Chapter Two: A Far More Dangerous World
[A/N]: Before we start, I wanted to bring up the differing POVs last chapter and apologize for it. I was experimenting for something and, after careful consideration, have decided to stick to third person perspective for the story. Thank you. Enjoy.
[January 8th, 1996, Beacon Hills Memorial Hospital, Beacon Hills, CA]:
[General POV]:
Hazel was born to one Dr. Ayanna Hewitt and Dr. Cameron Howard Hewitt, as Mason Hewitt's older twin sister. Their parents were doctors — Their dad was an actual doctor — A physician with a specialty in Orthopedic Surgery — while Jules was therapist/psychologist with a PhD in psychology and sociology. — And yes, both. She's a genius.
Suffice to say, they were very well off financially speaking.
'At least, in this life, I won't have to worry about money,' Hazel thought, one day, being picked up by and passed between her mother and her mom's friends who were passing her and Mason around from one another alongside her peers, all of the women were mothers. A simple snoop in their minds told Hazel of the 3 mothers present, only 2 were supernatural; the third mother, though, hadn't even the faintest clue of the supernatural, was Mrs. Dunbar. 'Judging by her memories, she's still with Liam's dad at this point in time.'
As her brother babbled baby talk with baby Liam, Hazel was ever the more environmentally aware twin.
She knew that Mr. Dunbar was already showing signs of abusive behaviors towards his wife — The memories told her as much; drinking a lot more than usual, moments of aggressive gestures, threats made and in a few instances, even physical assaults were made to the woman, such as gripping her wrists aggressively, slaps across the face and even heavy pushes.
'I'll handle him, eventually,' Hazel thought, narrow-eyed as she observed Mason and Liam play with wooden blocks. 'But I'll have to do it in a way that doesn't affect canon too much.'
Turning her attention to the woman beside the oblivious woman, Hazel saw Lucy Talbot — Brett Talbot's mother. Possessing grey-blue eyes, brown choppy hair and a lean physique, Lucy Talbot was a stunning individual, dressed in a blue dress with yellow and green flowers dotting it and slippers.
'In the Original Timeline, she dies in a house fire. Fans of the show have always speculated if it was the Hale house fire, or not, but I don't really think much about it too much, as for the proper progression of the story, I'm not too certain I should change her fate,' Hazel thought privately. 'I may try to save them, but only Brett and Lori are my priority. And, should the house fire be the Hale fire in actuality, then I'll need to figure something out. The Hale fire itself will most definitely occur — Only, I won't let all the Hales die. That would be tragic. And wrong. And, honestly, kinda messed up.
'Anyways, speaking of Hales…'.
Hazel turned towards the final mother present, Talia Hale, alpha of the Hale Pack. Looking like a replica of Malia Coppola in person, dressed in black top and blue jeans, Talia Hale was both beautiful and confident, her vibe was powerful and her demeanor alert.
She was there with 1 year old Cora Hale and 7 year old Derek Hale.
'I'm not too certain if my granting Hewitts psionic abilities altered the original timeline or if this is merely another version of Teen Wolf,' Hazel thought as she watched the women talk to themselves about their experiences as parents, catching up as old friends and doing parent-y things as they passed the babies to and from one another. 'I'm pretty sure the Hewitts hadn't known the Hales before Season 5 in the show, but I suppose it doesn't really matter much. It just makes achieving my goals that much easier.'
"Your daughter is a quiet one, Ayanna," Lucy Talbot stated, as she squinted at Hazel, who had only just returned from her thoughts. She held Hazel up, closer to her face as if to observe the little baby better. "Her long periods of silence are… Well, a little jarring, especially considering…".
"Wahh!?" as if on cue, Mason cried out as Liam knocked over his pyramid of blocks.
