Chapter 12 - Solo Assignment

A/N: I hate all WebNovel Readers!

~ Narrator POV ~

"Hey, rookie. Curses are here." Maki called out as she finally took out the weapon she had concealed in her sack, it was a naginata!

Seiji, seeing that the curtain was down and there were curses in front of him, discarded all other thoughts completely focusing on the curses. He finally unsheathed Rivers of Blood katana and Maki, out of the corner of her eyes, saw its appearance. Her interest in the blade continues to grow.

"Stand back, I'll handle these ones." Maki said and she was about to rush when Seiji beat her to it. She had to suppress her surprise when she saw the speed at which he ran.

"I can handle myself." He said as he rushed the curses.

At first she thought he was already using Cursed energy reinforcement but soon discarded the thought. Even if he was a prodigy he wouldn't be able to use cursed reinforcement, well unless you were Gojo.

She shook her head of those thoughts and rushed after Seiji.

Seiji had already activated Observation Haki when he was rushing towards the curses, he didn't want to get ambushed from behind while focusing on one curse.

The curse he rushed swung at him, already anticipating where Seiji was gonna be, Seiji slid under the strike while simultaneously cutting the leg off. Before the curse could even register what had happened and try to heal, Seiji quickly stood up and sliced his head off.

"That's one curse down." Seiji muttered looking at the dispersing curse beneath him.

"Idiot, look out behind you!" Maki yelled from her position of fighting the other two curses.

Seiji knew that he didn't have to be told with Observation haki active. Seiji leaped back letting the curse strike at the spot he had just previously been. It was at this moment that Seiji thought it was a perfect time to experiment and use his cursed technique.

So while dodging hits from the cursed spirit Seiji was trying to gather his cursed energy and use his CT, he was splitting his thinking. His eyes locked with the curse and he began to want to do what he had done all those years ago, he wanted to "flip" the world.

Just as his cursed energy spiked, the blade of a naginata emerged from the backside of the curse, ending its life.

"Hey, stop playing around with these things. One slip and you're dead." Maki said she looked irritated as usual but this time there was a clear warning in her voice.

Seiji was a little frustrated, he felt as if something was about to happen before Maki came and ended the fight. But he soon calmed down, there would be another opportunity to use his technique and this time…

As they were making their way up to the upper floors of the Hospital, Seiji couldn't help but notice that the curses weren't coming out, almost as if they were in hiding. 'Is it because of Ai?' He thought.

Maki too, had noticed this and she thought the same and assumed that like Yuta Seiji and his vengeful spirit were the reasons he curses weren't coming out.

There was an awkward silence between the two, with Maki not wanting to socialize and Seiji not really wanting to force a conversation, he was focusing on trying to reinforce but found it difficult to reinforce his entire body.

~ Seiji POV ~

As the two of us were walking in silence I began to reinforce myself with cursed energy, all I could manage was reinforcing my hands. I watched as cursed energy surged around my hands.

'Manifesting cursed energy is the easy part, controlling it is where it gets tricky. Cursed energy is volatile in its nature, hard to control and it's not as easy as gaining control over your emotions…as impossible as that is.' I thought.

"Hey." Maki called out, catching my attention and interrupting my mini cursed energy control training.

"Yeah?"

We were at the steps about to head to the last floor of the hospital when she stopped and looked back at me, "Your grade, what grade are you?" She asked suddenly.

I knew what she meant and what she was asking, but at this time I shouldn't know what sorcerer ranks are. So I just put on a confused face and asked "Grade? Now that I think about it, this isn't the first time you talked about grades. What is that?"

Maki made a sound and muttered something under her breath before she broke into an explanation, "We sorcerers classify our strength through grades. There's grades 4-1, though there is a grade above Grade 1 we call them special grade sorcerers and those are rare." She paused, probably seeing if I had any questions, and I didn't, she continued.

"We also classify cursed spirits by those grades as well, the ones we ran into at the entrance of the hospital were grade 3's. The two that are our priority are grade twos, so they shouldn't be that much of a problem for us." She finished.

And while I already knew all of this I just nodded my head as if I understood, "Then how am I supposed to know my Grade?" I asked and she paused before looking back at me.

"Gojo should've gotten you your school I.D when you enrolled into the school." She said in her usual annoyed tone, it only got worse when she saw me shake my head.

