Chapter 189 - Chapter 188

Author's POV]

The warehouse was a symphony of violence and shadows. The tactical team had moved like ghosts, clearing the room of Yuri's men, leaving only the center of the floor—the blood-stained circle under the light—as the final stage.

Keifer didn't use a gun. He wanted to feel the man who had hurt Jay break beneath his hands. He lunged at Yuri, his movements fueled by a primal, calculation-free rage. He caught Yuri with a devastating blow to the ribs, the sound of fracturing bone echoing in the hollow space.

But Yuri was a rat backed into a corner. As Keifer leaned in to finish the "Deletion," Yuri's hand scrambled across the floor, his fingers closing around a heavy, rusted iron rod.

The Impact: System Failure

[Jay's POV]

"KEIFER, WATCH OUT!" I screamed, my voice cracking through the haze of my own pain.

It was too late. Yuri swung the rod with a desperate, frantic strength. The metal connected with the side of Keifer's head with a sickening crack.

I watched in slow motion as the "Shield" crumbled. Keifer's eyes rolled back, his body going limp as he collapsed onto the concrete floor next to my chair. The man who was 1,000% invincible was suddenly motionless, a dark pool of crimson beginning to spread against the grey stone.

"No... Keif... no!" I sobbed, struggling against my zip-ties.

Yuri stood over him, gasping for air, clutching his broken ribs. He raised the iron rod again, his face twisted in a murderous grin. "I told you, Watson... nobody is a god."

The Third Variable: Bridget's Redemption

[Author's POV]

Yuri raised the rod high, aiming for Keifer's skull to deliver the final blow.

BANG.

A single shot rang out, its thunderous crack far louder than the silenced tactical rifles from before. Yuri's body jerked. A small, neat hole appeared in the center of his chest. He looked down at it, his eyes wide with confusion, before he fell backward, dead before he hit the ground.

At the edge of the light stood Bridget.

She was shaking so hard her teeth were chattering, her hands gripped around a small, sleek silver handgun—her licensed concealed carry. She had followed the SUVs, driven by a desperate need to fix the "Glitch" she had caused.

"Nobody..." Bridget whispered, her voice trembling but certain. "...touches my family."

She dropped the gun and ran forward, falling to her knees beside Keifer.

[Jay's POV: The Desperate Sync]

"Bridget! The ties! Cut the ties!" I wailed.

She fumbled with a pocketknife, slicing through my restraints. The moment I was free, I ignored the burns from the electricity and crawled to Keifer's side. I pulled his heavy head into my lap, my hands shaking as I pressed them against the wound on his temple.

"Keifer! Keifer, look at me! Reboot, damn it!" I screamed, my tears mixing with the blood on his face. "100% compliance, Keifer! You are not allowed to go offline!"

Bridget was beside me, her hands covered in Yuri's blood and Keifer's. She looked at me, and for the first time, there was no envy—only a shared, terrifying loss.

"I called the medical chopper," Bridget gasped, pressing her scarf against Keifer's head. "They're two minutes out. Jay, stay with him. Keep his heart beating."

[Keifer's POV: The Void]

The world was black. There were no numbers, no market data, no security perimeters. There was only a distant, muffled sound... a voice I knew better than my own pulse.

"...not allowed to go offline..."

The signal was faint, but it was there. The Constant was calling me back. I tried to reach for it, but the "System" was too heavy. I felt a soft hand on my cheek and the salt of tears on my lips.

I forced one eye open, the world a blurry mess of red and white.

"Wiefy..." I wheezed, my voice barely a thread.

"I'm here, Keif. I'm here."

I looked past her and saw a shadow in the corner—Bridget. She looked broken, but her eyes were steady. She had held the line.

"Status..." I coughed, blood bubbling at the corner of my mouth.

"Status: We're going home, Keifer," Jay sobbed, kissing my forehead. "1,000% together."
