Lia stared at Ren, her breath catching in her throat. The sight of her brother, his eyes now swirling galaxies of black and white, was more terrifying than the thought of execution. He had just punched through armor that could deflect siege weapons and sent a formidable Sun-Knight plummeting into the depths of the Spire. This wasn't the scrawny, quiet Ren she remembered from the Outer Districts. This was something else—something primal and cold.
"Ren," she whispered again, her voice shaking. "What happened to you?"
He didn't answer, at least not with words. He reached out, his hand closing around her wrist. The touch wasn't gentle. It was firm, almost possessive. His skin felt unnaturally cool, like stone that had never known the sun. Lia flinched, but he didn't release her. Instead, the mana-shackles binding her wrists flared a brilliant blue, then dimmed, their intricate enchantments unraveling into dust. The iron bands fell away, clattering to the stone floor.
[System Notification: Mana-Shackles (Tier 3) nullified. Void Points +5.]
"We have to go," Ren repeated, his voice still flat, devoid of the familiar warmth she remembered. He didn't wait for her consent. He pulled her, his enhanced strength effortlessly overriding her shock.
They began to descend the spiral staircase, moving past the shattered wall where Captain Magnus had fallen. The absence of light was absolute at the bottom of the Spire's central shaft, a perfect mirror to the Void within Ren. He didn't even glance down. His focus was entirely on escape.
As they moved, the sounds of the Spire became clearer. Distant shouts, the rhythmic clang of armored boots running on stone, and the piercing, metallic shriek of alarm bells from the watchtowers. The entire fortress was now fully alert.
"They'll be swarming the lower levels," Lia managed to say, struggling to keep pace. "The underground escape routes are always the most heavily guarded. There are traps, golems—"
"I ate a door," Ren interrupted, his gaze fixed forward. "And I absorbed a Sun-Strike. Traps won't hold."
His confidence, or perhaps his sheer disregard for danger, was unnerving. Lia had always been the practical one, the one who meticulously studied the Academy's siege tactics. But Ren was operating on an entirely different set of rules.
They reached the main floor. The great iron door, which Ren had so casually "eaten" open, was now surrounded by a growing contingent of Royal Guards. Their spears were leveled, and the air around them shimmered with defensive mana.
"Ren Thorne! Surrender now!" a voice boomed from the front of the formation. It was a beefy lieutenant, his face grim. "Further resistance will result in the immediate execution of your sister!"
Lia gasped, freezing in place. "They knew! They set this up!"
Ren didn't stop. He pulled Lia behind him, his body a shield against the incoming threat. "They're welcome to try."
He activated Shadow Mantle, but this time, he extended the field to encompass Lia. The sensation was disorienting for her—a sudden chill, a blurring of her own form as the light seemed to bend around them both.
[System Notification: Shadow Mantle (Extended Radius) active. Mana Drain: 15 MP/second.]
[Current MP: 90/250]
"Fire!" the lieutenant roared.
A volley of mana bolts, each shimmering with a destructive blue glow, shot toward their position. But they passed through Ren and Lia, impacting the stone wall behind them with loud cracks. The guards faltered, their faces contorted in confusion.
"What is this sorcery?" one of them yelled.
"It's not sorcery," Ren muttered. "It's just not there."
He didn't engage them directly. He knew he couldn't take on an entire company head-on, not with Lia. He had to keep moving. He used Void Step—a short, disorienting blink through subspace—to bypass the front line of guards, pulling Lia through the bewildering grey dimension with him.
They reappeared a dozen feet away, closer to the outer wall of the courtyard. Lia stumbled, gripping Ren's arm to steady herself. "That... that felt like being turned inside out!"
"You'll get used to it," Ren said, his gaze sweeping the battlements. He could see the silhouettes of archers taking aim, their arrows tipped with glowing mana.
"We need to get to the outer wall!" Lia shouted, pointing toward a crumbling section of the Spire that faced the city's darker industrial district. "There's an old service exit for waste disposal that connects to the sewer lines!"
"Lead the way," Ren commanded, pushing her forward.
They ran, a pair of shimmering phantoms, through the chaotic courtyard. Mana bolts zipped through the air, hitting nothing. Swords swung at empty space. Ren felt the drain on his mana, a persistent ache in his core, but the passive consumption from the Suppression Stone was helping to mitigate it.