"I didn't get anything from him… though my enrollment was abrupt, after all I had just found my girlfriend dead by a parasocial fan and the next thing I know, I was in that room with Gojo telling me about my circumstances." I explained and Maki looked even more aggrieved than before.

"That Blindfolded dumbass…" she began to grumble and complain about Gojo.

"!!!"

When we made it to the last floor, I immediately felt the presence of something in the two hospital rooms across from eachother…and we were right in between the rooms.

They were about to attack simultaneously and if they hit then we would no doubt be injured, so I immediately reached out and tugged on my cursed energy and this time without Maki to interrupt, the world flipped.

I felt Myself and Maki who were previously standing upright to now be falling to the end of the hallway as if we were falling through the air. And the previous space we were in was squished between two metal hospital doors.

"Huh?" I heard Maki say before we smashed into the wall at the end of the hallway.

~ Narrator POV ~

It all happened so fast for Maki, one moment she was complaining about Gojo, or as she non-affectionately call blindfolded dumbass, then she was falling through the air to the end of the hall whereas they were previously standing upright in said hall, then the space she and Seiji occupied were squashed between two hospital doors.

And now she found herself being groped…

Seeing they were about to hit the wall, Seiji unconsciously grabbed Maki and shielded her from the impact. With his slightly more durable body he was mostly fine but during the impact his hand slipped up and he was now grabbing a handful of Maki's breasts.

"You wanna move your hand before you lose it?" Maki said, her voice eerily calm.

"Ah, my bad." Seiji immediately moved his hand and the both of them stood up…on a wall… like it was the ground. The curses were struggling to leave the hospital rooms due to their size, but one was halfway put and the other was hanging on the door frame trying not to fall.

Maki's attention though was on a whole nother thing. 'What the hell just happened.' She looked down at the wall they were casually standing on.

'Was this the cursed spirits doing? No, looking at them they seem to be as confused as I am. So that means this…' she looked at Seiji next to her as he was smiling excitedly. 'This was his doing… This is his cursed technique!'

One cursed spirit was almost out of the room while the other still struggled to get out, any second now the cursed spirit would fall on top of them, "Zenin, I'm gonna reverse the gravity so get ready." Seiji said.

"It's Maki, Don't call me Zenin." She said while picking up her naginata. And once again she began falling through the air towards the opposite side of the hall, where the curse had finally managed to break through the door.

Seiji reinforced his feet with cursed energy and began running down the wall at extreme speeds, he had forgoed reinforcing his fist or blade with cursed energy as Rivers of Blood had its own cursed energy running through it.

'Time for some aura farming!' Seiji thought as he slid along the wall holding the Iai stance with rivers waiting for the perfect time to strike.

'Now!' As the cursed went for a swing Seiji struck, its arm was sent flying through the air then hopped off the wall and with his feet still reinforced using the momentum of the drop kicked the cursed through the wall sending it outside the hospital.

"Your turn, Maki!" He flipped and from the dust Maki flew under him twirling her naginata then once she got close enough, pierced through the curse causing an explosion of purple blood.

Gravity shifted back to normal and instead of continuing to fly through the air they landed on the flat grass.

Seiji looked back at the disappearing corpse of the curse and whistled, before realizing what he had just done… "Holy shit…I JUST SHIFTED GRAVITY, HAHA!" He laughed excitedly.

"So that's what that was." Maki said looking at the hole they just came out of. Just then she froze, a sudden pressure filled the air.

Half the body of the second curse burst through the wall, "Is it me or did that thing get bigger, and the curse's energy it's radiating…it's different." Seiji asked, staring at the curse in bewilderment.

"The curse definitely got bigger and stronger, in fact that curse is now a special grade." Gojo suddenly appeared behind the two of them, surprising both Maki and Seiji for two reasons.

One the fact that Gojo just appeared behind them, and two the curse is now a special grade.

"What? How!?" Maki asked, still a bit shaken by the sheer pressure the curse was radiating.

Seiji though already had a pretty good idea as to why the grade 2 curse suddenly became stronger. Sukuna's finger!

"To think that would end up here of all places." Gojo said casually, not bothering to elaborate on what he was talking about. He still had that relaxed smile on his face despite the suffocating cursed energy the curse was now giving off.

Seiji too felt the pressure but it was less than that of Maki, he was about to summon Ai but was stopped by Gojo who stepped forward, "Alright my precious students let your sensei handle this!~" He said in his usual goofy way, but there was an underlying tone that it wasn't up for discussion.

