Chapter 36 - The Edge of the Sea

The patrol boat's spotlight pinned the small fishing vessel like a bug on glass.

White light flooded the deck—harsh, unblinking. Voices crackled over the loudspeaker in Korean, clipped and commanding:

"Cut your engine! Hands where we can see them! Prepare to be boarded!"

The guide—face hidden under a dark cap—froze at the wheel. His hand hovered over the throttle.

"They've got us. If we run, they'll sink us."

Dad stood at the bow, rifle raised but barrel down. Rain plastered his shirt to his chest.

"We're not running. Not with her in labor."

Ji-eun sat against the cabin wall, legs spread, breathing in short, controlled bursts. Sweat mixed with rain on her face. Her dress was hiked up, panties long discarded. Between contractions she looked calm—almost serene—but every wave of pain made her grip Min-jae's hand until her knuckles turned white.

Min-jae knelt beside her, one arm around her shoulders, the other pressing a folded jacket under her hips.

"Breathe, Mommy. Just breathe. We're right here."

Yumi held Ji-eun's other hand, tears streaming.

"You're so strong, Eomma. The baby's coming. He's coming and we're gonna keep him safe."

Another contraction hit—longer, deeper. Ji-eun cried out, head falling back against the wood.

"It's close… I can feel it… he's coming now…"

The patrol boat drew alongside—bumpers scraping hulls. Three officers in dark uniforms jumped aboard, rifles leveled. Flashlights swept the deck.

The lead officer—older, scarred face—saw Ji-eun first.

"Pregnant woman. In labor. Lower your weapons."

The rifles dipped slightly.

Dad spoke—voice steady despite everything.

"She needs help. Now. We're not resisting."

The scarred officer looked at Ji-eun—really looked. Saw the pain, the fear, the swollen belly. Then he saw Min-jae holding her, Yumi crying beside her, Dad standing protective.

He lowered his own rifle completely.

"Stand down," he ordered his men. "Get the medic kit. Radio for a coast guard medevac. She's in active labor."

Ji-eun's eyes met his.

"Thank you…"

The officer nodded once—tight, conflicted.

"Don't thank me yet. You're still under arrest. But I'm not delivering a baby in handcuffs."

His men moved fast. One brought a medical bag. Another radioed for emergency evacuation. The third kept watch—rifle down but ready.

Min-jae helped Ji-eun lie back on the deck—blankets and jackets piled under her. She gripped his hand through another contraction.

"Min-jae… it hurts… so much…"

He kissed her forehead.

"You're the strongest person alive, Mommy. You've got this. We're all here."

Yumi wiped Ji-eun's face with a wet cloth.

"Breathe with me, Eomma. In… out…"

Dad knelt at Ji-eun's feet. The officer handed him gloves and a sterile field.

"You've done this before?"

Dad shook his head.

"No. But I'm not letting anyone else touch her."

The officer nodded.

"Then listen carefully. She's crowning. The head's coming. Support her perineum—gentle pressure. Don't let it tear too much."

Ji-eun cried out again—raw, primal.

"I need to push… I need to push now…"

The officer guided Dad.

"On the next contraction. Push when she pushes. Steady. Support."

Ji-eun bore down—face contorted, veins standing out on her neck.

"Ahhh—fuck—it's coming—"

Min-jae held her shoulders.

"Push, Mommy… push for our baby…"

Yumi held her hand.

"You're doing it… you're so strong…"

Ji-eun pushed again—long, shuddering.

"I see the head!" Dad's voice cracked. "Keep going—almost there!"

Another push.

The baby's head emerged—dark hair, tiny face.

Ji-eun sobbed.

"My baby… my baby boy…"

Dad supported carefully.

"Shoulders now—one more big push, love."

Ji-eun gathered every ounce of strength left. Pushed—screaming.

The baby slid out—slippery, crying, tiny fists waving.

Dad caught him. Cut the cord with the medic scissors. Wrapped him in a clean blanket.

Ji-eun reached—weak, trembling.

"Let me see him…"

Dad laid the baby on her chest. Small. Perfect. Dark hair like Min-jae's. Eyes already open—looking up at her.

Ji-eun wept openly.

"My son… my beautiful boy…"

Min-jae leaned in. Kissed the baby's head. Then Ji-eun's lips.

"He's ours, Mommy. All ours."

Yumi touched the baby's tiny hand.

"Hi, little brother…"

The officers stood back—silent, watching. One wiped his eyes.

The scarred officer cleared his throat.

"Medevac chopper is five minutes out. They'll take her to a hospital. You three… you're still under arrest. But the child is safe. That's what matters right now."

Ji-eun looked at him—tears streaming.

"Thank you."

The officer nodded.

"Don't thank me. Just… take care of him."

The chopper's thump grew louder—blades slicing rain.

Ji-eun clutched her son tighter. Looked at her family.

"No matter what happens next… we did this. We brought him into the world. Together."

Dad kissed her forehead.

"We did."

Min-jae kissed the baby's head.

"Welcome, little one."

Yumi whispered.

"We love you."

The chopper landed—medics rushing in.

They lifted Ji-eun and the baby onto the stretcher.

As they loaded her, Ji-eun looked back at Min-jae, Dad, Yumi—handcuffs waiting.

She smiled through tears.

"Find me. Find us. No matter what."

The doors closed.

The chopper lifted—lights fading into the rain.

Dad, Min-jae, and Yumi stood on the deck—rain pouring, hands cuffed behind them.

The scarred officer looked at them.

"You'll be processed. But… off the record? That was the bravest thing I've ever seen."

Dad met his eyes.

"Just keep them safe. That's all we ask."

The officer nodded once.

They were led away—into the patrol boat.

Toward custody.

Toward trials.

Toward the unknown.

But Ji-eun's last words echoed in Min-jae's head.

*Find me. Find us.*

He looked at Dad. At Yumi.

They nodded—silent promise.

No matter the chains.

No matter the courts.

No matter the world.

They would find their family.

They would bring their son home.

To be continued…

The family is separated—Ji-eun and the newborn in medical custody, the others in police transport. Trials loom. Public outrage rages. But a single question burns: when the dust settles, will they ever be whole again—or will the system tear them apart forever?
