AMIRA'S ULTIMATUM: INSIDE THE PRINCESS'S DEMANDS

Sources say Khalid's wife is "done being ignored." She wants him to choose. Him or Roman. The arrangement can't continue like this.

Lainey Gossip

The arrangement is cracking. Amira showed up in LA and realized her husband is barely hers. Roman is spiraling watching him pretend to be married. Khalid thinks he can have both forever. He can't. Something has to break.

NARRATIVE

Amira arrives unannounced.

Khalid is at Roman's place when he gets the text from his driver.

Princess arrived at your residence. Waiting for you.

He stares at his phone.

"What's wrong?" Roman asks.

"Amira's here. In LA."

"Did you know she was coming?"

"No."

"You need to go."

"I know."

He doesn't move.

"Khalid. Go."

He leaves. Drives to his penthouse—the one he barely uses anymore. The one Amira has never seen.

She's in the living room. Still in travel clothes. Looking exhausted and angry.

"Surprise," she says. Not smiling.

"You should have told me you were coming."

"Should I? Should I tell my husband when I'm visiting?" She stands. "You've been gone for two months. Two months, Khalid. I'm your wife and I haven't seen you since our wedding."

"I've been working."

"Liar." She crosses the room. "I know about her. The actress. Roman Helton."

He goes very still.

"Everyone knows," Amira continues. "The tabloids. Your family. My family. Everyone except apparently me—the wife."

"It's complicated."

"Is it? Because it seems simple. You're in love with someone else. You married me anyway. And now you're trying to have both."

"Yes."

The honesty stops her. "Yes?"

"Yes. That's exactly what I'm doing."

"And you think that's acceptable?"

"No. But it's what's happening."

She stares at him. "Do you love her?"

"Yes."

"More than you could ever love me."

"Yes."

"Then why did you marry me?"

"Because my family demanded it. Because it was my duty. Because—" He stops. "Because I needed the position and resources that come with being married to you."

"To protect her."

"Yes."

Amira sits down slowly. "You're honest at least."

"Would you prefer I lie?"

"I don't know. Maybe." She's quiet for a moment. "Does she love you?"

"Yes."

"And she's okay with this? With you being married to someone else?"

"She hates it. But she's doing it anyway."

"Why?"

"Because we're obsessed with each other. Because neither of us can walk away."

Amira is quiet for a long moment. Then: "I want to meet her."

"What?"

"Your girlfriend. Your—whatever she is. I want to meet her."

"That's not—"

"It's not a request." She looks at him. "If I'm going to be part of this arrangement, I need to understand what I'm competing with."

"You're not competing."

"Then what am I doing? Being your wife in name while she has you in reality? I need to understand why. I need to see her."

Khalid calls Roman from the car.

"Amira wants to meet you."

Silence. Then: "Are you fucking serious?"

"Yes."

"No. Absolutely not."

"Roman—"

"I said no. I'm not meeting your wife. I'm not doing some weird sister-wives negotiation. I'm not—"

"She's not leaving until she meets you."

"Then she can stay forever. I don't care."

"Please."

"Don't. Don't ask me to do this."

"I'm asking anyway."

She's quiet for a long time. "When?"

"Tomorrow. Lunch. Neutral location."

"This is insane."

"I know."

"I hate you right now."

"I know that too."

They meet at a restaurant. Private room. Just the three of them.

Amira arrives first. Roman second. Khalid last—deliberately, giving them a moment alone.

Roman sits across from Amira. They stare at each other.

"You're younger than I expected," Roman says finally.

"You're exactly what I expected," Amira responds. "Beautiful. Confident. American."

"Is that an insult?"

"I don't know yet."

Khalid walks in. The tension is suffocating.

"Should I leave you two alone?" he asks.

"No," both women say simultaneously.

He sits. Nobody orders food.

"I want to understand," Amira says, looking at Roman. "Why you're okay with this. With him being married to me."

"I'm not okay with it."

"Then why are you doing it?"

"Because I love him. Because I can't walk away. Because—" Roman stops. "Because I'm an idiot."

"That makes two of us."

They're quiet for a moment.

"Do you love him?" Roman asks.

"No. I barely know him."

"But you married him."