Ayanna quickly scooped Mason into her arms, cuing the baby boy into calmness, all the while, Hazel tracked everyone's movement as silently as a hawk. "It is a a bit odd. Even when she wets herself or poos herself, which is already rarer than any baby's I've ever heard of,she doesn't cry out in distress. She just calmly alerts us and gestures to her rear.Cameron even suggested she might be an old soul reborn… Of course, I hit him upside the head with a boot at the audacity of the statement. I reckon he still has the bump as proof…But, yes, I must agree, it is peculiar how quiet my daughter can be."
'I can't even pierce into her mind — her innate talent in telepathy fiercely shields her mind from someone as powerful a psychic as I,' Ayanna thought to herself. 'Her mind reminds me of the geniuses of my ancestors — the ones written in the Hewitt Archives that depict the greatest psychics the world has ever known. When I have time, I should consult the Hewitt Archive to see if my daughter is really such a rare case, or if our lineage has anything on innate psychic shielding as a baby.'
Unbeknownst to Ayanna, Hazel had heard her thoughts, storing the information for later exploration. 'It's only been 3 months since my arrival to this world, and my telekinesis has yet to manifest; neither has my teleportation or precog, but, from what I've gleaned, my telepathy is definitely above average, thank goodness. I've even developed a technique that allows me to completely mask my psychic presence while reading other's minds. It was why I was able to casually enter an alpha werewolf's mind to listen on her thoughts.
'It's a shame none of my other abilities have manifested yet, but I am only 3 months old. Plus, with a mind as my current one, I can actually read the minds of everyone in my immediate vicinity for up to 7 houses away in every direction — And growing! I'm not seeing the downside.'
"She's a girl, you know Lucy," Jenna Dunbar laughed lightly. "We do mature faster than boys, or so the saying goes."
Hazel had to physically resist the urge to roll her eyes at the cheesy comment. 'If you're so mature, get away from that abusive bum you call a husband and take Liam with you.'
Of course, Hazel didn't say this, but her annoyance must've been translated to her face but as a yawn… To which, she actually did yawn. What? She was a baby! She was sleepy. Fuck off!
Talia chucked, her gaze soft, handing Hazel to her mother. "I think your baby wants to sleep, Ayanna."
And, as Ayanna put Hazel to bed and Hazel dosed off, she started dreaming of a certain hazel-eyed chimera, though the silver-eyed beta also payed a few visits in her dreams, too…
Time flew by like a windy breeze through the spring season, and Hazel grew up quite nicely… Or, relatively nicely, anyways.
As she grew, so too did her abilities, and it was through such abilities that she learned things.
First, this world — this Earth — was an alternate Teen Wolf universe that pretty much followed canon almost flawlessly. Only, it was much more layered and dangerous than the show revealed.
For starters, the shapeshifters of the world weren't just restricted to werewolves, werecoyotes, werejaguars, etc; there were other kinds of supernaturals too. Demons. Witches. Fae folk. Merfolk. Psychics.
All of which made up the supernatural community on Earth. It was a delicate but equalized balance — one that shielded the strong and made the weak victims.
As Hazel sat alone in the preserve, surrounded by a murder of crows and an unkindness of ravens — all of which had glowing blue-white eyes that matched Hazel's current eyes, she seemed deep in focus as the ravens and crows surrounded her in a cyclone of feathers, the wind rushing around her, fluffing up her hair.
Eventually, the 6 year old's eyes returned to their normal chocolate brown hue and the ravens and crows flew away with their caws.
"I'm 6 years old now," Hazel thought aloud. "My best friend is Cora Hale and my abilities have manifested — not all of them, but a good majority of them…"
Her telepathy alone would be on-par with Emma Frost (base-level), if she could quantify the comparison. She had the ability to project her consciousness into any animal — or normal human — without difficulty.
Her mind-control powers rivaled that of the Hewitt family head — At least, in intensity, anyway. For perspective, Ayanna was born from a lesser branch of the Hewitt family, and her telepathy was big town-level. The family head possessed the equivalent of large nation-level telepathy/mind control, multi-interstate-level teleportation and city-level telekinesis.
