Later that day, inside the gym, Faye was shadowboxing while the Sensei stood silently in a corner, watching the angry girl box against herself. Her bare feet zipped across the rubber mats, her knuckles cutting through the air with a fast, heavy rhythm. Every punch came with a sharp, ragged breath through her teeth, her chest heaving as she let out all the extra anger that had been bubbling in her stomach since she left the school.
Then Princess walked in.
She had just come from school, while the pups remained in the car.
Faye noticed her girlfriend but ignored her and continued boxing. She didn't slow down her feet, her eyes staying fixed on the space right in front of her face as she threw a fast left hook into the empty air.
"Can you stop and let's talk?" Princess said calmly. She stood a few feet away from the edge of the mats, her arms hanging loose at her sides, her voice steady but laced with a heavy tiredness.
