The semi-final took place under the towering concrete rim of the Estádio Mineirão in Belo Horizonte. It was the exact ground where Germany had dismantled Brazil only days earlier, yet from the opening seconds, it was obvious the pitch was hosting an entirely different contest.
Brazil had marched into this stadium riding an overwhelming wave of national emotion, completely lacking a structural fallback once things went sideways. Spain, on the other hand, walked out with cold discipline and a meticulous game plan.
Spain (4-3-1-2): Casillas; Azpilicueta, Ramos, Piqué, Alba; Busquets, Xabi Alonso; Xavi, Iniesta; Lorenzo, Costa.
Germany (4-2-3-1): Neuer; Lahm, Boateng, Hummels, Höwedes; Schweinsteiger, Khedira; Müller, Kroos, Özil; Klose.
Del Bosque's tactical blueprint stood firm from the outset. Busquets and Xabi Alonso stayed deep, effectively locking down the central corridors where Kroos and Özil had sliced Brazil apart. That double barrier forced Germany out toward the flanks, where Alba and Azpilicueta held tight. Ahead of them, Lorenzo dropped off Boateng's shoulder to offer an outlet, while Costa stayed pinned against Hummels to keep the German backline honest.
For the first twenty minutes, it played out like high-speed grandmaster chess. Both teams possessed the technical quality to demand the ball, and neither side was willing to surrender the initiative. The midfield turned into an absolute trench fight. Kroos dueling Xavi, Khedira snapping into Iniesta, and Schweinsteiger clashing with Busquets.
"Look at the sheer quality in the middle third," Inés observed as play swung rapidly from flank to flank. "Neither team is giving up an inch of territory. Kroos and Xavi are essentially dictating the cadence of this match on two or three touches. The side that controls that central duel is going to take this tie."
In the 26th minute, Germany struck first.
It was a sequence built on pure precision. A sharp passing pattern swept across the German front line, moving through eleven crisp touches that gradually pulled Spain's defensive line half a step out of alignment. Özil drifted across the edge of the penalty area, held the ball just long enough to draw Piqué's eyes, and slipped a disguised through-ball into the box.
Klose had already made his move. At thirty-six, the veteran striker anticipated the flight before Piqué could recover his footing. Klose took one touch across Casillas and tucked a low, clinical finish into the bottom corner.
Fweet—!
1-0, Germany.
The all-time World Cup top scorer wheeled away with a measured fist pump.
"And there it is," Santiago said on the call, leaning into his mic. "This is the exact danger when facing this machine-like German side. You cannot lose focus against them, not even for one second. Piqué commits his eyes to Özil, and Klose is gone behind him before anyone can react."
Spain, however, refused to waver. Unlike Brazil's sudden collapse under pressure, this Spanish core had spent years learning how to handle tournament adversity. Casillas immediately clapped his gloves together and barked at his central defenders to lock in. Over on the sideline, Del Bosque made a calm, downward pressing gesture with both hands, urging his players to retain their shape and let the ball do the work.
Six minutes later, Spain produced an answer.
The equalizer came directly through the link-up Del Bosque had drawn up during training. Lorenzo dropped deep into the center circle, pulling Boateng out of the German back four to close him down. Diego Costa instantly recognized the space and surged into the vacated channel. With Boateng leaning heavily into his back, Lorenzo didn't waste time trying to turn into traffic. He laid off a crisp first-time pass into Iniesta's path, spun off his marker, and sprinted straight into the open seam.
Iniesta didn't even take a touch to set himself. He carved a first-time through-ball with the outside of his boot, dropping it smoothly into the channel.
Lorenzo gathered the pass in full stride, bursting into the penalty box with Manuel Neuer charging off his line. For a fraction of a second, the image mirrored their Champions League duel in Lisbon, the giant goalkeeper spreading himself wide to cut down every available angle.
Instead of trying to drill it past Neuer or lift another chip, Lorenzo spotted Costa charging alongside him. He dragged his studs across the ball and squared a soft pass across the face of goal.
Costa arrived on cue and rolled the ball into the unguarded net.
Fweet—!
1-1.
Lorenzo wheeled away, pointing both hands toward Costa as they collided near the corner flag, both forwards roaring into the humid evening air as Ramos and Alba rushed over to join them.
"Unselfish play at its absolute finest," Santiago shouted into his microphone. "Lorenzo drags Boateng out, receives the return from Iniesta, and instead of taking on Neuer, he squares it for Costa. That is how you crack an organized defense. One-all at the Mineirão."
The rest of the first half turned into an all-out tactical battle.
Level again, Germany pushed aggressively to regain their advantage. Müller haunted the right channel, whipping dangerous crosses into the box, while Kroos continued distributing balls from deep. Spain held their ground, with Xabi Alonso and Busquets throwing themselves into tackles to shield the penalty area.
Both sides created genuine openings before the break. Müller drew a sharp diving stop from Casillas at his near post, while Özil whipped a curling effort that shaved the top of the crossbar. At the other end, Lorenzo wriggled free from Khedira to sting Neuer's palms from twenty yards, before Costa headed a corner narrowly wide.
Casillas was outstanding through the final ten minutes of the half. When Kroos lined up a trademark free kick twenty-five yards out, the Spanish captain tipped the dipping effort onto the crossbar with his fingertips, pushing himself up off the grass to rally his back four once more.
The referee's whistle signaled half-time with the tie locked at 1-1.
"This is delivering on every promise that Brazil match missed," Inés remarked as the players headed down the tunnel. "Two heavyweights trading high-level blows. It feels like the kind of match that will ultimately be settled by a moment of individual brilliance."
In the tunnel, both sets of players walked shoulder to shoulder in silence. Lorenzo caught Boateng's eye for a brief second. The Bayern defender looked back with a stern, focused nod, the quiet acknowledgment of two players who had spent the last forty-five minutes testing every inch of each other's game.
Inside the Spanish dressing room, Del Bosque took off his jacket and gathered the squad around the tactical screen.
"We gave them one momentary opening and they took it," Del Bosque said, keeping his tone measured. "Other than that sequence, your positioning and transitions have been top class. We stay composed, we look after the ball, and we don't rush our combinations. The pace of this match is blistering, and as the minutes wear on, space is going to open up between their center-backs."
The manager paused and turned toward Lorenzo, leaning down slightly.
"You worked that link with Diego brilliantly in the first half," Del Bosque told him, his voice steady. "You pulled Boateng right where we needed him. But in a match this balanced, there usually comes a point where the tactical shapes break down. At some point out there, an opportunity will drop that has nothing to do with passing patterns or pulling defenders around. It will just be you, the defender in front of you, and the net."
Del Bosque patted Lorenzo's shoulder firmly. "When that window appears, don't look to lay it off. Trust your boots and finish it."
Lorenzo gave a calm nod. "Got it."
The squad stood up, adjusted their boots, and walked back toward the tunnel together. All that stood between them and the World Cup final were the final forty-five minutes.