Before Seiji could say anything Maki grabbed Seiji by the back of his collar and began dragging him towards the car.

Seiji was dissatisfied by this, he wanted to explore his Cursed technique more, he wanted to see what Ai was capable of but deep down he knew as much as he wanted to experiment, a cursed spirit empowered by sukuna's finger was maybe too much for him.

Maki too was dissatisfied, not by the fact that she couldn't fight the cursed spirit but she was dissatisfied about herself. She froze, in front of a rookie no less. A sense of shame and anger washed over her then she made a bow to herself, she will never freeze ever again.

She clenched her naginata as she made this vow to herself.

~ Seiji POV ~

It didn't even take 20 seconds before Gojo was done and joined us in the car. He treated the situation no different from before we went on the assignment, he kept talking about sweets and annoying Maki as usual.

When we got back to Jujutsu High Gojo disappeared somewhere, I didn't know nor did I really care all that much and Maki went to her dorm as quiet as always but there was a different vibe about her.

'Maybe the curse shook her up?' I thought looking at her back, then unconsciously wandered down a little…directly at her butt. I shook my head of those thoughts. I didn't have time to think about her nice ass right now!

What I needed to focus on was growing stronger which meant getting a better understanding of my cursed technique and seeing what Ai can do.

~ Timeskip: 3 months ~

It's been 3 months since I was kidnapped by Gojo. It was a week after my first assignment that I was officially enrolled as a student at Tokyo Jujutsu High, and in these past three months I figured out a lot about my fellow classmates, Ai, and most importantly my cursed technique.

[A/N: By the way, his school outfit is the same as Gojo's when he was a student.]

Firstly my cursed technique, it was in one word, chaos. In those 3 months of experimenting with my cursed technique, I learned that it allowed me to manipulate environmental, physical, and elemental forces to create disorder.

It was incredibly versatile, Panda and the others said it was like I had multiple techniques rolled up into one capable of turning the world sideways, freezing vast amounts of water in an instant, and even growing immense plant life.

Though there were the cons and that was the mental calculation that came with handling the technique. Gojo speculated that either the first two times I used my technique was based on luck or I unconsciously did mental calculations when using the technique, he assumed the former.

And while it was incredibly versatile it didn't have the destructive capabilities of other techniques like Limitless, Shrine, and Cursed spirit manipulation.

Though I didn't have to bother much about that due to Ai. It seemed that Ai had a cursed technique as well.

Ai's cursed technique, Magatsumi, manifested as a katana. Her technique much like mine had many different applications to it, though so far I had only trained in using 3 applications of it.

First was the field of flowers, this activated upon summoning the sword. Cursed energy is gathered in the form of flowers and assorted arthropods, like butterflies and centipedes.

The flower fields summoned by Magatsumi are dangerously lethal. If a person or cursed spirit makes prolonged contact with the flower field, flowers and branches begin to grow out of their skin and mouth, killing them from the inside out as the flower slowly drains their cursed energy and vitality.

Vitality and cursed energy absorption, it was a passive effect of the blade, anyone cut by Magatsumi had bits of their cursed energy and vitality absorbed into the blade and given to the user, being Ai or me.

Then there were the extension techniques Magatsumi has which oddly enough were based off of all the arthropods and insects that you could find in the flower fields.

First was, spider. Magatsumi paints a cobweb-like pattern on the ground surrounded by four groups of four spider-like eyes. Anyone caught in the web is stuck and cannot move.

Then there was, dragonfly. Magatsumi forms several dragonfly-wings shapes around the blade before blasting an invisible force in the indicated direction. On contact, the force ruptures and greatly damages the enemies hit.

That was all I could learn about Ai's cursed technique in the past three months. Between training and doing research on my own cursed technique, being sent on assignments, and getting along with the others, I couldn't get more information on her technique.

And speaking of getting along with the others…

I looked beside me discreetly at none other than Maki Zenin. Ever since that assignment Maki has been dragging me to the training ground every morning right as the sun starts to rise to spar with her.

We'd spar from early morning to mid day, almost every single day of the week. It had gotten so bad that I had practically begged her to give me some days of the week off to train my cursed technique.

Reluctantly she agreed, but with the promise that on the days we do spar we wake up even earlier to spar with her, today was one of those days.

