Chapter 31 - THE HOUR OF GLASS

# CHAPTER 31: THE HOUR OF GLASS

The letter lies on the table.

A single sheet of paper. White. Crisp. Innocent.

*But the words... the words are poison.*

Alana stares at the ink. Black. Sharp. Final.

*"I know about the child. Surrender the throne. Or watch everything you love burn."*

She reads it again. And again. And again.

*He knows. Marcus knows.*

*How? How does he know?*

The room is silent. Alexander stands by the window. His back to her. His shoulders rigid. His fists clenched at his sides.

*He's afraid. I can smell it. Thick. Heavy. Suffocating.*

*He thinks he's failed. Thinks he's lost.*

*But we haven't lost yet. Not while we're still breathing.*

"How?" Her voice is steady. Calmer than she feels. "How did he find out?"

Alexander turns. His face is a mask of stone. But his eyes... his eyes are broken.

"I don't know." His voice is rough. "Someone talked. Someone betrayed us. The clinic. The transfer. The results." He runs a hand through his hair. "We were so careful."

*Careful. But not careful enough.*

*Because the enemy is inside. Not just outside.*

Alana sits on the edge of the bed. Her hand drifts to her abdomen. The life inside her. Tiny. Fragile. Unaware of the danger closing in.

*My baby. My child. Threatened before it even takes its first breath.*

*The anger starts deep. In the wolf part of her soul. Rising. Burning. Demanding action.*

"Then we find out who." Her voice is cold. Hard. "And we make them pay."

---

The walk to the dungeon is long.

The mansion has a basement. Hidden. Secure. Used for storage. And occasionally. For prisoners.

*The messenger. Waiting. Smug. Certain of his safety.*

*He thinks we won't touch him. Thinks Marcus protects him.*

*He's wrong.*

Alana descends the stairs. Alexander beside her. Derek and William behind her. A small army. Ready for anything.

*The dungeon is cold. Stone walls. Iron bars. The smell of damp and decay.*

*And fear. The messenger's fear. Buried under layers of arrogance.*

He sits in a cell. Hands still bound. His back against the wall. His eyes watch them approach. Calculating. Cold.

*Not afraid. Not yet.*

"Who told you?" Alexander's voice is low. Dangerous. A growl rumbling beneath the words.

The messenger smiles.

"Wouldn't you like to know."

Alana steps forward. Past Alexander. Past the guards. She stops inches from the bars.

*The messenger's smile falters. Slightly. He sees something in her eyes. Something that scares him.*

"You think Marcus protects you." Her voice is soft. Almost gentle. "But Marcus isn't here. I am."

*She lets the wolf rise. Just a little. Her eyes shift. Her claws extend. Her teeth sharpen.*

"And I'm pregnant. Which means my hormones are unstable. My emotions are unpredictable. And my patience..." She tilts her head. "Is nonexistent."

The messenger swallows.

*Good. He should be afraid.*

"Tell me who the spy is. And I'll let you live."

The messenger hesitates. His eyes dart to Alexander. To Derek. To William.

*Looking for an escape. Finding none.*

"You're bluffing."

Alana smiles. Shows her teeth.

"Try me."

---

The interrogation continues.

Hours pass. Questions. Threats. Silence.

*The messenger is strong. Trained. Resistant to pain.*

*But everyone breaks. Eventually.*

Alana sits on a chair outside the cell. Watching. Waiting. Her presence a constant reminder of the danger.

*Inside. Derek and William work on him. Words. Pressure. Intimidation.*

*They won't torture him. Not yet. That's a line we haven't crossed.*

*But we might have to. If he doesn't talk.*

Finally. A crack.

"Wait." The messenger's voice is hoarse. Broken. "Wait. I'll talk."

Alana stands. Moves to the bars.

"I'm listening."

The messenger looks up. His face is pale. His eyes are defeated.

"I don't know who the spy is." He swallows. "But I know how we get messages out. There's a dead drop. In the forest. North of the border. A hollow tree. Marked with a crescent moon."

*Information. Finally. A lead.*

"And the spy? How do they communicate?"

"They leave notes. In the drop. We collect them. Once a week." The messenger's voice trembles. "That's all I know. I swear."

*Maybe true. Maybe a lie. But it's something.*

Alana nods to Derek.

"Take him back to his cell. Post guards. No one speaks to him without my authorization."

*We have a lead. A place to investigate.*

*The war continues.*

---

The forest is dark.

Alana walks beside Alexander. Derek and William flanking them. A small group. Quiet. Careful.