"Duty. Family. The same reasons he married me." Amira pauses. "But I thought at least I'd have a husband. Someone who comes home. Someone who—exists in my life. Instead I have a stranger who disappears for months at a time."

"I'm sorry."

"Are you?"

"Yes. Actually." Roman leans forward. "This isn't what I wanted. I didn't want him to marry you. I tried to prevent it. But he did it anyway and now we're all stuck in this nightmare."

"So what do we do?"

"I don't know. I've been asking that question for months."

Khalid speaks up. "We make it work. The three of us. We figure out how to—coexist."

"Coexist," Amira repeats. "You want me to coexist with your girlfriend while married to you."

"Yes."

"And what do I get out of this arrangement?"

"Security. Money. Position. Everything that comes with being my wife."

"Except you."

"Except me."

She's quiet for a long moment. "I want honesty. If you're with her, tell me. If you're coming to Dubai, tell me. If you're never coming to Dubai, tell me that too. But I'm done being lied to."

"Okay."

"And I want respect. I'm your wife. Legally. Publicly. That means something."

"I know."

"Do you?" She looks at him. "Because for the last two months you've treated me like I don't exist."

"You're right. I'm sorry."

"Sorry isn't enough. I need—" She stops. Looks at Roman. "I need to not feel like I'm in competition with her. Because I can't compete with this. With whatever you two have."

Roman speaks up. "You're not in competition with me."

"Aren't I?"

"No. You're his wife. I'm his—" She stops. "I don't even know what I am anymore. His girlfriend? His mistress? His secret?"

"His obsession," Amira says quietly. "That's what you are."

Roman doesn't deny it.

They don't reach an agreement.

Just—acknowledgment. That the three of them are stuck in this. That it's fucked up. That nobody's happy.

But nobody's leaving either.

Amira goes back to Dubai two days later.

Before she leaves, she tells Khalid: "I'll stay married to you. I'll maintain the appearance. But I'm not pretending to be happy. And I'm not pretending you're mine."

"Fair enough."

"And if I find someone else—"

"I won't stop you."

She nods. Leaves.

Khalid goes to Roman's that night.

"How did it go?" she asks.

"As well as could be expected."

"Is she okay?"

"No. But she's staying."

"Because she has no choice."

"She has a choice. She's choosing to stay anyway."

Roman is quiet. "I hate this."

"I know."

"I hate that I met your wife. I hate that I'm the reason she's miserable. I hate that we're all lying to each other while pretending it's working."

"Is it working?"

"No. But we're doing it anyway."

Week two after Amira leaves, the cracks show.

Roman is distant. Won't answer calls. When Khalid shows up at her place, she's been drinking.

"You need to leave."

"What's wrong?"

"Everything. This. Us. The fact that I'm waiting for scraps of time from a married man."

"You're not—"

"I am. That's exactly what I'm doing. Waiting for you to finish playing husband so you can come to me."

"That's not fair."

"Isn't it? You have a wife. An actual legal wife. And I'm the woman you fuck when she's not around."

"That's not what you are."

"Then what am I?"

He doesn't answer.

"Exactly." She pours another drink. "You can't even define what I am to you. Because there's no word for it. Mistress is too simple. Girlfriend is too legitimate. I'm just—the woman you can't quit."

"You're the woman I love."

"And her? What's Amira?"

"The woman I'm married to."

"So I'm the love. She's the wife. And we're all supposed to be okay with that."

"Yes."

She laughs. No humor. "Get out."

"Roman—"

"I said get out. Go home to your wife. Or your penthouse. Or wherever you go when you're not here."

He leaves.

She doesn't call him back.

They don't talk for three days.

Longest they've gone without contact since the wedding.

On day four, he shows up at 2 AM.

She opens the door. Lets him in.

They don't talk. Just—hold each other.

"I'm sorry," she says finally.

"Don't be. You were right."

"About what?"

"About all of it. About the fact that this arrangement is destroying you. About the fact that I'm asking too much."

"But you're not going to stop."

"No."

"And I'm not going to leave."

"No."

They're both quiet.

"So what do we do?" she asks.

"Survive it. However we can."

"That's not sustainable."

"I know." He pulls her closer. "But it's all we have."
