Chapter 23 - Meeting The Detective

It took over thirty minutes during the lunch hour traffic for Nita and the Tuskar brothers to reach the Police Headquarters.

The detectives working on Detrim Valken's case were situated in this location, so the three cousins had made their way over here after leaving the accident site.

Nita glanced at the huge building and then at the busy entrance where police officials and ordinary citizens kept entering and exiting every few seconds.

"You two can go ahead. I'll join you after I park my car." Rowan suggested, since this place did not have valet parking and he would have to do so himself.

Jodie had been to the Police Headquarters a few times in the last few days and he knew his way around the place.

Therefore, Rowan did not have to worry about leaving Nita alone in an unfamiliar place, as Jodie would be accompanying her until he returned after parking his car.

Not wanting any conflict at this point, especially after figuring out that Nita had some talent with tracking, Jodie nodded his head and got out of the car, waiting on the sidewalk for his cousin to do the same.

Nita did not wish to waste any time, and hence, she too got out of the car and gestured to Jodie to lead the way.

He did not have to be told twice, as Jodie began walking ahead while Nita kept a distance of a few feet and followed him into this huge building.

Her eyes, now once again hidden behind those oversized sunglasses, scanned her surroundings as she walked through the entrance of the building.

Along the way, she came across cops dragging along semiconscious drunks, shifty-eyed men worried about the place they were in, and a few lawyers who had come to discuss the next steps with their clients.

These sights were common in such a place and failed to attract too much of Nita's attention as she simply swept her gaze past them as she moved along the corridors.

The two soon entered an elevator which halted at the sixth floor.

"That's the detective handling Brother Detrim's case." Jodie whispered the moment they stepped out of the elevator, signaling toward a man sitting at a desk, at the very end of the huge office space they had just entered.

Taking her sunglasses off, Nita's reddish-pink eyes narrowed in the direction Jodie had pointed at with his chin.

There she found a man dressed in a pale gray suit with dirty blonde hair, staring down at the files on his desk.

The two cousins began walking in his direction and succeeded in gaining his attention when they came to a halt at his desk.

"Oh, hello Mr. Tuskar!" A vibrantly chirpy voice came from the man at the desk who shot them a bright smile upon noticing their presence.

He hurriedly stood and shook hands with Jodie, who accepted it with a polite smile.

Nita and Jodie were standing next to each other so his gaze soon shifted toward her and he paused, trying to search his memories for any information he had about her.

While he was hoping to recall if he had met her in the past, Nita was scanning the detective working on her brother's case.

Earlier, he had been seated at his desk, but now that he stood before her, Nita realized just how tall this man was.

Nita and Jodie were both tall, but this man, he was gigantic in stature.

He appeared to be close to six feet seven inches in height and his broad shoulders, which straightened out when he stood, only revealed that he was well-built and muscular.

"Ahem!" A cough from behind broke the silence and the three individuals turned in the direction of the sound.

"Sorry, I'm late!" Rowan announced his arrival and stepped closer to the three, shaking hands with the detective.

"This is Anita Valken, she is Detrim's younger sister." He introduced the detective to the newcomer, who finally nodded his head as he had been unable to place her in his memories.

"Detective Sam Mulligan," The tall man also introduced himself before stretching his hand out toward the young lady before him.

Nita stared at the hand before her and only after a second's pause, she stretched her hand too, giving him a brief but firm handshake.

Detective Mulligan made sure not to use too much strength while shaking this young and delicate lady's hand and released it a second sooner to avoid making her feel uncomfortable.

"How can I help you?" He inquired, wondering what had brought these youngsters to the headquarters today.

Though Detective Sam Mulligan was around Rowan's age, he felt that he was way older than them thanks to their excellent skin conditions with no freckles or wrinkles in sight when compared to his tanned and rough skin.

"I want to meet everyone who worked on my brother's case, anyone who was even ten feet away from the accident site." Nita was the one who responded, clearly stating her intentions of arriving here.

Detective Mulligan seemed a little confused upon hearing this, as it surely was uncommon to hear such a request.

Most of the victim's family members who come here would just speak to the detective, asking all of the details about the case or bring a lawyer with them who would do the same.

However, here was a young lady who wished to speak to every individual who ever entered the crime scene.

"There were quite a few of them..." Detective Mulligan revealed, his eyes drifting to Rowan, who was the oldest in the group.

He was hoping Rowan would intervene since bringing back so many police personnel from their assignments just for this young lady to speak to them would be a waste of police resources.

However, to his dismay, Rowan shot him an awkward smile but did not intend to speak up in his favor.

Turning his attention back to the young woman, he tried scanning her to understand what she was wished to accomplish by this but found nothing as her blank expressions made her hard to read.

"How long will it take for everyone to get here?" Nita spoke up when she did not hear the answer she was waiting for.

Her tone, dripping with impatience, made the big man frown but he concealed it in no time.

After all, the police commissioner had already given them a heads-up about the victim's background when this case was assigned to him.

The Valken family was among the top echelon of the city and their influence was spread wide enough to even have the police commissioner be personally involved in this case.

Therefore, Detective Mulligan knew that the daughter of that family would have the same amount of influence, so he had no choice but to bring back everyone involved with the case just to accommodate her silly request.

"Give me about 30 minutes." He finally responded, sighing that he would be annoying a lot of individuals thanks to this young lady of the Valken family.

"Thank you for your hard work!" Rowan spoke up, trying to ease the tension that had risen in a matter of seconds.

However, his attempt was in vain as Detective Mulligan only gave him a strained smile that did not look genuine at all before pulling out his phone to call his colleagues.

"While we wait, I want to know everything you have uncovered so far." Nita's words once again made Detective Mulligan pause and stare at the young woman, who, ever since she had arrived, had been giving out orders to him like she ran this place.
