Chapter 28 - 28. Kendrick’s Thoughts

The office hummed around him, the steady clack of keyboards, the murmur of colleagues discussing deadlines, the soft buzz of the fluorescent lights overhead. Kendrick sat at his desk, pen poised over a stack of reports, yet none of the words made sense. Numbers, charts, schedules, they all blurred into an indistinct haze. His mind was elsewhere, orbiting around a single thought that refused to be ignored: Elsie.

He had been back with her for only a few days, yet the memory of her absence, her sudden ghosting, and then her return lingered like a persistent shadow. The way she had walked into the room that evening, her posture almost casual, yet somehow heavy with unspoken stories, had struck him more than he would admit to anyone.

Her eyes. That was what haunted him most.

When she looked at him, there was a distance, a coolness he didn't recognize yet somehow felt familiar. Her gaze was layered, protective, wary, strong, and yet tinged with vulnerability she didn't let anyone else see. It was a look he had witnessed in high school, the rare moments when she withdrew into herself during exams, during group projects, or after a sharp word from a teacher. He remembered those days vividly: Elsie acting distant, almost untouchable, her gaze floating somewhere beyond the room, and yet her presence demanding attention.

Now, in the modern world of boardrooms and glass towers, he saw the same flame in her eyes, flickering just beneath the surface. It stirred a complicated cocktail of worry, admiration, and love inside him. Kendrick shook his head slightly, trying to push the memories away, yet they clung stubbornly.

She's stronger than anyone I've ever known, he thought, voice barely audible even to himself. She doesn't need me to solve it. She'll fight. She always does.

But that did not quell the ache in his chest. He remembered the subtle shift in her expression when she returned, the slight tightening of her jaw, the deep breath she took before allowing herself to smile at him. That smile, though warm, carried weight, like she had been carrying something far heavier than she let anyone see.

His mind wandered, unbidden, to their first years in high school. He saw her in his memory: Elsie, defiant, determined, the girl who refused to be small, who challenged teachers, questioned rules, and yet secretly craved someone who could meet her on her level. He remembered the cafeteria, the library, the hallways where her laughter had echoed, bright and daring, yet hiding layers of vulnerability.

He remembered how she would sometimes stare out of the classroom windows, lost in thought, and how he had always wanted to know what was going on in her mind. He never pushed. He never dared. But he observed, quietly, memorizing the way her eyes would glint in the sunlight, the small quirks, the way she tucked her hair behind her ear when nervous, the subtle bite of her lip when frustrated.

Those small, almost invisible details now flooded his mind, overlapping with the memory of her return. Kendrick realized with a pang that those were the same traits he had noticed during her absence, the ones that made her look distant, yet so alive.

College had not changed her. If anything, it had sharpened her resolve. He remembered the late nights in the library, studying together, her notes meticulous, her questions insightful, her presence commanding yet comforting. She had always been like this... unyielding, brilliant, capable. And yet, beneath it all, there was a vulnerability she only showed to a select few.

Kendrick knew he was one of them. He had been there, quietly observing, supporting, loving from the edges of her world without ever intruding. And now, years later, seeing her step back into his life with the same fire and guarded distance, he felt a fierce, protective surge he could not suppress.

He wanted to reach out, to close the distance, to remind her she was safe, that he was here. But he also knew better. Elsie would not want anyone rushing in to untangle her emotions. She fought her battles privately, fiercely, and he respected that.

Kendrick leaned back in his chair, exhaling slowly. His gaze drifted to the window beside his desk, the city sprawling endlessly beyond the glass. Lights flickered in office buildings across the street, cars honked faintly, and somewhere a bird called into the afternoon sky. All around him, life continued, steady, predictable, yet mundane.

And yet, none of it mattered. His focus was singular. Elsie.

He made a silent promise to himself, to her, to whatever universe that allowed them to exist together. I will wait for her. I will be here, always.

Not to solve her problems. Not to push her to speak before she was ready. But to simply be there. A constant presence, unwavering. A harbor she could anchor to when the storms of life became too heavy.

He could imagine her now, somewhere beyond the office walls, perhaps reflecting, perhaps planning, perhaps just breathing. And he would wait. He would be present, even in absence, ready to meet her wherever she landed.

She is stronger than I could ever be, but I will be stronger for her. I will match her resolve with patience. I will match her courage with unwavering presence.

Kendrick's thoughts drifted, gently, toward their shared history. The little moments they had experienced together; laughter in quiet corners of the campus, shared coffee in sleepy cafés, arguments that ended in teasing smiles and stolen glances. He remembered how she had made him feel alive, challenged him, inspired him.

And now, after weeks of her absence, after the piercing sting of worry and uncertainty, he realized that his love for her was not just admiration. It was rooted in something deeper: faith. Faith in her strength, faith in their bond, faith in the life they were building together.

He thought about the way she had returned, not with apologies, not with explanations, just herself. The same Elsie, strong and unbroken, yet carrying layers of emotion he could only sense, never fully see. It was as if she had walked through fire and emerged intact, untouched, yet transformed.

And he loved her more for it.

Even as he returned to his work, scanning reports and fielding emails, Kendrick felt the lingering presence of Elsie in his mind. Her absence had been a vacuum, a silence filled with questions he would never ask, a distance he could not bridge. Yet he did not feel despair.

Because he knew.

He knew her strength. He knew her resilience. He knew that whatever storm she was navigating internally, she would emerge whole. And he would be there, steady, patient, unwavering, ready to embrace her when she returned fully, when she let him in.

There was hope in that knowledge. A quiet, unshakable hope that anchored him, like roots digging into rich soil. He could weather the uncertainty because his love was not conditional. It did not demand explanation, justification, or immediate reciprocation. It simply existed, a quiet, luminous certainty at the core of his being.

Kendrick leaned back, eyes closing for a brief moment. He envisioned her face, her expression the evening she had returned, the fleeting flickers of distance softened by the warmth she allowed herself to show. He remembered every laugh, every subtle glance, every tiny quirk that made her Elsie.

I am here, Elsie, he whispered silently. I will always be here. Not to interfere, not to demand, but to stand beside you, steady as the world turns. Whatever you face, whatever you fight, I am here. And I always will be.

When he opened his eyes, the office hummed around him, the mundane rhythms of work resuming their ordinary cadence. Yet he felt no impatience, no frustration, only love. It was patient, enduring, and filled with quiet joy, the kind that did not demand immediate recognition but thrived in constancy.

He smiled faintly, a warmth spreading through his chest, a light that nothing could dim. Elsie was navigating her own battles, and he would be there, present, steady, unwavering. Waiting, loving, believing.

Because that was what love meant.
