Chapter 9 - Chapter 8 gravity's favour

Gravity's Favor

[Jay's POV]

The walk back from the cafeteria to the West Wing dorms was always a gauntlet, but today it felt like a victory march. We were a small army. Ten of the most influential students on campus were walking in a tight formation, our laughter echoing off the stone arches of the quad.

But beneath the laughter, my mind was a mess.

Every time my arm brushed against Keifer's sleeve, a jolt of static electricity raced up my spine. He was walking so close to me that I could feel the rhythmic heat radiating from his body. We weren't lovers—we weren't even "officially" dating—but the air between us was so thick with tension that you could have cut it with one of the silver steak knives from the cafeteria.

"Look at them," Rakki whispered loudly to C In, not even trying to be subtle. "They're walking in sync. Left foot, right foot. It's like their heartbeats are on the same Wi-Fi network."

"It's called physics, Rakki," I snapped, though my face was heating up. "We're just maintaining a steady velocity."

"Velocity, huh?" Erdix chimed in from behind Freya. "Is that what the kids are calling it these days? Because from back here, it looks a lot more like 'magnetic attraction.'"

"Leave them alone," Mica laughed, though she gave Calix a playful nudge. "Jay's had a long day dealing with her brothers. She doesn't need your teasing.

Actually," Rory said, tossing his football into the air as he walked backward in front of us, "I think she needs it more than ever. It keeps her grounded. Right, Keif? You're doing a great job of keeping her... grounded."

Keifer just chuckled, that deep, relaxed sound that made my stomach flip. "I'm just walking, guys. Unlike Rory, I can actually move in a straight line without a ball in my hands."

We turned the corner into the dorm hallway. The floors here were polished to a mirror shine—a fact I usually appreciated, until I saw a stray patch of dampness near the water fountain.

I was mid-sentence, about to tell Ella about a book I'd found in the library, when my heel hit the slick spot.

In a heartbeat, the world tilted.

The friction disappeared. My books started to slide from my grip, and my heart lurched into my throat. I braced myself for the impact, for the familiar pain of the hard floor and the inevitable embarrassment of being the "clumsy genius" in front of everyone.

But the floor never came.

Strong, steady hands suddenly clamped around my waist.

With a sharp intake of breath, I was yanked backward and upward. I didn't hit the ground; I hit something solid, warm, and smelling intensely of vanilla and rain. Keifer had moved with the reflexes of an athlete, his boots barking against the floor as he braced his legs to stop my fall..

I was pressed flush against him. One of his hands was spread wide across my lower back, and the other was locked firmly around my waist, his fingers digging slightly into my sweater. My head was tucked just under his chin, and I could hear his heart—fast, powerful, and definitely not chill—thudding against his ribs.

Silence fell over the hallway.

For a second, the only sound was our synchronized breathing. I looked up, my eyes wide and my lips parted. Keifer was looking down at me, his messy hair falling over his forehead, his eyes dark with a sudden, fierce protectiveness.

"You've got to stop doing that, Jay," he whispered, his voice hushed and gravelly. "My heart can't take much more of this."

I couldn't speak. I couldn't move. I was trapped in the circle of his arms, and for the first time in my life, I didn't want to escape. I felt safe. I felt... cherished.

Then, the silence broke.

"OH! MY! GOD!" Rakki practically screamed, clutching C In's arm so hard he winced. "Did you see that? That was a Level 10 Save! That was a cinematic masterpiece!"

"I told you!" Erdix shouted, pointing at us while Freya doubled over laughing. "Gravity is a Keifer/Jay shipper! Even the Earth wants them to touch!"

Keif, buddy," Rory called out, leaning against the wall with a massive grin. "You can let go now. She's standing. Or are you planning on holding her like that until graduation?"

"Shut up, Rory," Keifer muttered, though he didn't let go immediately. He waited until he was absolutely sure I had my balance, his eyes searching mine for any sign of injury.

"You okay?" he asked softly, ignoring the hoots and whistles from the others.

I... I'm fine," I managed to say, my voice trembling. I stepped back, and the loss of his warmth felt like a physical chill. "Thank you. Again."

"Anytime," he said, his gaze lingering on my waist for a second before he looked at the group. "Can we go ten minutes without you guys acting like you're at a middle school dance?"

"Nope!" Mica chirped, walking past us and ruffling Keifer's hair. "Not when the 'Chill Prince' turns into a romantic lead every time Jay breathes."

It was a very technical save," David added from the back, not looking up from his tablet, though his smirk was visible. "The torque was impressive."

"See?" I pointed at David. "Technical! It was just physics!"

"Sure, Jay," Ella winked as she opened the door to Room 412. "And I'm the Queen of England. Now come on, we have to debrief on that 'technical' hug."

As the girls dragged me into our room and the boys pushed Keifer into 411, I caught one last glimpse of him. He was standing in his doorway, rubbing the back of his neck, looking more flustered than I'd ever seen him.

He looked at me, and just before the door closed, he mouthed: Five minutes.

My heart did a somersault. The teasing of my friends was loud, the pressure of my parents was heavy, and the semester was just beginning—but as I sat on my bed, listening to Freya and Rakki recount the "save" with exaggerated gestures, I realized that I wasn't just falling for the floor anymore.

I was falling for the boy across the hall.
