Chapter 45 - Sin vs Virtue

Lady Aurelia was already halfway down the corridor when she heard the frantic footsteps behind her.

She carried herself like the world had already stepped aside for her. Silver hair fell in soft waves, catching the light as she moved. She stood around 5'9, flawless skin, quiet confidence in every step.

Her white dress was modest, elegant—covering everything without trying too hard, leaving only the shape beneath to hint at her figure. It didn't need to reveal anything.

Marlana came flying around the corner, long blue hair whipping everywhere, those big curves making the run look almost graceful even though she was clearly panicking. V-shaped glasses slightly crooked, green eyes wide, pen in one hand, papers in the other, board tucked under her arm like it was trying to escape.

She skidded on the blood-red carpet.

Hard.

Papers exploded. Board clattered. Marlana let out a tiny "shit—!" and went down fast, knees first.

Aurelia didn't even break stride at first, then she spun elegantly, one smooth step, hand shooting out and catching the girl before her knee could kiss the stone. She pulled Marlana up like she weighed nothing, steadying her with both hands on her shoulders.

"Easy, easy," Aurelia said, voice warm and low, the kind you use when the other person is embarrassed as hell. "You alright, Marlana? That carpet's been tripping people since before I was born." Aurelia giggled a little, making a little joke.

Marlana's cheeks flushed bright pink. She shoved her glasses back up her nose, tugged the papers straight, and tried to look professional even though she was still breathing like she'd sprinted a mile. "Y-yeah, I'm fine, my lady—sorry about that. I just— The Seven Heroes of Virtue are at the table. They're waiting. Patiently. I didn't wanna keep you."

Aurelia's silver hair shifted as she tilted her head, green eyes crinkling with a small, real smile. "Oh good. Thank you, Marlana. I'll be there soon. Go on, catch your breath—grab some water or something before you try sprinting again, yeah? You're gonna give yourself a heart attack one of these days."

Marlana nodded quick, still flustered, and mumbled "Thank you, my lady, really" over her shoulder as she hurried off, blue hair bouncing behind her.

The narrator leans in, just for you:

Lady Aurelia isn't some fancy noble. She's the Avatar of the Paragon—an extra-dimensional entity made flesh, all seven virtues woven into a single being.

She kept walking.

The halls were huge. The ceilings stretched way too high, and the walls were covered in paintings—forests, mountains, rivers, all overly detailed.

She didn't even look at them, just walked straight through, boots soft against the red carpet.

Inside the chamber, the seven thrones waited under their glowing symbols.

And the heroes were just… talking. Like normal people killing time before a meeting.

The Hero of Chastity, Serah, leaned forward a little, clothes plain and proper, voice quiet but clear. "It's not that I don't get it," she said. "I do. I just don't let it run me. That's the whole point." She gave a small shrug. "You can want things without letting them own you."

The Hero of Temperance, Garron, let out a deep laugh from his huge frame and leaned back in his chair. "Exactly. Hunger, thirst, all that stuff—it never shuts up. You just get used to telling it no." He crossed his arms. "That's what balance is. Not pretending you don't want more. Just knowing when to stop."

The Hero of Diligence, Kael, tapped the end of his spear against the floor once. "I've been doing the same routine every morning for thirty years," he said. "Not because I'm obsessed. Because if I stop, I get sloppy." He glanced toward the doors. "If she needs us, I'm ready. Simple as that."

The Hero of Kindness, Lucan, smiled a little, easy and genuine. "Most people are carrying more than they let on," he said. "You give them one decent moment, one bit of help, and sometimes that's enough to keep them standing." He folded his hands. "That matters. At least to me it does."

The Hero of Patience, Selene, sat still, whip resting by her side, her posture straight without looking stiff. "You lot always want things to happen now," she said, almost amused. "Most of the time, rushing just makes a mess." She tilted her head slightly. "Things come when they come. Until then, I wait."

The Hero of Charity, Elias, lifted a hand like it was the simplest thing in the world. "If someone needs something and I can give it, then I give it," he said. "Time, strength, effort, whatever." He lowered his arm again. "No point standing there thinking about it forever."

And the Hero of Humility—Rowan—plain hair, plain eyes, so normal-looking he almost disappeared beside the others—gave a small shrug. "I'm not here to be impressive," he said. "I'm here to do my part." He rested a hand on his rapier. "If nobody remembers my name after, that's fine with me."

They all shared a quiet laugh, the kind that comes when you've known each other long enough to rib each other without it stinging.

Then the double doors opened without a sound.

Lady Aurelia stepped in.

All seven turned at once.

She looked at them—really looked—and the corner of her mouth lifted.

"Shall we begin?"

Every one of them nodded, uniform and immediate and quiet. They didn't need to be told twice. These were the seven heroes she had chosen herself, the seven she had blessed, the seven who carried her aspects and the falna she had given them.

For a moment nobody spoke. Then Aurelia's voice came, calm but heavy enough to shift the whole room.

"The next Holy War will begin soon."

She looked up slightly, not at the ceiling but somewhere far beyond it, like she was listening to something only she could hear.

"I can feel it."

That got their full attention. Her expression stayed the same as she went on. "My counterpart has begun preparing. The Antithesis is gathering his forces. He intends to start the Third Holy War."

No one interrupted.

The weight of it hit them all at once—shoulders stiffened, breaths caught, one hand tightened around a spear shaft while another gripped the arm of a throne.

Their predecessors had died in the last one, every single one of them. They had taken down the opposing sins, stopped the end of the world by the skin of their teeth, and paid for it with their lives.

The room went dead quiet.

In that silence the memories rose anyway: old voices, old lessons, the faces of the masters, mentors, and legends who had come before them. All gone.

Every hero in the chamber understood the same thing at the same time—this wasn't some shocking twist. This was the cycle.

Aurelia let out a slow breath. "We were always equal," she said, "from the beginning." Her eyes lowered again, looking through the years instead of just at them.

"In the Silver Gate, where we were born, there was no war yet. Just two beings brought into existence together. We were twins of opposite nature, but twins all the same. And once… I loved my brother very much. And he loved me."

"We were close,"

"closer than anything else in creation. Then we argued. For the first time, truly argued. Not a passing disagreement. A fracture. And once that fracture formed, it never closed."

The chamber stayed still enough to hear fabric shift. "We split apart. We fought again and again for eons. Even when we made that truce, even when our true selves stepped back and allowed this world to continue, he never changed."

Her expression hardened just a little. "He still wants the same thing he wanted then. He wants to corrupt the lands of the living world. He wants to drag everything good into ruin."

Aurelia straightened slightly. "And I will stand against him for all of time."

No one doubted her. Not for a second. Her gaze moved across the seven of them, one by one. "Be ready. Gather your weapons. Prepare your bodies. Steady your minds. This war will come whether we welcome it or not." Her voice stayed calm, and that somehow made it worse.

"We will not let him take this world."

Lmk if this world-building chapter helped y'all understand that this isn't just DanMachi, and that the world Noel ended up in is its own thing, even if it still shares some aspects with the original.

Anyways, have a good day.