'My mind control/telepathy isn't yet national-level in terms of range, but the force of it — at least, in terms of willpower alone — is greater than even him. It has allowed me to shield my mind from him when he does his monthly national scans of supernatural minds that remain open and vulnerable to his observations,' Hazel thought. 'When it comes to information, that man is the most well-kept mind on the planet… At least, in the Americas, anyway?'
Picking up a textbook from the pile of textbooks beside her, Hazel's eyes turned briefly blue-white as she absorbed all of its information with a conscious touch.
It was one of the perks that came with Superior Insight — it allowed her to absorb knowledge and information with just a touch.
'So far, of my perks, only unrivaled willpower, superior insight and 5.6/10 luck factor has actually awakened in these last few years,' Hazel thought, looking at the rising sun. "Both penalties activated at the age of 5, when I learned teleportation and mind protection enough to be considered semi-town level threat. Now I can be called a threat capable of mind controlling 5 small towns or 3 large towns. I'm not quite at city level yet… Or, rather, I, technically am… At night, of course, when the debuff isn't active —- but, still, my mental defense is so strong that even national level psychics can't breach my mind if I don't want them to, so I'll call it a win.'
Since her birth, many psychics — both from the Hewitt family and from without — have tried to breach Hazel's mind. Some did it from a distance and failed; others tried to do it upon meeting her in-person — And still failed. Eventually, even the family head had tried twice, but failed.
It was because mind-reading required having superior willpower to one's target. And, even if one was a more powerful telepath, if a target had greater willpower, they'll always be resistant to said telepathic power.
'My 8/10 Mentality Strength is also active, but I sense it may not be an 8/10 Mentality Strength by normal mortal calculations. I have yet to access my Great Internal Mental Library, as it's still inaccessible, but I sense if I keep absorbing knowledge as I have been for the past year, I'll eventually gain access to it,' Hazel thought to herself. 'Physicality Amplifier and Spirit Anima Transformation both are still inaccessible, though a passive effect from what I can only guess is my Spirit Anima Transformation — Spirit Sight — is active and has allowed me to see the true form of those around me, most especially the spirit-based supernaturals.
'I'm waiting until my 10th birthday to stack my power bestowal abilities to more than double what they are now. Right now, I've only used it once to bestow the Hewitt bloodline with psychic power. I've got 2 more bloodline power bestowals and 5 more individual power bestowals. When I turn 10, I'll have 5 bloodline bestowals and 10 individual bestowals. That's when the epitome of my plans will begin to kick off into motion.'
Deciding to teleport to her room, Hazel felt the sun rays shining through her dark curtains and immediately felt incredibly weak.
"Good thing I am homeschooled because of my aversion to sunlight," Hazel thought aloud, noticing her dark room beside the open curtains. "Otherwise, that would be an inconvenience to explain my weakness to natural light."
'I was never much of a social butterfly, anyway.
'In this — and of the last — life, Mason is more than enough social for the both of us. We're both geniuses, in our own ways — Only, his is much more of a natural one. He's still so nice and kind to everyone; he is too good for everyone, me and his best friend Liam included, but I love my brother all the same… It's hard to even equate us as twins. I'm not a nice person. We are polar opposites. And yet, in the end, I wonder if that is why… I've got to prevent him from becoming the Beast…,' Hazel thought, frowning briefly, her plans written in her eyelids. Shaking her head, she steeled her resolve.
"If there is one thing about this world that I've noticed, it is that it is more dangerous than the show depicted. Chances are, key bad guys will be far more deadly than the show expressed,
Hazel verbalized. "Void Stiles. La Bete. The Ghost RIders. They'll definitely be more powerful here than in the show…I'll just have to be stronger."
And, it was it was with that thought, that Hazel Hewitt decided to dose off, though her dreams were anything but peaceful…
