Day 5: The War Between the Heart and the Head
[Keifer's POV]
The library floor felt more like home than the massive, silk-lined bed in the Blue Suite. Even after we stood up, I couldn't bring myself to let go of her hand. My brain was a mess of "File Not Found" errors, but my chest felt like it was housing a nuclear reactor. Every time Jay breathed, my own lungs seemed to follow her lead.
I sat in the large wingback chair, and she knelt beside me, checking my pulse and my temperature. Her touch was like a high-voltage jumpstart.
Logically, I knew what the doctors said. Logically, I looked at the photos of Kiara and me and tried to force my brain to accept the data. But the "Data" felt like a cheap imitation. When Jay touched my wrist, my heart rate didn't just increase—it sang. It recognized her.
"Your pulse is high, Keifer," she whispered, her eyes searching mine. "Are you in pain? Is your head hurting?"
"My head is quiet for once," I rasped, reaching out to catch a stray lock of her hair. "It's my heart that's the problem. It's trying to beat out of my chest every time you look at me. Tell me the truth, Jay... why does my body think you belong to me?"
[Jay's POV]
I looked into his eyes—those stormy, beautiful blue eyes that were currently filled with a terrifying vulnerability. My heart was screaming to tell him. I am your wife. We have a son in heaven. You called me your Weify. You promised me 1,000% devotion.
But I saw the slight tremor in his hand. I saw the way his pupils were still slightly uneven. The doctor's warning echoed in my mind: If you shatter the reality too soon, the stress could cause a permanent short-circuit.
"Because I've been your Constant for a long time, Keif," I said, my voice trembling as I leaned forward to fix the bandage near his temple. "Even if the 'Files' are locked, the 'Hardware' knows who the primary user is. You're just... in a temporary lockdown."
I began to massage his shoulders, feeling the knots of tension. I moved my hands with a familiarity I had practiced for years. I knew exactly where he carried his stress. I knew the exact pressure to apply to the base of his neck to make his breathing deepen.
"You're doing it again," he breathed, his eyes closing as he leaned into my touch.
"Doing what?"
"Caring for me like you're memorized my soul," he whispered.
[Keifer's POV]
I let my head fall back as her fingers worked magic on my skin. It was a 1,000% sensory override. My brain was screaming, 'This is a stranger!' but my heart was roaring, 'This is your Queen!'
The conflict was exhausting. I felt a tear prick the corner of my eye—not from pain, but from the sheer frustration of being locked out of my own life.
"I feel like I'm standing behind a glass wall," I choked out, grabbing her hands and pulling them to my lips. I kissed her palms, the scent of her skin making my head spin. "I see you. I feel this... this insane attraction... this need to protect you. But I can't find the 'Why.' Why can't I see the memories, Jay?"
I pulled her closer, tucking her head under my chin as we sat there in the dim light of the library. I was a King without a kingdom, a CEO without a strategy, but in her arms, I felt like a man who was slowly being rebuilt, one heartbeat at a time.
"Don't leave tonight," I whispered into the silence. "When the 'Wife' comes to call me to bed... stay in the shadows. Don't go offline. I need your signal to sleep."
[Jay's POV]
I stayed. I sat on the floor by his feet, resting my head against his knee as he drifted into a light sleep in the chair. I watched the rise and fall of his chest, my hand resting on his shin.
He was rejecting the lie. His brain was still broken, but his heart was a Powerhouse that wouldn't be denied.
"Two more days, Hubby," I whispered to the quiet room. "Two more days of the dark, and then I'm bringing you home for real."
Across the house, I knew Kiara was pacing, losing her grip on the "System." But here, in the library, the perimeter was finally secure.