As they neared the outer wall, a new sound cut through the night: the majestic, terrifying shriek of a Griffon.
[Warning: Elite Aerial Unit approaching!]
[Enemy: Griffon Rider - Commander Orion (Level 55)]
[Threat Level: High]
Ren looked up. A massive Griffon, its golden feathers gleaming even in the dim moonlight, descended from the sky. On its back sat a rider clad in gilded armor, wielding a lance that crackled with lightning. Commander Orion, one of the Emperor's most feared aerial warriors.
"There they are!" Orion's voice boomed, amplified by an enchanted helm. "The Void-Born and the Traitor's Spawn! Prepare to face the Emperor's judgment!"
The Griffon dove, its talons extended, each capable of ripping through steel. Ren knew he couldn't dodge this in the open. He pushed Lia with all his might toward the crumbling section of the wall.
"Go! Get inside! I'll handle him!"
"Ren, no!" Lia screamed, but he had already pushed her into the shadows of the old service exit.
Ren turned to face the Griffon. The majestic beast, wings spread wide, filled his entire field of vision. Commander Orion, with a cruel smile on his face, aimed his lightning lance.
"You face the might of the Imperium, boy!" Orion roared, bringing the lance down. "Stormbreaker: Sky-Rend!"
A bolt of pure lightning, thick as a tree trunk, erupted from the lance, streaking toward Ren. It was too fast to fully absorb with Event Horizon. His mana was too low for another Gravitic Collapse of that magnitude.
Ren made a desperate decision. He aimed the Void Orb at the ground beneath his feet.
"Void Rupture!" Ren screamed, slamming his hand down.
The ground didn't just crack this time. It imploded. A perfect circle of earth, five feet in diameter, was instantly swallowed by the Void. Ren dropped into the resulting pit, narrowly avoiding the lightning strike, which vaporized the stone where he had stood moments before.
He was now in the old, forgotten sewer lines Lia had mentioned. The air was putrid, thick with the stench of human waste and decaying magic. But he was safe from the immediate aerial attack.
Above him, Orion's furious shouts echoed. "He went into the sewers! Find him! Burn him out!"
Ren didn't waste time. He ran, the darkness of the tunnels his only ally. He could hear the heavy thud of the Griffon landing above, followed by the clatter of armored boots as Orion's ground forces began to converge on the sewer entrances.
Lia caught up to him, stumbling through the sludge. "Ren, we can't stay here! The guards will flood the tunnels with toxic gas if they can't find us! It's standard protocol for rogue mages!"
"I know," Ren said, his voice grim. He could feel the growing pressure, the increasing hunger of his Soul Armament. He was out of mana crystals. The sewer rats provided meager Void Points but did little for his active MP.
He looked at Lia, her face streaked with grime, her eyes still wide with a mixture of fear and growing awe. "Can you fight?"
Lia nodded, pulling out a small, ornate dagger from her boot. "Not like you, but I trained with our father. Basic forms. If you give me an opening, I can protect myself."
"Good," Ren said. He could feel the subtle vibrations in the stone, the heavy boots of the Royal Guards above them. They were getting closer.
"This way!" Lia pointed to a narrow, crumbling passage that led deeper into the subterranean maze. "It leads to the old Undercity. It's supposed to be impassable, full of monsters and collapsed sections, but it's our only chance."
Ren didn't question her. He trusted her knowledge of the city's hidden paths. They plunged into the deeper darkness, the stench of decay growing stronger.
Suddenly, a low growl echoed from the passage ahead. It wasn't human. It was deep, guttural, and accompanied by the wet slithering sound of something large dragging itself through the muck.
[Warning: Abomination Detected!]
[Enemy: Greater Sewer Lurker (Level 25)]
[Threat Level: Medium]
Ren's eyes glowed with renewed intensity. The hunger in his chest pulsed. This wasn't just a threat. This was a meal.
"Stay behind me," Ren ordered, drawing his hand back, the Void Orb manifesting in his palm. "Looks like dinner is ready."
The lurker emerged—a hideous creature of pale, rubbery flesh, its body composed of countless tentacle-like limbs, its single, bioluminescent eye glowing sickly green in the darkness. It was massive, filling the entire narrow passage. It opened its mouth, revealing rows of needle-sharp teeth, and let out a deafening shriek.
But Ren wasn't afraid. He was just hungry.