Maki suddenly stood up, "Breaks over, you ready?" She grabbed her wooden training staff.

I couldn't help but groan, "Ugh, no."

"Good." She walked off to the center of the field, and despite my groan and silent complaints I got up anyway and walked to where she stood already in her stance ready for the spar.

As we both got in our stance we rushed each other, as I neared her I went for a quick draw which she blocked. I had expected that and she twirled her staff going for an overhead strike on my shoulder, I blocked and the clanks of wooden weapons whacking against each other filled the training ground.

I couldn't help but think about how close two of us had gotten in the three months after that assignment, out of the four of them, Maki had to be the person I was closest with.

She didn't speak much about her background, I knew all of that already, not that she knew that but the reason I say im closer to her than the others is because of these spars.

'Its like they say how warriors can connect with each other when they cross blades or something like that…or at least I think that's how that saying goes…' Me going into my thoughts caused me the match as I felt a heavy blow land on my abdomen.

"Why the hell were you not paying attention during that fight, are you looking down on me?!" Oh no, she was angry, so angry that she was pointing the end of her staff in my face and it only got closer with every word she said.

I scratched the back of my head sheepishly while chuckling nervously, "Hehe, nah. I was thinking about something."

Maki stared at me for a moment before finally relenting and removing the butt of the staff from in front of my face, "what were you thinking about?" She asked while sitting beside me.

"My progression." I say and she looks at me with the raised eyebrow expression.

"Your progression?"

I nodded, "Mhm. I was wondering just how my progression as a jujutsu sorcerer is, if it was good, bad, or middle of the road." I told her.

Maki was quiet for a moment before she spoke up, "I don't know why you're so worried over your progress on being a jujutsu sorcere…but I can say with certainty that your a prodigy. At least when it comes to Jujutsu or hand to hand combat, you'll have to ask the blindfolded idiot that, if you want a straight answer."

I nodded and smiled, "Then can I leave sparring early to train my cursed technique?" I asked her hopefully.

"No, now get up and no more distractions, got it?" She said before standing up.

"Ugh, yes ma'am." I groaned again but still stood up anyway.

~ Narrator POV ~

"I'm sorry, you want me to do what?" Seiji asked incredulously. Seiji had just been in his room recuperating from the 8 hours long spar he had just finished with Maki when Gojo popped up out of nowhere informing him of his first solo mission.

Usually Seiji would've been excited to try out his more refined cursed technique against cursed spirits but the timing was too odd, because not too long ago Toge was assigned to exorcise a curse and Yuta was made to tag along.

This was the very mission that started it all in JJK 0.

There was also the fact that much like Yuta the higher ups wanted Seiji executed but couldn't due to him being under Gojo's protection. So in Seiji's mind this all felt way too coincidental.

"You got your very first, very own solo assignment! Yippee~!" Gojo said again excitedly.

"Wait a minute, don't you find this odd? Why now? I've only been a sorcerer for 3 months and they already want to send me on a solo assignment? Are you gonna be with me?" Seiji expressed his thoughts and concerns about the assignment.

Gojo waved his hand dismissively, "It's fine, it's fine. I believe you can handle whatever they throw at you, after all you're plenty strong yourself." He said and that made all the thoughts and concerns in Seiji's mind pause.

Gojo continued, "I have to say your progress in Jujutsu sorcery even shocked me a bit, your talent is no less than mine." That stun locked Seiji for a moment but then in typical Gojo fashion of course had to ruin the moment.

"Though I'll still always be stronger~." He said teasingly.

Seiji's eyebrow twitched, "Screw off!" He said, causing Gojo to laugh.

"Fine, I'll do it. Where's the curse I need to exorcise?" Seiji asked, and although there was a bit of apprehensiveness from the sudden solo mission he couldn't help but feel that bubble of excitement build up.

Gojo, seeing this smiled, "It's…"

Chapter End.

Alright the voting results are over and for the fic I've decided to upload alongside this one is...

With the Six Eyes in Frieren!

I know many of you wanted the TxD fic but I'm not even gonna lie, there's just no motivation to write it, though chapter one of the fic is about 80% done. Maybe the motivation will hit someday probably soon tbh.

However now I have the urge to write a non-Chinese translated Frieren fic because of all the edits and clips I'm getting on tiktok.

Also I hate Webnovel readers let that be widely known!
