the moment something inside her died.

And something else was born.

She turned to leave, but before she reached the door, Vanessa's voice rang out.

"Oh! Sofia? You came?"

Every head turned.

Heat burned Sofia's skin.

Vanessa walked toward her gracefully, holding Ethan's arm.

"I didn't expect you. Thank you for coming to celebrate with us."

Celebrate?

Sofia forced a small smile. "Congratulations."

Vanessa leaned closer and whispered, "Know your place."

Ethan said nothing.

Not a single word.

That silence hurt more than betrayal.

Sofia walked out with her head high.

But as soon as the doors closed behind her…

Her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She hesitated… then answered.

A calm, powerful male voice spoke.

"Miss Sofia Reed?"

"Yes."

"This is regarding your inheritance."

Her steps froze.

"Inheritance?" she repeated.

"Yes. Your grandfather has passed. You are required to return to New York immediately."

New York?

Her grandfather?

She hadn't heard that name in years.

"And one more thing," the man continued.

"You are the sole heir to the Reed Global Corporation."

The world went silent.

The same Reed Global…

The company ranked above Lawson Enterprises.

Sofia slowly looked back at the glowing ballroom through the glass doors.

Ethan was laughing.

Vanessa was glowing.

They looked untouchable.

Sofia's lips curved slightly.

"Book my flight," she said calmly.

It was time.
