Chapter 67 - Chapter 67: The Ink of the Abscissa

The grand administrative hall of the Middle Tier looked less like a clan office and more like a high-altitude slaughterhouse for data.

Beneath a vaulted ceiling of ribbed iron and soot-stained stained glass, fifty massive Clockwork Ledgers sat in parallel rows. These were fifteen-foot towers of interlocking brass gears and mechanical ticker-tapes, constantly clicking, whirring, and spitting out thin strips of parchment. The paper didn't record names; it tracked the volumetric displacement of Diesel-Qi from every tenement, forge, and cradle in the lower sectors.

In the center of the hall, surrounded by a ring of weeping clerks, stood a heavy bronze pedestal holding the Grand Abscissa—the master directory of the Lin Clan's entire human leasehold.

"Who authorized this drop in system pressure?" a sharp, nasal voice barked from the high gallery overlooking the ledgers.

An elderly man in an immaculate silver coat, his hair braided with fine copper wire that connected to an artificial brass larynx at his throat, leaned over the iron railing. It was Elder Lin Mo, the Chief Auditor of the Middle Tier, a 4-Star "Graphite-Soul" who had spent forty years translating human marrow into tax yields for the Imperial Coal Cartel.

His brass larynx let out a series of clicking, rhythmic whines as his data-lenses focused on Lin Wei. "The Third Discard? Where are the Black-Vane guards? Why has the Sector 3 fuel-main flatlined?"

Lin Wei walked down the central aisle between the clicking towers of brass. His charcoal-violet blade dragged along the limestone floor, leaving a white path of deep, crystallization frost that caused the automated steam-carts to swerve, their small rubber tires losing traction and crashing into the desks.

"The guards are staying downstairs, Elder," Lin Wei said. The sound did not come from his lips; it vibrated out of the slate-crystal plates covering his throat, a low, tectonic grind that caused the glass inkwells on the clerks' desks to crack.

"Rebellion!" Lin Mo hissed, his copper-braided hair bristling as he tapped an alarm plunger on the gallery railing. "The boy's core has gone rogue! Clear the ledgers! Initiate the Asset Liquidation Sequence!"

The towers of brass gears suddenly shifted their frequencies. The steady, rhythmic click-click-click turned into a frantic, high-pitched scream of grinding teeth. The thin strips of parchment spitting out of the machines turned from white to a dull, chemical black.

[System Warning: The Graph-Engines are initiating a 'Forced Extraction'.]

[Target: 12,000 Branch Disciples in the low-tier workshops.]

[Mechanism: The machines are increasing the vacuum pressure in the return lines to 100% capacity to drain all remaining Diesel-Qi before the sector is decoupled.]

"They're killing them," Xiao Mei gasped, running to the nearest ledger-tower, her handmade iron poker useless against the massive, churning wall of brass gears. "Third Young Master, the needle valves are opening in the tenements! The children... they won't survive the vacuum!"

Lin Wei stopped in front of the bronze pedestal of the Grand Abscissa. The master book was not paper; it was a three-foot slab of polished graphite, its surface etched with silver-lead lines that glowed with a dull, siphoned light.

"System," Lin Wei thought, his violet left eye pulsing with a cold, absolute darkness that began to drink the orange firelight of the hall. "The local limit is 12,000 Kilopascals. Can I ground a mechanical algorithm?"

[Sovereign Engine: Analyzing Ticker-Network...]

[The Graph-Engines are driven by an 'Imperial Differential Core' beneath the floor.]

[Option Found: 'The Sovereign Audit' — Cost: 9,000 Points.]

[Effect: Overwrites the mathematical parameters of the gear-train, turning the calculation of 'Debt' into an absolute zero value.]

"Apply the deduction," Lin Wei commanded.

[Points Expended: 9,000.]

[Current Balance: 949,500.]

[Local Reality Stress: 42%. The Engine is drawing from the marrow.]

Lin Wei lifted his slate-iron right arm—the heavy, unmoving pillar of crystal mineral—and dropped it onto the face of the graphite Grand Abscissa.

The impact was entirely silent.

The silver-lead lines on the graphite slab didn't blink; they turned a deep, bruised purple before dissolving into black dust. The 9,000 points didn't break the bronze pedestal—they traveled through the copper wires beneath the floorboards like a flash-freeze hitting a water pipe.

The fifty towering clockwork ledgers stopped instantly.

The frantic shriek of the brass gears died mid-stroke. The teeth of the gears didn't shatter; they simply fused, the brass turning into a brittle, gray mineral that looked exactly like the slate-crystal on Lin Wei's shoulder. The strips of black parchment stopped scrolling, turning to gray ash that drifted through the cold air of the hall.

"My... my ledger-grid," Elder Lin Mo stammered, his brass larynx letting out a high-pitched, broken whistle as his data-lenses shattered inside their frames. "The calculations... they've been set to zero. The Cartel's tax line... It's been deleted."

Lin Wei looked up at the high gallery, his right lung perfectly silent inside his rigid ribcage, his left eye holding the ancient, unfeeling law of the Sentinel.

"The Lin Clan doesn't owe the Cartel another ounce," Lin Wei said, his stone fingers lifting from the ruined Abscissa. He turned his head slightly toward the high stairs leading to the Upper Tier—the place where his brother Hao sat on a throne of polished steam-turbines.

"Xiao Mei," he rumbled.

"Yes, Master?" the girl said, her breath catching as she saw the gray stone texture now reaching all the way down Lin Wei's chest, his human heart the only thing left pulsing beneath the crystal.

"Keep the charcoal pens," Lin Wei said, his voice dropping into the quiet, terrifying stillness of the North. "We're going to open the high accounts."
