Chapter 76 - The Last Prophet Of Earth

CHAPTER 41 — Subtle Containment

Part One

Restrictions tightened without announcement.

On the third morning, Zheng Wen Te walked toward the southern corridor of the Inner Grounds.

A thin veil of energy shimmered across the passage.

Transparent.

Absolute.

He did not touch it.

He changed direction without expression.

Two disciples stood at a distance, pretending to discuss sword forms.

Observers.

He memorized their faces.

Containment did not begin with chains.

It began with narrowing options.

Later that afternoon, he was summoned again—

Not to a hall.

To an arena.

Circular. Open. Quiet.

A young core disciple stood opposite him.

Sword drawn.

"Demonstration only," the overseeing elder said.

"No killing intent."

The young disciple attacked instantly.

Fast.

Precise.

Economical.

Zheng Wen Te stepped aside, redirected, absorbed momentum.

He did not strike to dominate.

He matched rhythm.

The elders did not watch technique.

They watched fluctuation.

Mid-exchange, the sword angle shifted abruptly—

Closer to lethal.

A test within a test.

For a fraction of a second—

Zheng Wen Te's spiritual pressure spiked.

Not outward.

Inward.

He could end this.

He saw the opening.

He felt the decisive trajectory.

Almost—

He withdrew instead.

The sword stopped inches from his throat.

The arena fell silent.

"Why did you not finish?" the overseeing elder asked.

Zheng Wen Te lowered his hand.

"Escalation would have clarified nothing."

The elder's gaze sharpened.

"Or you feared consequence?"

Zheng Wen Te met his eyes.

"I feared becoming predictable."

That answer unsettled them more than aggression would have.
