Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The Body That Waits

Chapter 17: The Body That Waits

The hidden valley had entered autumn.

Golden leaves drifted lazily through the air, carpeting the forest floor.

The morning breeze was cool, carrying with it the scent of ripe fruits and damp earth.

Kieran sat beneath the ancient oak, his breathing calm and rhythmic.

Months had passed since he first began learning to sense Magna.

Every day, the colorful motes of Magna gathered around him.

Every day, they left without entering his body.

Crystal watched from a distance.

Most people would have become frustrated.

Kieran never did.

To him, each meditation was simply another chance to greet his colorful friends.

---

That afternoon, Crystal called him to the training platform.

"Kieran."

"Yes, Mama."

She placed a small crystal sphere before him.

It was perfectly transparent.

"This is a Magna Resonance Crystal."

"It doesn't measure strength."

"It measures harmony."

Kieran looked at it curiously.

"What do I do?"

"Place your hand on it."

He obeyed.

For a few moments...

Nothing happened.

Then...

The crystal glowed.

Soft green.

Moments later, blue joined it.

Then red.

Brown.

White.

Silver.

Golden.

Purple.

One color after another illuminated the crystal until it resembled a tiny rainbow.

Crystal's expression stiffened.

"...Again."

Kieran removed his hand before placing it back on the crystal.

The same result.

Every element responded.

None dominated the others.

Then...

Without warning...

The lights disappeared.

The crystal returned to complete transparency.

A soft cracking sound echoed.

Crack...

A thin fracture appeared across its surface.

Then another.

Crystal immediately picked it up.

She examined it carefully before letting out a slow breath.

"It couldn't withstand you..."

Kieran's eyes widened.

"Did I break it?"

Crystal smiled reassuringly.

"No."

"It simply reached its limit."

Although...

She knew that wasn't the whole truth.

---

That evening...

Kael visited once again.

The massive black tiger lay comfortably beneath the oak tree while Kieran brushed his thick fur.

"I still don't understand why I let you do this."

Kieran laughed.

"Because you like it."

"...I tolerate it."

Crystal walked over carrying the cracked crystal.

She showed it to Kael.

The Beast Lord's golden eyes narrowed.

"...Interesting."

"You've seen this before?"

Crystal asked.

Kael slowly shook his head.

"No."

"But..."

"I've heard stories."

"What kind of stories?"

"My grandmother once spoke of beings who were not rejected by any element."

Crystal remained silent.

Kael continued.

"She said the world itself refused to define them."

"But..."

He shrugged.

"I always thought they were fairy tales."

Crystal looked down at the cracked crystal.

"So did I."

---

The following morning...

Crystal finally decided it was time.

She led Kieran to the deepest part of the valley.

There...

Hidden beneath a cliff...

Was a small cave.

Unlike their home, this cave radiated an ancient atmosphere.

Runes were carved into every wall.

The air itself felt heavier.

Kieran instinctively lowered his voice.

"This place..."

"It feels old."

Crystal nodded.

"It is."

She walked to the center of the chamber.

"This cave existed long before I found the valley."

"I merely repaired it."

Kieran's eyes widened.

"Who made it?"

"I don't know."

"Not everything in Gaia has an answer."

---

At the center of the chamber stood a circular stone platform.

Countless runes were engraved across its surface.

Crystal motioned for Kieran to sit.

"This formation gathers ambient Magna."

"It won't force it into your body."

"It merely makes the surrounding Magna clearer."

Kieran sat cross-legged.

Crystal activated the formation with a gentle touch.

The runes glowed a soft emerald green.

The cave immediately filled with countless motes of Magna.

Far denser than anything Kieran had ever seen.

Yet...

Just like before...

None entered him.

Instead...

They surrounded him in slow circles.

Like old friends welcoming someone home.

---

Crystal watched quietly.

Then...

Something impossible happened.

The runes beneath Kieran began glowing one after another.

Not because of Crystal.

Not because of the formation.

Because the surrounding Magna was reacting.

The emerald runes...

Turned gold.

The golden light spread across the entire platform.

The cave trembled softly.

A warm, ancient aura filled the chamber.

Crystal's pupils shrank.

"...Impossible."

Those runes...

Had not responded to anyone for centuries.

Yet now...

They awakened on their own.

As suddenly as it began...

Everything became quiet once more.

The golden light vanished.

The runes returned to normal.

Kieran slowly opened his eyes.

"Mama?"

Crystal remained frozen.

"...Did you hear anything?"

He thought for several moments.

"I don't know."

"I think..."

"I heard someone laughing."

Crystal immediately looked around the empty chamber.

There was no one.

No presence.

No trace of another being.

Only silence.

She slowly looked back at Kieran.

"What did the voice say?"

Kieran smiled innocently.

"It didn't."

"It just sounded..."

"...happy."

Crystal lowered her gaze to the ancient runes beneath his feet.

For the first time in many years...

A feeling she rarely experienced settled in her heart.

Uncertainty.

This child...

Was unraveling mysteries that predated even her lifetime.

Outside the cave, unnoticed by either of them, the ancient valley seemed just a little brighter—as if somewhere deep beneath the earth, something long asleep had stirred ever so slightly.
