Mera emerged from the bedroom wearing one of my shirts and nothing else. The fabric barely reached the middle of her thighs. Her red skin caught the morning light in ways that made focusing on coffee extremely difficult.
"You're meeting Vivian alone."
"Cheon told you."
"Cheon tells me everything." She walked past me toward the kitchen. Her tail swishing with agitation. "I don't like it."
"Noted."
"That's it? Noted?"
"What do you want me to say?"
She spun around. Her green eyes sharp with something between anger and fear. "I want you to say you'll let me shadow you through the In-Between. I want you to say you're not walking into a potential trap without backup. I want you to say you're not being an idiot."
"I can't say any of those things."
"Why not?"
"Because Vivian's scared. And scared people need to feel safe before they tell the truth."
"She might be working for your father."
"She might be."
"She might be leading you into an ambush."
"Also possible."
