Chapter 343 - Chapter 343 — Is It Strange That a Food Truck Owner Knows Some Magic?

Crimson lightning crossed the bay.

He didn't look back at the house. If Danton Black had somehow survived, showing up there again would accomplish nothing — the only confirmation available to him was elsewhere. He turned and ran, tracing a route through back alleys and service corridors that kept him off the main roads and out of every camera's sightline. The path had clearly been mapped in advance.

Central City's streets were mostly empty at this hour. The red light moved through the dark gaps between buildings without touching the streetlamps, arrived at S.T.A.R. Labs, and passed through the exterior wall as though it wasn't there.

Cisco and Caitlin were long gone. A few lights burned on automatic timers. The security system ran its loops, scanning corners it had been designed to scan and missing, by design, the ones it hadn't.

The yellow figure moved through the blind spots with the ease of someone who had memorized them long ago. Down the gray corridor. Through the wall of Wells's private room.

The AI was running in standby mode. The 2024 newspaper hung in the air, projected in soft light.

He went straight to the lower quarter of the page.

The Black Pharmaceuticals headline was gone. Stagg's bankruptcy notice had not returned in its place. The space it occupied now read: Umbrella Corporation Announces Cloning Therapy Breakthrough — Treatment Costs Expected to Reach Record Low.

He stared at it.

Umbrella Corporation. The name produced nothing. No memory, no prior reference, no entry in fifteen years of careful research. A company that had not existed in any version of the timeline he'd studied.

He understood the mechanism easily enough. Danton had already filed the appeal. Hundreds of co-plaintiffs each held their own copies of the evidence. One missing researcher — however suspicious his disappearance made Stagg look — would not stop the case. If anything, a missing researcher made Stagg look worse, at the worst possible moment, with every journalist in the city watching.

The lawsuit would proceed. Stagg was finished regardless.

Someone else would simply inherit the cloning technology.

"Let them," the yellow figure said to the empty room. "Stagg wasn't worth keeping anyway."

He had what he came for. He let the projection run and left the way he arrived.

In the concealed space behind the smart wallpaper, three living things regarded each other.

Jude sat on an overturned crate. Yomogi sat on the cart. Danton Black sat on the ground, wrapped in a borrowed jacket, still slightly damp, staring at both of them with the particular expression of a man who had been killed twice in one evening and was not entirely sure what reality looked like anymore.

Satsuki, parked three feet away and disguised as an unremarkable food truck, radiated studied neutrality.

"Jude." Danton's voice was careful, like he was testing the words before trusting them. "Did your cat pull me out of the ocean on a cart."

"What are you talking about?" Jude's smile was the warm, patient kind reserved for people who needed gentle handling. "Look at her. Look at those little arms and legs. How would that even work?"

"I was dead. And then I was in the ocean. And then there was a cat."

"A cat at the beach, at night? Danton, how much have you been sleeping lately?" The smile didn't waver. "I brought you here on the cart. I was at the beach. I have a cart. It's very straightforward."

Danton rubbed his face slowly. "You're not even reacting to the part where I said I was killed."

"That part seemed accurate, yes." Jude nodded. "I saw the yellow one with the red lightning throw you into the water. That happened."

A long pause.

"So tonight was real," Danton said. "I didn't dream any of it."

"Except for the part about the cat and the cart, all of it was real."

"I was killed." Danton pressed both hands to his head. "Twice. By something that runs on water and phases through walls. And you're sitting there like I just told you about mild traffic."

"Clyde Mardon controlled the weather and robbed four banks," Jude said. "It was in the news. The department's already setting up a meta unit. Superpowered individuals are a matter of public record in this city — have been for a few weeks now." He tilted his head. "Is a fast yellow one really so surprising by comparison?"

Danton opened his mouth. Closed it. Sat with the logic for a moment.

He had, in fact, seen the Mardon news. Everyone in Central City had seen it. The existence of metas had stopped being deniable the week the police department held a press conference about it.

"...Okay," he said, with the sigh of a man updating his worldview under difficult circumstances. "Are you a meta?"

"What makes you ask?"

"My heart was cut open." Danton said it plainly. "If I swam to shore myself, fine, I can explain that. But I'm sitting here with a heartbeat, which means someone healed me. And Elizabeth's condition improved significantly, starting right around the time she met you at the hospital." He looked at Jude steadily. "And you were at that beach tonight, and the yellow figure didn't notice you. That's too many coincidences."

Jude maintained his expression of pleasant, untroubled innocence.

"I'm not saying you owe me anything," Danton said, after a moment. "I think I'm saying the opposite — that I owe you considerably more than I know how to quantify." He paused. "So. If you have advice, I'm listening."

"One piece," Jude said. "When the case resolves and Stagg's finished — whatever you build after, keep yourself out of the front of it. No foundations in your name, nothing under Elizabeth's name either." He paused. "If you need a name for whatever institution you set up, try Umbrella Corporation."

Danton blinked. "Is there meaning to that?"

"Personal quirk. I just find it funny to imagine someone reading that name with absolutely no idea why it's funny." Jude smiled to himself. "The look on their face."

Danton stared at him for a moment, then decided to let it go. "All right. Where's the exit? I want to go home."

"What if he comes back?"

Danton stood, steadier than he had any right to be. "He won't touch me again. Not after tonight." He said it with the flat certainty of someone who had worked something out while being drowned. "I'll explain later. Or not. But he won't come back."

Jude raised an eyebrow, but didn't push.

He moved the wallpaper panel aside and let Danton out into the alley.
