Sofia's heart pounded as Arin urged his horse forward, hers and Leila's following close behind. The trees whipped past, branches snapping at their faces. The sound of hooves grew louder, and Sofia knew they were being pursued. Arin led them off the path, into a thick thicket of trees. They rode hard, the horses' breathing labored. Sofia could hear the shouts of their pursuers, the sound of swords being drawn.
Arin stopped suddenly, his horse rearing up. "Get down," he shouted, grabbing Sofia's arm. Leila was already off her horse, pulling Sofia down. They huddled behind a thick trunk, Arin's sword drawn. Sofia's heart was racing, her breath coming in short gasps. This was it. They were going to be caught. The riders burst into the clearing, swords drawn. Arin stood, his sword flashing in the fading light. "Stay back," he growled, his eyes fixed on the men.
The men hesitated, their eyes flicking to Sofia and Leila. Arin took advantage of the distraction, charging forward, his sword swinging. The sound of cl steel on steel filled the air, and Sofia knew they were in a fight for their lives. Leila's hand was on her arm, her voice urgent. "Princess, we need to get out of here." Sofia nodded, her mind racing. They had to get away, but where could they go?
