Morning came slowly over Ravenspire.
A gray mist rolled in from the sea and wrapped itself around the tall stone towers of the city. From the cliffs outside the Raven Guild compound, waves crashed against the rocks with a dull rhythm that echoed through the quiet streets.
Inside the guild hall, the main chamber was already awake.
Darius stood near the long wooden table in the center of the room, studying a map of the city spread across its surface. Small metal markers had been placed around the docks, the gates, and the outer streets.
Varic stood beside him with his arms folded.
"More scouts returned before sunrise," Varic said.
Darius did not look up.
"And?"
Varic pointed at the map.
"Movement along the northern road. Not merchants. Too organized."
Darius sighed quietly.
"So they are coming."
Kael leaned against one of the stone pillars nearby, sharpening his blade slowly with a small whetstone. The scraping sound echoed softly through the hall.
"They were always going to come," Kael said.
His tone was calm, but his eyes were alert.
"The Blood Council does not forget things like Elara."
Mira stood near the open window, watching the courtyard outside where several Raven Guild fighters were training.
"They already tried once," she said.
"And failed."
Kael gave a small shrug.
"They will not make the same mistake twice."
Darius finally lifted his eyes from the map.
"That is what concerns me."
He moved one of the markers toward the western gate.
"If Morcant comes personally, this will not be a simple hunt."
Varic nodded.
"Morcant does not waste time with small forces."
Darius looked around the room.
"Where is Elara?"
Before anyone could answer, the doors opened quietly.
Elara stepped inside.
Her dark hair moved slightly with the breeze from the corridor behind her. She had not slept much during the night.
Something inside her blood had been restless ever since the Queen spoke about the one who remembered.
Kael noticed immediately.
"You look like someone who fought ghosts all night."
Elara walked toward the table.
"Something moved in the capital."
The room went silent.
Darius frowned.
"What do you mean."
Elara hesitated for a moment.
She did not want to explain everything about the Queen's voice yet.
But the warning had been clear.
"The Blood Council awakened something," she said.
Varic's expression darkened.
"You felt that from here?"
Elara nodded slightly.
"Not clearly. But enough."
Kael stopped sharpening his blade.
"That does not sound good."
Darius leaned forward on the table.
"What exactly did they awaken?"
Elara shook her head.
"I do not know yet."
But the Queen's words echoed in her mind again.
Someone who should have died with me.
Mira crossed her arms.
"So we are expecting the Blood Council to attack… and now something else is waking up in the capital."
Kael gave a dry smile.
"Well when you say it like that, it sounds even worse."
Varic glanced toward the door.
"We should prepare the fighters."
Darius nodded.
"Already done."
He pointed toward the courtyard outside.
"Half the guild is already on alert."
Kael stood upright and slid his blade back into its sheath.
"Good."
He looked at Elara.
"So what is the plan, Queen?"
Elara raised an eyebrow.
"You are enjoying that title too much."
Kael shrugged.
"I just want to know if I should start bowing now."
Mira rolled her eyes.
"If you bow, I will personally throw you out the window."
Kael grinned.
"That seems unfair."
Darius allowed himself a small smile.
But it faded quickly.
"Jokes aside," he said quietly, "if the Blood Council is truly moving again, this city will become the battlefield."
Varic placed another marker near the docks.
"Then we hold the docks."
Mira pointed at the outer wall.
"I will take the eastern gate."
Kael nodded.
"And I will deal with whoever comes through the middle."
Everyone in the room slowly turned toward Elara.
She looked down at the map for a moment.
Her blood pulsed softly beneath her skin.
Then she spoke calmly.
"We do not wait for them to surround us."
Darius frowned slightly.
"What do you suggest."
Elara placed her finger on the northern road marker.
"We meet them before they reach the city."
Kael's eyes brightened.
"Now that sounds like a plan."
Varic tilted his head.
"That is risky."
"Yes," Elara said.
"But if Morcant reaches the gates with a full force, the city will suffer."
Silence settled over the room.
Finally Darius nodded slowly.
"Then we move before sunset."
He turned toward the door.
"I will gather the captains."
Varic followed him out.
Mira moved toward the courtyard.
Kael stayed behind with Elara for a moment.
He studied her quietly.
"You are worried."
Elara looked at him.
"Yes."
Kael tilted his head.
"That creature in the capital."
Elara nodded slowly.
"I think it knows something about the Queen."
Kael exhaled slowly.
"That just keeps getting better."
Elara gave a faint smile.
"Does it."
Kael shrugged.
"Well if ancient monsters start joining this war, at least things will not be boring."
Elara laughed softly.
For a brief moment, the tension in the room eased.
But far away in the capital, beneath the Blood Council tower, the sealed chamber trembled again.
The creature behind the vault door had not returned to sleep.
It was awake now.
And it was remembering the last time the throne ruled the world.
