Chapter 25 - "The Rising Lift"

Chapter Twenty-five

Vane

On the monitor, I watch Arthur stand in the garage like a fucking statue, his face turning a humiliated, bruised shade of purple as Sloane's car disappears up the ramp.

I lean back in my chair, the silence of the office pressing in on me like a physical weight.

She did it. She had the keys to the kingdom. She had the money to fix her mother and the ticket to leave my shadow forever, and she threw it in that old man's face. She chose the cage. She chose the twenty-seven days.

She chose me.

A strange, terrifying sensation washes over me, and it pisses me off. It isn't triumph. It isn't the cold, clinical satisfaction of a deal closed. It's a hollow, aching warmth in my chest that feels like a goddamn weakness. For the first time in my life, I don't feel like the smartest predator in the room. I feel like a man who has just been given a gift he doesn't deserve and doesn't know how to keep.

She looked at the camera. She knew I was watching. That look wasn't for Arthur; it was a challenge. A beautiful, defiant fuck you to the world and a signal to me. She's all in.

Tomorrow

I know how she'll play it. She'll walk in here at 8:00 AM sharp, pretending that nothing happened. She'll put on the mask, the sharp suit, and that neutral, professional voice that used to drive me crazy and now just makes me want to tear the walls down. She'll try to be the "Asset" again.

I stand up and walk to the office door. I turn the deadbolt. Click.

I'm going to wait for her right here. And when she walks through that door, I am going to show her that some assets are too precious to ever be liquidated. I'm going to show her that once you choose the monster, the monster doesn't let you go.

The contract says twenty-two days. But as I watch the lift indicator on my desk start its climb toward the sixty-first floor, I realize the paper is meaningless. I'm never letting her go.

Twenty-two days? No. She's mine for as long as I'm breathing.
