Chapter 31 - Alignment

Chapter 11

The announcement comes without warning.

"As a final review exercise," the teacher says calmly, "the top two will present tomorrow's problem breakdown together."

The classroom freezes.

Kaito turns slowly.

Yui inhales dramatically.

Hana closes her eyes like she predicted this.

Emilia does not move.

Together.

She hears the word like a trigger.

Ren remains perfectly still.

"Emilia Laurent and Ren Takahashi," the teacher continues, "coordinate and present section B."

Murmurs ripple instantly.

"Ohhh." "Of course." "That makes sense."

It does make sense.

That's the problem.

Emilia lifts her chin slightly.

"Understood."

Ren nods once.

"Yes."

Their timing again.

Simultaneous.

Yui claps softly.

"This is destiny."

"It is logistics," Emilia replies sharply.

Ren says calmly, "It's practical."

They say it at the same time.

The class laughs.

Emilia feels heat creep up her neck.

This is becoming predictable.

Predictable is dangerous.

After class, they remain seated.

Books open.

Presentation outline blank.

Kaito hovers dramatically.

"I feel like I'm witnessing history."

"Leave," Hana says.

Yui leans over the desk.

"You two are weirdly good at this."

"At what," Emilia asks.

"Matching."

"We are not matching."

Ren says calmly, "We are not."

Simultaneous.

Yui slowly leans back.

"Oh my god."

Emilia inhales slowly through her nose.

Focus.

Task.

Structure.

Safe.

"We divide the sections evenly," she says crisply.

Ren nods.

"Intro and closing together."

Her pen pauses.

Together again.

"That is efficient," she says instead.

He watches her.

Carefully.

She doesn't look up.

They begin outlining.

Within minutes, their sentences start aligning without discussion.

She writes a phrase.

He finishes it verbally.

He draws a diagram.

She annotates exactly where he intended.

Kaito watches like he's observing wildlife.

"You didn't even discuss that."

"We don't need to," Ren says.

Emilia stiffens.

"We are following logical sequence."

Ren glances at her.

"We think similarly."

Her pulse spikes.

"That is not unusual."

"It's not common."

She doesn't answer.

Because it feels too close to the truth.

The next day, they stand at the front of the classroom.

Side by side.

Not touching.

But close enough to feel the heat of each other's presence.

Emilia begins smoothly.

Clear voice. Confident posture. Precise tone.

Ren transitions seamlessly when she finishes.

No overlap. No hesitation.

The class watches in near silence.

They don't need notes.

They don't interrupt each other.

They move like—

Yui whispers from the back:

"They rehearsed."

They didn't.

That's what unsettles Emilia.

They didn't.

Ren gestures toward the board.

Emilia immediately picks up the explanation thread.

He glances at her.

She adjusts without thinking.

It feels effortless.

Which is the problem.

When they finish, the teacher smiles.

"Excellent. You two have remarkable compatibility."

The word lands like a crack in glass.

Compatibility.

Kaito chokes.

Yui beams.

Hana mutters, "There it is."

Emilia straightens.

"It is structural alignment."

The teacher laughs softly.

"It is more than that."

Ren says calmly, "We prepared."

"We didn't," Yui whispers loudly.

Emilia feels every pair of eyes on them.

She steps back first.

Distance.

She needs distance.

During break, the subtle jealousy arrives again.

The same top-five girl from earlier approaches.

But this time—

She smiles at Emilia first.

"That was impressive."

Emilia nods politely.

"Thank you."

Then the girl turns to Ren.

"You two really are in sync."

Emilia's stomach tightens.

Ren shrugs lightly.

"We study."

The girl laughs.

"You'd make a good team."

Emilia's pulse spikes.

"We are classmates."

The girl tilts her head slightly.

"Sure."

There's something in her tone.

Something knowing.

Emilia doesn't like it.

The girl continues:

"If you ever want to join our study group, Ren—"

The invitation lingers.

Emilia's fingers tighten around her notebook.

Ren doesn't hesitate.

"I'm good."

The answer is immediate.

