Chapter 14 - Chapter 14:

"Char!"

With a cheerful voice, the fire-type starter of the Kanto region appeared on the battlefield. It excitedly looked around at the crowd before waving at them.

"Charmander!"

However, its excitement was cut short by orange haired boy's command.

"Would you stop that? Focus on the battle, you dumbass."

Maybe Cross had forgotten, or maybe he did not care about the fact that a microphone was attached to him to make giving commands easier among the loud cheers of the crowd. Moreover, the size of the battlefield sometimes made it hard for people with low voices to give commands.

"That's not a way to treat a Pokémon," Misty yelled along with the rest of the crowd at the downed expression of Charmander. But the orange-haired boy ignored them all, only waiting for the match to start.

The referee looked at the gym leader, who was staring at the boy with a frown, and when the latter nodded, the referee raised the flag in his hand.

"Ready?" He asked, and when the two nodded, he dropped his arm down. "Begin!"

"[Belly Drum]."

"Onix, [Rock Polish] and then [Rock Throw]."

With a speed unlike its large form, the rock serpent created large boulders and started hurling them at its opponent.

"Don't stand still, you idiot, dodge," Cross commanded with annoyance.

Charmander gulped at the sight of four rocks coming at it before easily dodging the three, but was almost hit by the fourth.

"Tsk." The orange-haired boy clicked his tongue before ordering once again. "Run towards it and use [Brick Break]."

"Keep using [Rock Throw]," Flint ordered simply.

The fire lizard started running and dodged a few rocks while using [Brick Break] to destroy the ones it could not.

The gym leader looked at the fire-type and nodded. "It has good improvising skills."

However, its trainer was not happy but refrained from saying anything for the moment.

The rock serpent kept throwing rocks, which the fire-type destroyed, but it also meant the latter could not approach the Onix as well until one of the throws finally connected.

~Bang~

The fire-type was hit squarely in the chest by a rock and was sent flying backwards.

An angry scowl marred Cross's face. "If you can't get close, then attack from a distance. Use [Flamethrower]."

Charmander struggled to get up after taking a super-effective attack. It had also been injured from the earlier [Belly Drum], which might have made it stronger, but also took a considerable amount of health and stamina.

The fire lizard opened its mouth before firing a torrent of orangish-red fire, which the rock serpent took head-on without even a wince.

"[Defence Curl] and [Roll Out]," Flint ordered, taking the chance to set up his commands while the fire lizard tried to burn the rock serpent, but failing miserably at it.

The moment [Flamethrower] ended, Onix, with speed unlike for something its size, rolled towards the fire lizard.

Everyone, watching as well as the gym leader, knew this move would end the Charmander if it did not do something to counter it. And how did the fire lizard counter the [Roll Out]?

"[Fire Blast]!" Cross ordered.

Charmander gathered all the remaining fire-type energy in its body and sent out a five-pointed star of fire. However, unlike the [Fire Blast] others had seen some strong Pokémon use, the one from the fire lizard was too weak to even be considered a threat.

Onix rolled through the [Fire Blast] and smashed right into the fire lizard.

~Bang~

When the dust settled, the rock serpent was standing proudly over the Kanto starter who was lying unconscious beneath its massive body.

"Charmander is unable to battle. Challenger, please send out your last Pokémon."

"Useless!" Cross spat those words at the pokeball to which the Charmander was returned. "I gave you so many TMs, and that's the kind of [Fire Blast] you use?"

The stronger the attack which was made into a TM, the more Pokémon Power was transferred into the acceptor of it. Since [Fire Blast] was among the strongest fire-type moves, it would have definitely given the fire lizard a massive boost in strength.

"But it does not matter how many TMs he has given to Charmander." Daemon, who was watching the orange-haired boy with a deep frown, could not help but say. "Charmander as a Pokémon is too weak to use a move so strong even as a Charmeleon."

Real Pokémon were not like those in the game that the trainers had played in trainer school to get used to battling, as well as gain some knowledge of the different routes.

In the games Daemon had played in trainer school, a Charmander could learn Fire Blast, and it could use it...but real life? That was different.

It was like asking a newborn to lift a truck. No matter how much protein shake you gave to the baby or trained it, it could not possibly achieve that feat.

"That Charmander is wasted on him," Misty said angrily before she joined the crowd to curse at the Alolan boy. "You are a shit trainer!"

Some trainers were hard on their Pokémon, but that did not mean they mistreated them. They might seem strict, but held a soft spot for their partners. Cross, on the other hand, was different.

Not only was he strict, but he was also asking from his Pokémon something the fire lizard could not achieve, no matter what.

"And where is the strategy?" Misty raised her hands in exasperation. "Did he think a fire-type could easily take on a freaking Onix?"

"You ask me, whom do I ask?" Daemon shook his head before turning back to the battle; the frown never left his face.

Cross, on the other hand, was indifferent to the crowd's curses and took out a second pokeball before calling his next Pokémon.

"Show them how it's done. Use [Fire Blast]!"

Flint's eyes widened in surprise at the Pokémon that had appeared and immediately used [Fire Blast]. He did not even bother to ask his Pokémon to dodge or block since it was impossible. He only signalled the Kadabras who had raised the psychic barrier around the battlefield to increase their output.