*The hollow tree. North of the border. Where secrets are traded.*

*Where traitors hide.*

The walk takes an hour. The forest is dense. The path is overgrown. Unused by anyone but animals.

*And spies.*

They reach the clearing. The tree stands in the center. Old. Rotted. A hole in its trunk.

*The dead drop. Waiting.*

William approaches first. Checks for traps. Finds none.

He reaches inside. Withdraws a small package. Wrapped in cloth. Sealed with wax.

*A message. Waiting to be collected.*

Alexander takes the package. Opens it carefully. Inside. A folded paper.

He reads. His face goes pale.

"What is it?" Alana moves closer.

*He hands her the paper. His hand is shaking.*

The message is short. Written in a familiar hand.

*"The transfer was successful. The heir grows. Strike soon. Before the bond strengthens."*

*The spy. Reporting on us. On me. On my baby.*

*The words blur. Alana's vision turns red.*

*Betrayal. From within. From someone close.*

---

The walk back is silent.

Alana's mind races. Turning over possibilities. Suspicions. Fears.

*Who? Who would betray us? Who would sell us to Marcus?*

*Someone at the clinic? A nurse? A doctor?*

*Someone in the pack? A warrior? An elder?*

*Someone in the house? A servant? A guard?*

*Or worse. Someone I trust. Someone I love.*

She looks at Alexander. Walking beside her. His face is dark. His thoughts hidden.

*He's thinking the same thing. Wondering. Suspecting.*

*The enemy is close. Too close.*

They reach the mansion. The sun is setting. The sky is red. Like blood.

*An omen. Or just a sunset. Hard to tell anymore.*

Inside. The house is quiet. Eerily so.

"Where is everyone?" Alana's voice is a whisper.

Alexander shakes his head.

"I don't know."

*The fear rises. Sharp. Sudden.*

*Something's wrong.*

They move through the halls. Checking rooms. Finding no one.

*Empty. The mansion is empty.*

Until they reach the main hall.

---

The main hall is full.

Every pack member. Every servant. Every guard. Standing in silence. Facing the center.

*Something is happening. Something bad.*

Alana pushes through the crowd. Alexander beside her. They reach the front.

And stop.

In the center of the room. A body lies on the floor.

*Elder Marcus. The one who questioned Alexander. The one who doubted.*

*Dead. His throat torn out. His eyes open. Staring at nothing.*

And beside him. Standing over the body. A woman.

*Sarah. A pack member. A mother. A friend.*

*Her hands are covered in blood. Her face is blank. Unseeing.*

Alana steps forward. Her heart pounding.

"Sarah. What happened?"

Sarah looks up. Her eyes are empty. Hollow. Possessed.

"He made me do it." Her voice is flat. Monotone. "Marcus made me do it."

*Marcus. In her head. Controlling her.*

*The possession. We thought it was just Alana. Just the mate bond.*

*But it's not. It's anyone. Anyone weak enough. Vulnerable enough.*

Sarah's hand moves. Raises something to her mouth. A pill. Small. White.

*Poison.*

"No!" Alana lunges. Too late.

Sarah swallows. Her body convulses. She falls to the floor. Foam bubbling from her lips.

*Dead. In seconds. By her own hand.*

*Two bodies. Two deaths. A message from Marcus.*

*I can reach anyone. Anywhere. No one is safe.*

---

The hall is chaos.

People scream. Cry. Shout. Panic spreads like fire.

*The enemy isn't just outside. He's inside. In our minds. In our homes.*

Alexander grabs Alana's arm. Pulls her close.

"We need to get you out of here. Somewhere safe. Somewhere he can't reach you."

*Safe. Where? Where is safe?*

"The caves." Derek appears beside them. His face is pale. But his voice is steady. "The old caves. In the mountains. They're protected. Warded. No one knows about them except the inner circle."

*The caves. Of course. The place we hide in times of danger.*

*The place where hope goes to survive.*

Alana shakes her head.

"I'm not leaving. Not while the pack is in danger. Not while Marcus is—"

"You're pregnant." Alexander's voice is sharp. Desperate. "You're carrying our child. If Marcus gets to you..."

*If he gets to me. The baby dies. Or worse. Becomes his weapon.*

*I want to fight. To stand. To protect.*

*But I have to protect the baby first.*

She nods slowly.

"The caves. For now. But I'm coming back. As soon as it's safe."

*Because I'm not hiding. Not forever. Not while my pack suffers.*

---

The preparations begin.

