Chapter 28 - Chapter 27 the comfort

The Calculus of Comfort

[Jay's POV]

Day four of the study holiday didn't start with a panic attack or a bus ride. It started with the smell of high-grade Arabica coffee and the weight of a heavy, warm arm draped across my waist.

I opened my eyes to see the sunlight dappling the Blue Suite. Keifer was still asleep, his face pressed into the pillow, looking nothing like the "Shark of the Boardroom" he had been in London. He looked like... my fiancé. The titanium ring on my left hand caught the light, sending a tiny blue spark dancing across the ceiling.

Fiancée. The word felt like a secret I was still learning how to whisper.

I tried to slide out of bed to grab my laptop, but the arm around me tightened instantly.

"Five more minutes, Jay," Keifer grumbled into the pillow, his voice a low, sleep-heavy rumble. "The laws of thermodynamics don't apply until at least 9:00 AM."

"Actually, the second law of thermodynamics suggests that entropy increases over time, Keif," I teased, poking his shoulder. "Which means every minute we stay in bed, the universe gets a little more chaotic."

He opened one eye, a playful smirk tugging at his lips. "I'm willing to risk a little chaos for a little more of you."

He eventually let go, but only after I promised to bring him a croissant.

The Library Bunker

By 11:00 AM, the Watson library had been converted into what Rory would later call "The War Room of the Century."

We weren't just studying anymore; we were synchronizing. We sat on the floor, back-to-back, using the mahogany coffee table as a shared desk. The floor was a sea of reference books, discarded highlighters, and the occasional chocolate wrapper.

"Okay, look at this simulation," Keifer said, spinning his laptop around to show me a 3D model of a self-sustaining bridge. "If we adjust the tension variables here, we can reduce the material cost by 15% without compromising the structural integrity."

I leaned in, my shoulder brushing his. I didn't look at the screen—I looked at him. The way his eyes lit up when he found an elegant solution was more beautiful to me than any sunset.

"You're forgetting the wind shear in the Manila Bay area, Keifer," I said, finally focusing on the graph. I reached over, my fingers dancing across his keyboard to adjust the parameters. "If you don't account for the July typhoons, that 15% savings will cost you the whole bridge in three years."

"See?" Keifer leaned back, interlacing his fingers behind his head. "This is why I proposed. You're the only person who can tell me I'm wrong and make it sound like a compliment."

"It's not a compliment," I laughed, nudging him with my elbow. "It's a correction. There's a difference."

"To me, it's the same thing." He reached out, his hand resting on my knee, grounded and steady. "I spent my whole life being the smartest person in the room. It's exhausting, Jay. With you... I can just be a student. I can be a partner."

The Group Chat 'Check-In'

Around 2:00 PM, my phone started vibrating so violently it nearly slid off the table.

[VIDEO CALL: THE SQUAD (10 PARTICIPANTS)]

I looked at Keifer. He sighed, but reached over to hit 'Accept.'

"SHE'S WEARING IT!" Rakki's scream was so loud I had to hold the phone away from my ear.

"Zoom in! Erdix, enhance the image!" Rory shouted from what looked like a pile of laundry in his dorm room.

It's beautiful, Jay," Freya said, her voice uncharacteristically soft. She was wearing a face mask and a headband. "But more importantly... did you actually sleep? You don't have those 'I'm-going-to-collapse' dark circles under your eyes anymore."

"I slept," I said, smiling as Keifer leaned into the frame, resting his chin on my shoulder.

She slept because the Prince kept guard," David teased, leaning back in his chair. "So, what's the plan? You guys staying in the Watson fortress for the full two weeks? Or are you coming back to the dorms to help us mere mortals pass the finals?"

"We're staying," Keifer said firmly. "Jay needs the 'Mamma Serina' treatment for a while longer. But we'll send you our notes on the Macro-Engineering module by tonight."

"Bless you, King!" C In and Mayo shouted in unison.

"Wait, wait," Mica leaned into her camera. "Jay, we saw the news retraction. The university is buzzing. Everyone knows your parents tried to pull a fast one and the Watsons shut it down. Percy and Aries haven't shown their faces in the cafeteria all day. They're 'studying from home'—which we all know means they're hiding in shame."

I felt a surge of triumph, but it was quiet. The "Face-Slapping" of my brothers didn't feel as important as the warmth of the house around me.

"Let them hide," I said. "I have everything I need right here."

The Afternoon Tea

The day ended with Mamma and Pappa joining us in the library for afternoon tea. Mamma brought in a tray of bibingka and started asking me questions about my dream wedding dress, while Pappa and Keifer got into a heated debate about the future of green energy in Southeast Asia.

I sat there, watching them, the steam from my tea curling into the air.

On the fourth day, I realized that I wasn't just studying for an exam. I was studying for a life. Every page I turned, every equation I solved, was a brick in the wall of the home I was building with Keifer.

I wasn't a burden. I wasn't a variable. I was a Watson.

"You're drifting again, Jay," Keifer whispered, leaning over to steal a piece of my cake.

"Just calculating the probability of this being real," I replied.

"And?"

"The probability is 1.0," I said, leaning my head on his shoulder. "Absolute certainty."