The massive star of fire, numerous times larger than what Charmander had been able to conjur slammed right into the rock serpent.

~BOOOOOOOM~

A massive explosion shook the whole gym as the multiple Kadabras worked overtime to contain the explosion. However, the heat generated by the attack still leaked through and made every spectator in the crowd sweat profusely.

Once the dust and smoke settled, the rock serpent that resisted fire-type attacks was lying on the ground unconscious. The attack was so strong that even if it was only half as effective, it did enough damage to defeat it quite easily.

~ROAR~

The fire dragon stood proudly and let out a roar to announce its victory over the massive Onix.

Flint returned the downed serpent to its pokeball before turning to Cross. "That's a really strong Turtonator."

"He is my second strongest," Cross replied with a smirk on his face.

~ROAR~

The proud dragon roared at being called the second strongest, but it did not mind the words too much either. Dragons were proud and thus respected strength. Being the second strongest was a motivation to them to chase greater heights, and the fire dragon was no different.

"Then let's make it a bit more interesting, shall we?" Flint spoke with a smile on his face, excited to face such a strong opponent for once. He knew the challenger was an experienced trainer and thus used one of his stronger Onix before. Too bad, the boy had started with a weak Charmander.

But now he could use one of the Pokémon he had reserved for higher-tier fights, around six or seven gym badges. It was a level at which he rarely fought since 95% of the trainers that challenged him were beginners.

"Come out and have fun." The brown-skinned gym leader pointed the pokeball forward with excitement.

~ROAR~

Another roar rattled the eardrums of the spectators, who very soon were left wide-eyed as well as cheering the loudest.

A large predator took to the skies at speed, which ordinary eyes failed to track.

Daemon and Misty looked at each other with wide eyes before the duo spoke at the same time.

"Aerodactyl!"

~ROAR~

The fire dragon greeted the foe worthy of fight with equal excitement. Without waiting for its trainer's command, it used the small tail to smash its shell armour.

~BANG~

[Shell Smash] raised its strength but also sent quite a few pieces of its shell flying all over the arena.

Cross nodded in appreciation at the mindfulness of his Pokémon.

"Hahahaha! I can tell you are excited." Flint looked at the Aerodactyl who getting impatient. "No need to hold back." The gym leader smashed a fist in the air before him and commanded. "[Agility] and then [Giga Impact]."

~ROAR~

The Aerodactyl screamed in excitement since they were going straight for the kill.

"We will not back down! Turtonator, use [HYPER BEAM]!"

The fossil Pokémon was soon covered in deep violet energy with golden streaks all over before it charged down at the fire dragon.

Turtonator took a deep breath and gathered a deep orange coloured energy that started distorting the air around the dragon-type.

Swoosh

Whoosh

Two colossal powers clashed on the battlefield, and the resulting explosion was something that people had never seen in their lives. Trainers and civilians alike were once again reminded of the strength that these creatures held, and yet lived harmoniously with them.

The psychic barrier trembled under the resulting impact, but despite the devastation, everyone knew that neither Pokémon were down yet. Why?

~ROAR~

~ROAR~

Two roars blew away the smoke and dust, revealing the view to everyone. The whole rock-type battlefield set before the battle was blown away. The land beneath was scorched black.

The Aerodactyl that had now landed on the ground roared once more before it slammed its wings into the ground. Immediately afterward, sharp stones started protruding out of the ground, fast approaching the fire dragon.

Turtonator gathered draconic energy as much as it could and fired it at the incoming attack.

[Stone Edge] met [Dragon Pulse].

The fossil Pokémon did not wait and flapped its large wings before shooting off at the dragon, parallel to the ground. Its whole body was covered in flying-type energy as it zeroed in at the dragon.

The fire dragon gathered draconic energy in its claws and grabbed the wings of the incoming Pokémon.

[Aerial Ace] met [Dragon Claw].

Turtonator was dragged back, but it held onto Aerodactyl's wings until it finally stopped close to the edge of the arena. It smirked at the flying-type's astonished expression before breathing out.

[Fire Blast].

~BOOOOOOOM~

Aerodactyl had no time to dodge, and its wings were closely held in the dragon's claws. The fiery star exploded upon contact, covering both the flying type and the dragon. Then, from the thick column of fire, the Aerodactyl was thrown out by the dragon as it crashed down into the ground.

"[Roost]!" Flint ordered, but Cross just smirked.

"Set it off!" The orange-haired boy said, and the very next moment, the pieces of shells that were broken off from Turtonator's back when it used [Shell Smash] lit up.

[Shell Trap]

All the pieces of broken shell around the Aerodactyl exploded immediately, creating another large explosion.

When the dust settled for the final time, the fire dragon was standing proudly on the other end while the Aerodactyl was lying unconscious on the ground. And to celebrate its victory, the fire dragon let out three more [Fire Blasts].

~ROAR~

"Aerodactyl is unable to battle; Turtonator is the winner. The victory goes to Cross Thompson from Hau'oli City of Alola Region!"
