"Acted on their own?"
The second Hiruzen heard those words, one name slammed into his mind.
Shimura Danzo.
In the entire Leaf, the person most likely to go rogue and make decisions without orders was Danzo. Same generation as Hiruzen, both students of the Second Hokage. Old, arrogant, and always sticking his nose where it didn't belong—lecturing the Hokage like he was still in charge.
Hiruzen had scolded him countless times. Danzo never changed. He always had the same line ready: "Hiruzen, you'll regret this one day."
And yet Hiruzen's decisions had mostly been right. Danzo's "independent actions" kept causing disasters that Hiruzen had to clean up. If the Shimura clan weren't such a powerful family, and if Hiruzen didn't still feel some old loyalty, Danzo would've been stripped of his elder seat years ago.
"Could it really be Danzo again?"
Hiruzen's face darkened. Kakashi's disappearance was already a disaster. The plan to use Kakashi to publicly crush the White Fang rumors was dead before it even started.
...
...
"Where the hell am I?"
Kakashi woke up to pain everywhere. Every inch of his body hurt. The room was completely unfamiliar. Rain tapped steadily against the window, filling the air with a damp, earthy smell.
Memories flooded back.
He'd been on the battlefield when he heard the Sand ninja shouting that rumor—that his father's death had been a setup. Hiruzen had feared Sakumo's growing reputation and deliberately handed him an impossible mission. No matter what choice his father made, he was finished. Take the mission and face massive pressure from the client. Choose his comrades and become the guy who abandoned his team. Either way, the Hokage seat was gone forever.
Kakashi hadn't believed it. He knew Hiruzen wasn't that kind of man. He wanted to wait and see what happened next.
Then two Leaf ANBU showed up and said they were taking him back to the village. That should've been normal. Kakashi even wanted to talk to Hiruzen face-to-face. But those ANBU weren't real ANBU. They led him away from the rest of the Leaf forces. The moment he realized something was wrong, they attacked—hard, fast, aiming straight for his vital points.
"That Wind Style… no mistake. Only Danzo—Shimura Danzo—can use it like that. No one else."
Wind Style was common across the ninja world, but the techniques varied by village. Sand specialized in sickle-weasel variants, wind nets, and wind blades mixed with sand. Mist, Rock, and Cloud had a few, but mostly basic stuff like Gale Palm or Typhoon. Vacuum Jade, Vacuum Wave, Vacuum Blade, Wind Style Shuriken—only the Shimura clan used the full set. And only Danzo had the raw power to overwhelm Kakashi that badly.
"Did Hiruzen order Danzo to kill me?"
"Or did Danzo know something and act on his own?"
Kakashi let out a bitter laugh.
"Either way, it means there really was something wrong with my father's death. That's why they want me gone. They're scared I'll find out the truth and come for revenge."
"Hokage-sama… I trusted you so much."
The door creaked open. A girl stepped inside, saw Kakashi awake, and her face lit up with relief.
"Thank god, you're finally awake!"
She hurried over.
"Drink the medicine while it's warm."
Kakashi stared at her, completely lost. He had no idea where he was or who she was. All he knew was that someone had saved him. Otherwise he'd be dead—Danzo didn't leave survivors.
The girl held out a bowl of dark, bitter-smelling soup. Medicine always tasted awful. Effectiveness mattered more than flavor.
"This will help your wounds heal."
She picked up the spoon and leaned in to feed him.
Kakashi froze.
Normally he'd refuse food from a stranger. But nothing about this situation was normal. He'd just escaped Danzo by the skin of his teeth. Whoever saved him probably wasn't planning to poison him now. And with his body this wrecked, he didn't have many options.
"I'll do it myself."
It was the last shred of pride he could hold onto.
"You sure?"
"Yeah. I got it."
"Alright…"
She looked almost disappointed. Kakashi took the bowl quickly. One sip and his whole face twisted. The girl stood there watching him drink, cheeks slowly turning pink.
Kakashi noticed. He glanced up.
"What's wrong?"
She snapped out of it.
"Oh—almost forgot! Now that you're awake I need to tell Lady Konan right away."
She turned and hurried out the door.
"Lady Konan?"
Kakashi frowned. He'd never heard that name before.
He'd assumed Sand Village had saved him. Their relationship with the Leaf was already trash, Danzo had tried to kill him, and Sand didn't mind taking in outsiders. Those Uchiha members were doing fine there. Even Kisame Hoshigaki had climbed the ranks. At first Kakashi thought Sand was just pushing the Minato murder rumors and the Will of Fire debate in the Weekly for clicks. But now… maybe Rasa actually cared about Minato after all. Otherwise why pick a fight with the Leaf when they could've just ambushed them instead?
"Sand Village doesn't have anyone named Konan that I know of."
A few minutes later the door opened again.
A woman walked in wearing the red-cloud black cloak. Long purple hair tied back. Cool, distant aura—until you noticed the lip piercing and amber nail polish. She looked straight at him.
"Kakashi. Hello."
