KHALID'S POV
She's asleep next to me and I'm lying here thinking about the moment she told me she cheated.
Three weeks ago. Casual. Like she was telling me what she had for lunch.
"I slept with someone else last week."
My entire world stopped.
For about five seconds I believed her. For five seconds I felt something crack in my chest.
Then I remembered the security footage. Remembered I'd checked it every day she was alone. Remembered she'd been home the entire time.
She was lying.
Testing me again.
And even though I knew it was a test, even though I caught her immediately, those five seconds destroyed me.
That's what she does to me.
---
I'm exhausted.
Actually, genuinely exhausted.
Six weeks of tests. Of lies. Of her trying to leave. Of finding her at 2 AM in random places. Of reassuring her I'm staying while she systematically tries to prove I'm not.
I should be angry.
I'm not angry.
I'm just—certain.
Certain that I'm staying. Certain that she's mine. Certain that no amount of testing will change my mind.
That certainty is the only thing keeping me functional.
---
The day she packed a bag I thought I was going to lose my mind.
I was on a call with investors when I saw it. Her bag. In the entryway.
Hung up mid-sentence. Actually just hung up.
Found her standing at the door staring at it like it was a wall she couldn't climb over.
"What are you doing?"
"Leaving."
That one word. That's all it took for my entire body to go into panic mode.
I took the bag from her. Put it down. Held her while she cried.
And I knew—absolutely knew—that I would do whatever it took to make her stay.
Whatever it took.
---
My brother called last week.
"You look like shit."
"Thanks."
"The actress?"
"Her name is Roman."
"Is Roman destroying you?"
I thought about it. "Yes."
"And you're okay with that?"
"No. But I'm staying anyway."
He was quiet for a long moment. "You're in love with her."
"Obsessively."
"That's not healthy."
"I know."
"And you don't care."
"I don't care."
He sighed. "Just—don't do anything illegal for her."
Too late.
I didn't say that out loud.
But I thought it.
---
Here's what I know about myself now:
I would do anything for her.
Not metaphorically. Actually anything.
She tested me by lying about cheating. But if she HAD actually cheated? If she'd actually slept with someone else?
I'd be devastated. Would probably break something. Might break several somethings.
But I wouldn't leave.
I'd stay. I'd forgive her. I'd make her promise never to do it again.
And then I'd probably find the guy and—
I'm not going to finish that thought.
But the point is: there is no line. There is no boundary she can cross that would make me leave.
And that should terrify me.
It doesn't.
---
The day she disappeared I checked her location every five minutes.
Her phone was off. I couldn't track her.
Spent eight hours going slowly insane. Called everyone she knows. Drove to every place I thought she might be.
Found her at 2 AM sitting in her car outside her old apartment.
The relief when I saw her was physical. Like I could finally breathe again.
She said she thought about leaving. About starting over somewhere without me.
And I thought: if she had left, I would have found her. Wherever she went. However long it took.
I would have found her.
---
I'm not the man I was before her.
That man had control. Had boundaries. Had a life that existed independently of another person.
This version of me has none of that.
This version of me checks security footage to make sure she's safe. Drops business calls mid-sentence when I think she's leaving. Drives around at 2 AM looking for her.
This version of me would commit crimes for her.
Has committed crimes for her.
Gary disappeared because I made a phone call. Because I decided that someone threatening her needed to not exist anymore.
And I'd do it again.
Without hesitation.
---
She said something three days ago that's been sitting in my chest.
"I love you in a way that makes me understand why you stay."
We were in bed. She'd just come home from a party she tried to go to alone. Made it forty minutes before coming back.
"If you tried to leave," she said, "I'd do the same thing. I'd chase you. I'd prove I meant it. I'd stay no matter what."
And I realized: she gets it now.
She understands that this isn't one-sided anymore. That she's as trapped in this as I am.
That we're both choosing this. Every day. Despite the dysfunction. Despite the tests. Despite everything.
---
My business partner asked if I was okay yesterday.
"You've been distracted for months."
"I know."
"Is it worth it?"
I thought about Roman. About the tests. About finding her with her bag packed. About her lying about cheating. About all of it.
"Yes."
"You don't sound sure."
"I'm sure. It's just—complicated."
"Complicated how?"
"She's—" How do I explain this? "She's brilliant and broken and testing me constantly to see if I'm real. And I'm staying. Every time. No matter what she does."
"That sounds exhausting."
"It is."
"Then why?"
"Because I love her. Because she's mine. Because walking away isn't an option anymore."
---
I caught myself the other day imagining scenarios.
What if someone hurt her? What would I do?
I know what I'd do. I'd make them disappear. Legally or not. I have the resources. I have the connections.
I'd make sure they never touched her again.
What if she actually did cheat? What would I do?
I'd forgive her. Eventually. After probably destroying something. But I'd forgive her.
What if she tried to leave again? Actually left this time?
I'd find her. No matter where she went. No matter how long it took.
These aren't fantasies. These are certainties.
This is who I am now.
---
She asked me last night how I knew I wouldn't leave.
"How do you know? How can you be sure?"
"Because I've decided. And I don't change my mind."
"That's not an answer."
"It's the only answer I have."
But it's not. The real answer is darker.
The real answer is: I can't leave because leaving means losing the only person who's ever seen me completely. The only person who knows about Gary and the security footage and the obsessive checking and all of it.
The only person who knows how far I'd go for her.
And if I lose that—lose her—I lose the only person who understands what I actually am.
---
I'm not a good man.
I used to be. Or I used to think I was.
But good men don't make people disappear. Good men don't check security footage compulsively. Good men don't imagine violent scenarios involving anyone who might hurt their girlfriend.
I'm not good.
I'm obsessed.
And she's my moral compass now. She's the only thing standing between me and doing something truly unforgivable.
If she asked me to hurt someone, I would.
If she asked me to do something illegal, I would.
If she asked me to burn down my entire life, I would.
She's the only reason I haven't already.
---
The testing has slowed down this week.
She hasn't lied in three days. Hasn't tried to leave. Hasn't disappeared.
We're in some new phase. Some quiet space where she's accepted that I'm staying.
It won't last. She'll test me again. Tomorrow or next week or next month.
But for now, there's peace.
And I'm taking it.
---
My father called yesterday.
Wants to know when I'm coming home. When I'm fulfilling my obligations. When I'm going to stop "playing house with an actress."
I told him I'd think about it.
I won't think about it.
I'm not going anywhere.
Roman is here. My life is here.
Everything else is background noise.
---
Here's what I'm certain of:
She's mine. Completely. Not because I own her but because we've chosen each other in the most fucked up way possible.
I would do anything for her. Actually anything. Legal or not.
She's my moral compass. The only thing keeping me from being something dangerous.
And I'm staying. No matter what. No matter how many times she tests me. No matter what she does.
That's the certainty.
That's what's keeping me functional through six weeks of chaos.
I know who I am now.
I'm hers.
Completely.
And nothing is going to change that.
---
It's 3 AM.
She's asleep. I'm lying here watching her breathe.
Six weeks ago she told me she cheated (she didn't).
Four weeks ago she packed a bag (she didn't leave).
Two weeks ago she disappeared (I found her).
And through all of it, I stayed.
Because that's what you do when you're this far gone.
You stay.
You pass the tests.
You prove you mean it.
Over and over and over.
Until they finally believe you.
And she believes me now.
I can see it in the way she looks at me. In the way she stopped trying to leave. In the way she said "I love you in a way that makes me understand why you stay."
She believes me.
And now we're both trapped in this.
Together.
Equally fucked up.
Equally committed.
Equally certain.
