Chapter 31 - Chapter 31 Diverging Paths

The battlefield at Hestia Colony faded into silence.

Rescue teams moved in.

Wreckage drifted.

And for the first time since Helix Vanguard's escalation began—

Humanity had survived a direct extermination strike.

---

The *Argonaut*'s hangar was alive with controlled chaos.

Crew members rushed between stations, medics assisted returning pilots, and engineers immediately began assessing damage to Trident's units.

Leon stepped down from Aegis' cockpit, boots hitting the deck with a dull metallic echo.

Before he could take more than a few steps—

Mira grabbed him.

Hard.

"You absolute idiot!" she snapped.

Leon blinked. "Good to see you too."

"You nearly detonated a colony!" she shot back.

"I didn't."

"You were about to!"

Leon smirked faintly. "That's why I didn't."

Mira stared at him for a moment… then let out a frustrated breath and shoved him lightly.

"…Don't do that again."

"No promises."

---

Across the hangar, Rika approached, tablet in hand.

"Leon," she said quickly, "we've been trying to track the unknown Gundam."

Leon's expression shifted slightly.

"And?"

"It disappeared right after the battle," she replied. "No jump signature, no transmission logs. It's like it was never there."

Mira frowned. "That's not possible."

Rika shook her head.

"It is if they masked their exit."

Leon folded his arms.

"He didn't want to be found."

---

Elsewhere…

A lone warship drifted at the edge of sensor range.

Inside its hangar, the AGE Gundam settled onto its platform with a soft mechanical hiss.

Flit Asuno remained in the cockpit for a moment longer.

Silent.

Thinking.

The battle replayed in his mind.

The Helix weapon.

Variable Two.

And—

The other Gundam.

"…Leon," he murmured, having caught the name over open comms.

He removed his helmet slowly.

"That pilot…"

He wasn't reckless.

But he wasn't predictable either.

Flit stepped out of the cockpit.

A crew member approached cautiously. "Flit, the captain wants a full report."

Flit nodded absently.

"I'll give it."

But his thoughts were elsewhere.

---

Back on the *Argonaut*…

The bridge had shifted from crisis mode to analysis.

Rika brought up the battle data once more.

"The unknown Gundam used a transformation system unlike anything in our database," she explained. "High-speed mode conversion, combined with precision targeting."

Mira leaned forward.

"So basically—fast and deadly."

"More than that," Rika said. "Efficient. Every shot counted. No wasted movement."

Leon listened quietly.

"He wasn't reacting," Leon said.

Rika nodded.

"He was predicting."

---

Captain Rolf turned toward Leon.

"You've fought both Helix elites now."

Leon's expression hardened slightly.

"Yeah."

"And now you've fought alongside someone who can match them."

Leon didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"Not match," he said.

"Different."

---

Hours later, Leon returned to the hangar.

Aegis stood partially dismantled again, engineers working on its frame.

Nearby, Flint leaned against a console, watching schematics scroll past.

"You met him," Flint said without looking up.

Leon stopped beside him.

"Yeah."

Flint glanced over.

"And?"

Leon thought for a moment.

"He's precise."

Flint smirked. "That obvious, huh?"

"No," Leon said. "It's more than that."

He looked back at his Gundam.

"He doesn't fight like he's in the moment."

Flint raised an eyebrow.

"He fights like he's already seen the outcome."

---

Flint tapped a control, bringing up a side-by-side combat analysis.

Leon's Aegis.

Flit's AGE Gundam.

Movement patterns overlapped briefly—then diverged sharply.

"You rely on instinct," Flint said. "Adaptation mid-fight."

Leon nodded.

"He relies on calculation," Flint continued. "Pre-planned responses, predictive modeling."

Leon crossed his arms.

"That's a dangerous combination."

Flint grinned.

"Or a powerful one."

---

Far away…

Flit stood alone in a quiet corridor of his ship.

The stars stretched endlessly outside the viewport.

He replayed the moment again.

The core.

The decision.

Leon had hesitated.

Not out of fear.

Out of consideration.

Flit's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…He prioritizes people over outcomes."

That was a weakness.

But also—

A strength.

Flit exhaled slowly.

"If we fight again…"

He didn't finish the sentence.

He didn't need to.

---

Back on the *Argonaut*…

Leon sat in the cockpit of Aegis during a calibration test.

Systems flickered to life.

The hum of the machine filled the enclosed space.

He rested his hands lightly on the controls.

For a moment, he imagined the battlefield again.

The Helix weapon.

Variable Two.

And the other Gundam at his side.

Different.

But aligned.

Leon spoke quietly.

"…Next time, we won't just survive."

The cockpit lights reflected in his eyes.

"We'll win."

---

In the depths of Helix space…

The commander observed new data streams.

Two pilots.

Two Gundams.

Two evolution paths.

"Humanity has bifurcated," he said.

Variable Two stood nearby.

"Then we refine the test."

The massive new weapon platform behind them began activating additional systems.

More complex.

More dangerous.

Designed not just to overwhelm—

But to force cooperation.

---

Back among the stars…

Two Gundams moved along separate paths.

Unaware of how soon those paths would collide again.

But the war had changed.

It was no longer about survival alone.

It was about which future would define humanity.
