Photos from the private dinner circulated everywhere. One image in particular Adrian pulling out a chair for Clara was being analyzed like evidence in a trial.

None of them knew it wasn't real.
Adrian stood in the living room, staring at the news on the screen. The city lights behind him flickered against the glass.
"I never approved this," he said, voice controlled but tight.
"It doesn't matter," I replied quietly. "The market already believes it."

The doorbell rang.
Neither of us were surprised.

"If you publicly deny the alliance," she continued calmly, "shares drop by at least 18% in the first 24 hours. Panic spreads. Competitors move."
"And if I don't?" Adrian asked.
"The market stabilizes. Your father regains confidence in your leadership. And Knight Holdings secures Asia before the end of the quarter."
Her eyes flickered briefly toward me.
"You both win."
I felt the weight of that sentence.
Both.
As if I were part of the negotiation.
"You're assuming I care more about perception than truth," Adrian said.
Clara tilted her head slightly.
"You care about control. And right now, perception controls the board."
Silence stretched.
She wasn't threatening.
She was stating facts.
"The press conference is already being prepared," she added. "If you stand beside me tomorrow, investors interpret it as confirmation. No formal announcement needed."
"And if I refuse to stand beside you?" I asked.
Clara's gaze moved to me fully for the first time.
"Then you become the reason the market falls."
The words weren't cruel.

Adrian stepped slightly in front of me.
"That's enough."
Clara held his stare.
"You don't have to love me," she said softly. "You just have to understand scale."
