Chapter 33 - Chapter 33 : Aftermath

Madison stared at Glen's body lying on the floor, blood spreading slowly across the hardwood.

Her eyes moved from the body… to the knife in Henry's hand as he pulled it free… then to Dean and Sam standing behind him.

Her voice trembled.

"You… you guys are…"

She looked at the three of them again, her breathing uneven as the reality of what she had just seen sank in.

"You're not police."

No one answered immediately.

Dean slowly bent down and picked up his gun from the floor, checking it before sliding it back into his jacket.

"Yeah," he said finally. "That part was a lie."

Madison shook her head, backing away another step. Her eyes kept drifting back to Glen's body, then to the knife still stained with blood in Henry's hand.

"So what are you?" she asked quietly.

Sam stepped forward a little, his tone calmer than Dean's.

"We hunt things," Sam said. "Things most people don't know exist."

Madison laughed nervously, though it sounded closer to panic.

"You mean monsters?" she said. "Like… werewolves?"

Dean nodded toward the body on the floor.

"Pretty much."

"And you just… kill them?" she asked.

Henry wiped the knife on a cloth and slid it back into his jacket.

"When they start killing people," he said, "yeah."

Madison looked between the three of them, still trying to process everything.

"And you just expect me to believe all this?" she said.

After what she had just seen, believing they were psychopaths almost made more sense. They had killed someone—and yet they were standing there, calm, like it was just another day. That alone made a chill crawl up her spine.

For a moment, a frightening thought crossed her mind.

What if she was next?

It was the kind of fear anyone would feel after witnessing a murder.

Dean shrugged slightly.

"Honestly? Not really."

"Madison, trust us," Henry said, trying to keep his voice steady. "You saw him. Did that guy look human to you?"

Madison didn't answer right away. Her mind replayed the moment Glen had stepped out of the bedroom. The eyes, the teeth, the way his face twisted when he growled—none of that had looked remotely human.

She slowly shook her head.

Before the conversation could go further, the distant sound of sirens drifted through the street outside.

Dean glanced toward the window and muttered, "Great. That didn't take long."

"Listen carefully. When the police come, you don't talk about wolves, monsters, or us. You say you found the body," Henry said, hoping she would stick to the lie.

Fear alone should make sure of that.

An hour later the apartment was filled with police officers and flashing lights from patrol cars outside.

Madison sat wrapped in a blanket while an officer questioned her.

"You didn't see anyone attack him?" the officer asked.

Madison lowered her eyes and shook her head slowly. "No. I heard something break earlier, but when I came out… he was already on the floor."

The officer studied her for a moment, then wrote something in his notebook before moving away.

Outside the building Dean leaned against the Impala while Sam stood beside him. Henry was a few steps away, staring at the apartment windows.

"You think she'll keep quiet?" Dean asked.

Sam glanced toward the building. "People don't usually go around telling the police they saw a werewolf."

Henry didn't join the conversation. His thoughts were somewhere else entirely.

***

Much later that night the apartment was finally quiet again.

Madison walked into the bathroom and turned on the shower. The hot water ran over her shoulders as she tried to wash away the tension of the night, but the images refused to leave her mind.

Glen's face. The blood. The way those men had looked completely unsurprised by any of it.

After a while she stepped out and wrapped a towel around herself.

That was when she noticed it.

A dark bracelet was wrapped around her wrist.

Madison frowned and lifted her arm closer to the light.

"I wasn't wearing that before."

She grabbed it and tried to slide it off.

It didn't move.

She tried again, twisting harder, but the band didn't budge at all. The more she struggled, the more her heartbeat quickened.

As she stared at it, fragments of memory started pushing through the fog in her mind.

Running through the apartment.

The sound of furniture breaking.

Henry beneath her on the floor.

His knife raised above her chest.

Her breathing grew uneven.

"Wait…"

She whispered the words slowly as realization crept in.

Her mind replayed the moment clearly now—her teeth inches from his face, his hesitation before striking.

Madison stared at her reflection in the mirror.

"Is that why I was on top of him…?"

Her voice dropped almost to a whisper.

"…am I a monster too?"

The Impala rolled down the quiet street, the city lights sliding across the windshield as Dean drove. With Glen dead and the hunt finished, there was nothing keeping them in San Francisco anymore.

Dean glanced in the rearview mirror toward the back seat.

"So we're just leaving?" he asked. "You sure you don't want to talk to her?"

Henry leaned back against the seat and let out a slow breath.

"Yeah," he said after a moment. "She'll be fine."

The bracelet on her wrist would make sure of that. As long as the order held, the wolf inside her wouldn't come out again. It wasn't a perfect solution, but it was better than the alternative.

Dean didn't comment. He just shrugged and kept driving.

A few seconds later Henry's phone vibrated.

He pulled it out and looked at the screen.

Madison.

Henry frowned before answering.

"Hello, Madison…"

There was silence for a second while he listened.

Then his expression changed.

"Dean," he said sharply. "Stop the car."

Dean slammed the brakes and the Impala pulled over to the side of the road.

Before the car had fully stopped Henry had already opened the door and jumped out, sprinting back down the street toward the apartment building.

Dean watched him disappear and shook his head with a crooked grin.

"Run, Forrest, run."
