Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Orders in the Dark

The cold blue fire in the fortress flickered, casting long shadows along the stone walls. Lord Varyn stood tall, though his body still trembled from the strange sickness that coursed through him. His eyes glowed faintly red as he stared into the flames, lost in thought.

A heavy knock echoed through the hall. "Enter," Varyn commanded, his voice low but sharp.

The doors opened, and a tall, armored man stepped in — Rathen, Varyn's most trusted guardian. His black armor gleamed faintly in the torchlight.

"My lord," Rathen said, bowing deeply.

Varyn turned to him. "Rathen," he said, his voice steady despite the burning pain in his chest. "Prepare a force. Horses, supplies, weapons — everything necessary. We are moving to the Northern Black Caves.

"The witch," he muttered, his voice low, "the one they call Serrina the Wise… she alone knows how to touch the darkness within me."

Rathen hesitated. "The caves, my lord… They are far. "Through dark forests, cliffs, and cursed valleys. Many never return from her lands."

Varyn's red eyes burned with determination and suffering. "I do not care," he hissed. "The sickness is eating me alive. If I do not find a way to control it… it will destroy me before I can take what is mine. Prepare the horses. Gather the scouts. We leave at first light."

Rathen bowed, hiding the unease in his expression. "As you command, my lord."

Varyn stepped closer to the fire, his hand brushing the map. "Serrina knows the secrets of shadow and flame. She will know the cure — or the way to bend this sickness to my will. I will not die. The throne will be mine. The kingdom will kneel… or burn."

The sickness inside him pulsed painfully, black veins crawling faintly along his hands and neck. He clenched his teeth, a shiver of both agony and anticipation running through him. "Tonight, I endure. Tomorrow… I take control."

Varyn stood alone in the hall, staring at the mountains on the horizon, feeling both fear and the fire of ambition.

Soon, he would face dangers beyond imagining. But he had no choice — the witch in the northern mountains held the only key to his survival and his ultimate power.