Vivian packs supplies. Derek organizes guards. William traces routes.

*Moving Alana. Secretly. Quietly. Without alerting Marcus.*

*Easier said than done.*

Alana stands in her room. Watching the chaos. Her hand on her abdomen.

*Inside. My baby grows. Unaware. Innocent.*

*Outside. The world burns. Death. Betrayal. Fear.*

*I should feel safe. Protected. Loved.*

*Instead I feel like a target. A pawn. A prisoner.*

*But not for long.*

She turns to Alexander. Who stands in the doorway. Watching her.

"I need to ask you something."

"Anything."

"Who do you think the spy is?"

*The question hangs in the air. Heavy. Dangerous.*

*Because we both know the answer. We just don't want to say it.*

Alexander's jaw tightens.

"I don't know. But I'll find out." He steps closer. Takes her hands. "I swear. On my life. On my honor. I will protect you. And our child."

*His eyes are sincere. Desperate. Broken.*

*He believes it. He wants to believe it.*

*But so much has already gone wrong.*

Alana nods. Squeezes his hands.

"I know you will." She rises on her toes. Kisses him gently. "But I need you to do something else."

"What?"

"Teach me how to fight him. Not just shielding. Not just hiding." Her eyes are fierce. "Teach me how to kill him. If it comes to that."

*Because shielding isn't enough. Running isn't enough.*

*Eventually. We have to strike. To end this.*

Alexander stares at her. Then nods slowly.

"Alright. But we start tomorrow. In the caves."

*Training. For war. For survival. For the future.*

---

Night falls.

The mansion is locked down. Guards tripled. Wards reinforced.

*But no one feels safe. Because safety is an illusion.*

Alana lies in bed. Her body exhausted. Her mind racing.

*Tomorrow. We leave. For the caves. For hiding.*

*Tomorrow. The next chapter begins.*

*But tonight. I want to sleep. To forget. To dream.*

She closes her eyes. Drifts. Slowly. Reluctantly.

And then. The dream comes.

---

The dream is different.

Alana stands in a meadow. Green grass. Blue sky. Flowers swaying in the breeze.

*Peaceful. Beautiful. Safe.*

*Not like the nightmare. Not like the darkness.*

A woman approaches. Tall. Dark hair. Silver eyes. Wearing a white dress. Flowing. Ethereal.

*She looks familiar. Like someone I've seen before. In memories. In dreams.*

"Alana." The woman's voice is soft. Melodic. "I've been waiting for you."

*Waiting. For me.*

"Who are you?"

The woman smiles.

"I am the Moon Goddess. And I have a message for you."

*The Moon Goddess. The mother of all wolves. The source of our power.*

*Here. In my dream. Speaking to me.*

Alana bows her head. Instinctive. Reverent.

"Goddess."

The woman reaches out. Touches Alana's abdomen. Warmth spreads through her body. Golden. Bright. Powerful.

"Your child is special. Born of two powerful bloodlines. The white wolf and the golden alpha." Her voice is solemn. "He will be a leader. A bridge. A hope for all our kind."

*A boy. She said 'he'.*

*My son.*

"But he faces great danger. From the darkness. From the one who seeks to consume." The Goddess's eyes are sad. "You must protect him. At all costs."

*I will. I swear.*

"How? How do I protect him from Marcus? From the possession? From the betrayal?"

The Goddess is silent for a moment. Then she leans close. Her lips brushing Alana's ear.

"Trust the wolf inside you. She is older than you know. Stronger than you imagine. She is the key to defeating the darkness."

*The wolf. Inside me. My other half.*

*The key. To everything.*

The Goddess steps back. Her form begins to fade. Transparent. Ethereal.

"Remember. Trust the wolf. And trust yourself."

*Wait. Don't go. I have so many questions—*

The dream fades. The meadow disappears. Darkness returns.

---

Alana wakes.

Her body is trembling. Her heart is pounding. Her mind is spinning.

*The Moon Goddess. A message. Trust the wolf.*

*What does that mean? How do I trust something I've feared my whole life?*

She sits up. Looks around the room. The shadows. The light. The world.

*Inside her. The wolf stirs. Awake. Alert. Listening.*

*For the first time. Alana doesn't push her down. Doesn't hide.*

*She listens.*

*I hear you. I'm ready.*

*Help me protect our child.*

The wolf doesn't answer with words. But with a feeling. Warmth. Strength. Unity.

*We are one. We are strong. We will survive.*