Firm.

The girl pauses.

"Oh."

Ren continues calmly.

"We already have one."

His eyes flick briefly toward Emilia.

Just for a second.

But long enough.

The girl nods slowly.

"Right."

She leaves.

Silence.

Kaito stares openly.

Yui covers her mouth to hide a grin.

Hana shakes her head.

Emilia turns slowly toward Ren.

"You declined."

"Yes."

"You didn't have to."

"I know."

"Then why."

He studies her expression carefully.

"Because I'm good."

Her chest tightens.

"That is repetitive."

He almost smiles.

"You are."

She exhales slowly.

She doesn't ask what that meant.

Because she knows.

And that terrifies her.

Later that afternoon, the teacher stops them briefly.

"You two balance each other well."

Emilia stiffens.

"We are competitive."

"Yes," the teacher says kindly. "But not destructive."

Ren nods once.

Emilia feels something unfamiliar.

Not rivalry.

Not jealousy.

Not even fear.

Something quieter.

Something steady.

Balance.

The word lingers as they walk out of school together.

Not planned.

Just... aligned.

She breaks the silence first.

"You enjoyed that."

"What."

"The presentation."

"It was efficient."

"That's not what I meant."

He glances at her.

"I liked working with you."

Her breath catches.

That was too direct.

She looks away immediately.

"You're too comfortable."

"You're not."

"That is irrelevant."

He stops walking.

She takes two more steps before noticing.

Turns back.

He looks at her.

Calm.

Certain.

"You're not running anymore."

Her heart pounds once.

Hard.

She swallows.

"Don't interpret."

"I'm not."

"You are."

He steps closer.

Not touching.

But closer than usual.

"You're scared of how easy this feels."

Her breath stutters.

She doesn't deny it this time.

She just says quietly:

"Tu te trompes."

(You're wrong.)

English reply.

"Am I."

She doesn't answer.

Because the problem isn't whether he's wrong.

It's whether she wants him to be right.

And that is far more dangerous.

Close Range

The evening study session wasn't planned.

It never is.

It just... happens.

Kaito panics. Yui suggests meeting. Hana agrees. Ren says nothing. Emilia doesn't object.

And somehow, they end up at the small café near Seiryo Academy.

Warm lights. Low chatter. Tables too close together.

Dangerous proximity.

Kaito is immediately overwhelmed by caffeine.

"I will conquer finals."

"You will not," Hana says.

"I might."

"You won't."

Yui leans across the table toward Emilia.

"So. Presentation power couple."

"There is no couple."

Ren says calmly, "There isn't."

Simultaneous.

Again.

Yui nearly falls out of her chair laughing.

"You can't keep doing that."

Emilia exhales slowly.

"We are not doing anything."

Ren nods.

"We're not."

Kaito slams his notebook open.

"I need help with section C."

Bless him.

He unintentionally saves them.

They begin reviewing again.

Structured. Focused. Contained.

But the table is smaller than the classroom desks.

Their knees brush once.

Accidentally.

Emilia freezes.

Ren doesn't move.

She waits.

He doesn't pull away.

She doesn't either.

It becomes... normal.

That's worse.

Kaito groans dramatically over a problem.

"Why does probability hate me."

"It doesn't," Hana replies.

"You just don't respect it."

Emilia reaches across the table to point something out—

And her hand brushes Ren's.

Warmer than expected.

She pulls back instantly.

He doesn't.

He just adjusts the page slightly.

"Your explanation earlier," he says quietly, "was cleaner."

Her heart jumps.

"You're repeating."

"You're deflecting."

She narrows her eyes.

"You're too observant."

"You're too obvious."

Silence.

Yui looks between them slowly.

"Oh."

Kaito is too busy suffering to notice.

Hana definitely notices.

Emilia clears her throat.

"Let's continue."

Later, Kaito and Hana step outside to argue about flashcards.

Yui gets distracted by her phone.

For a moment—

It's just them.

Across the small café table.

Soft light between them.

Emilia exhales slowly.

"You declined quickly."

