Chapter 40 - Extra II: The Price of Defiance

Twenty-two years ago.

For the first time in his life, Robert Langston broke the rules.

Her name was Maria Bennett.

She wasn't powerful.

She wasn't wealthy.

She made him laugh.

And for a brief moment, Robert remembered what it felt like to be a man instead of an heir.

Then Alicia was born.

His daughter.

His greatest mistake.

His greatest joy.

He kept them hidden for years.

Paid for everything.

Visited whenever he could.

But secrets had a way of rotting beneath the surface.

Helen found out.

And once Helen knew, Harold knew.

Robert had never forgotten that evening.

The entire family sat around the dining table.

Harold at the head.

Helen beside him.

The two Langston brothers watched in silence.

Kendrick was only six, seated at the dining area, attending to his homework.

He was young.

He was innocent

And he didn't know that a few distance from him, his family was in chaos... that he would be a brother from that moment on.

No one raised their voice.

That was how the Langstons punished.

Quietly.

Harold folded his hands.

"Bring them."

Robert froze.

"What?"

"Your child."

"Helen..."

"I said bring them."

Maria stood in the grand mansion trembling, holding three-year-old Alicia's hand.

She looked so out of place among marble floors and crystal chandeliers.

Little Alicia hid behind her mother.

Harold looked at the child.

Then at Robert.

"So."

"She's yours."

Robert nodded.

Harold stood.

The old man walked toward Alicia.

Knelt.

And smiled.

The little girl smiled back.

Then Harold stood and turned to Maria.

"Leave."

Maria's smile vanished.

"What?"

"Take whatever money you need and disappear."

Robert shot to his feet.

"No!"

Helen's voice cut through him.

"Sit down."

Maria looked desperately at Robert.

"Robert?"

He moved toward her.

Two guards stepped forward.

Harold never raised his voice.

"The child stays."

Maria broke down.

"No! Please!"

Little Alicia cried as her mother clung to her.

Robert had never hated himself more.

Never hated Harold more.

Never hated the Langston name more.

But he couldn't stop it.

Because the empire had made him powerful.

And powerless.

Maria was escorted out.

Her screams echoed through the halls long after she was gone.

Alicia cried herself to sleep that night.

And Robert sat beside her bed until dawn.

The next morning, Harold entered the nursery.

He looked at his granddaughter and smiled.

Then he turned to Robert.

"You disobeyed me."

Robert lowered his eyes.

Harold's gaze hardened.

"But she is blood."

He paused.

"And Langstons do not abandon blood."

Robert should have been relieved.

Instead, he realized something horrifying.

His daughter had not been spared.

She had simply become another possession of the family.

Just like him.

Just like Helen.

Just like everyone who carried the Langston name.

And somewhere deep inside, Robert Hayes, the boy who once dreamed of freedom,

finally died.
