VANE

She is angry. 

I can see it in the clenching and unclenching of her fists, the way her lips press into a thin line. Waves of frustration vibrate off her—palpable and hot. 

Obviously, she hates being sidelined; she hates being reminded that, in the grand scheme of my plans, she is currently a necessary tool. 

But I don't take the words back. 

Despite Lakh thrashing against my mind like a caged beast, I hold my ground because it is the truth. 

She has lived in an attic her entire life. As much as I pity the girl for what she endured at the hands of her parents, and as much as I secretly applaud her current obsession with books—the way she absorbs knowledge and applies it—she is simply not ready. 

If the ancient language she used to dismantle my father last night is any indication, she has potential, but potential isn't experience.