"Hmm?"

"The study group invitation."

He looks at her.

Calm.

"I said I'm good."

"That's not an explanation."

"It is."

"No."

"Yes."

She leans forward slightly.

"Pourquoi."

(Why.)

He holds her gaze.

Longer this time.

Then answers in English.

"Because I don't want to study with them."

"That is vague."

"It's not."

She waits.

He doesn't elaborate.

The silence stretches.

Then—

"I prefer this."

Her pulse skips.

"This?"

"This."

The café. The small table. Her across from him.

Her chest tightens.

"That is inefficient."

"It's not."

She leans back slightly.

"You're becoming sentimental."

"No."

"Yes."

He tilts his head.

"You're nervous."

"I am not."

"You are."

Her fingers tighten around her pen.

She doesn't deny it immediately.

That's new.

Yui returns suddenly.

"You two look intense."

"We are studying," Emilia replies instantly.

Ren nods.

"We are."

Yui smirks.

"Sure."

The moment breaks.

But it lingers.

An hour later, the café begins closing.

They pack slowly.

The others leave ahead of them.

Which is suspicious.

Very suspicious.

Emilia and Ren step outside into cool evening air.

Streetlights glow softly.

The quiet feels different at night.

Less structured.

More honest.

They walk side by side.

No competition. No audience.

Just the sound of their footsteps.

"You pushed hard earlier," he says.

"I am competitive."

"You were shaking."

She stops walking.

"What."

"Your hands."

She hides them instinctively.

"I was not."

"You were."

Silence.

She exhales slowly.

"You like pointing out weakness."

"No."

"Yes."

"I like understanding it."

Her chest tightens.

"That is not your responsibility."

"I didn't say it was."

She looks up at him.

"You think you understand me."

He pauses.

"I think you don't want me to."

The air stills.

Her throat tightens unexpectedly.

"That is incorrect."

"Is it."

She looks away first.

Again.

She hates that pattern.

"You enjoyed the presentation," she says instead.

"Yes."

"Why."

"Because it was easy."

Her breath catches.

"Easy."

"Yes."

She swallows.

"That is not flattering."

"It is."

"How."

"Because we didn't try."

The words settle heavily.

Didn't try.

And yet it worked.

Her pulse quickens.

"That is coincidence."

"No."

"It is."

"No."

They stand under a streetlight now.

Close.

Not touching.

But close.

The quiet stretches.

She feels something building in her chest.

Too warm. Too unstable.

She shouldn't say it.

She knows she shouldn't.

But the words rise anyway.

"Si ça devient trop facile... je vais perdre."

(If it becomes too easy... I'll lose.)

The sentence slips out softly.

Not sharp.Not teasing.

Honest.

Ren's expression shifts.

Softer.

English reply.

"You're not losing."

"You don't know that."

"I do."

"How."

He steps half a pace closer.

Not invading.

Just closing distance.

"Because you don't lose when you stop fighting."

Her heart slams.

The implication lands.

This isn't about exams anymore.

She swallows.

"You're assuming."

"I'm observing."

"You're wrong."

"Am I."

The rhythm again.

But this time—

It feels fragile.

She looks at him.

Really looks.

He's steady.

Always steady.

And that steadiness is what scares her.

She steps back slightly.

Restoring distance.

"I will not tie again."

He almost smiles.

"You're not competing with me."

She stiffens.

"Yes I am."

"No."

Silence.

The streetlight hums softly above them.

"You're competing with yourself," he says quietly.

That lands deeper than expected.

Her throat tightens.

She doesn't respond immediately.

Because he's right.

And she hates that he sees it.

They resume walking.

Closer than before.

Not touching.

But the distance is smaller now.

She doesn't move away.

He doesn't either.

The tension isn't explosive.

It's quiet.

Electric in a restrained way.

She feels dangerously close to saying something irreversible.

So she does what she always does.

She shields it.

"Tu es insupportable."

(You're unbearable.)

English reply.

"You like that."

Her cheeks heat again.

She looks away.

But she doesn't deny it this time.
