I straightened despite the exhaustion weighing me down.
"So yes, I'll find Anya. I'll use the seer. I'll reclaim the Morozov name and stabilize the realm." My voice dropped. "But I'll do it WITH Selene. Not from across the room. Not by denying what we are to each other."
"Even if it kills you?"
"Especially then."
Edwina stared at me for a long moment. Then she removed her glasses and pinched the bridge of her nose.
"You're a fool," she said, but there was no heat in it. Only resignation. "A stubborn, self-destructive fool."
"I am a fool," I agreed.
"I can't let you do this," she began, but I cut her off.
"Five years without her will be death by a thousand cuts," I told her. "I'd rather my throat be slit—by her."
"Alpha?" My gaze snapped up at my physician. "Alpha, who are you talking to?"
I glanced at the chart in his hand and back to where Edwina had been standing moments ago. But she was gone. Again.
"No one," I replied, my voice flat.
