The lowest vault of the Gonggong Black Site did not feel like a prison. It felt like a tomb that had already been robbed.
The air tasted of ozone and ancient, oxidized copper. Frost crept up the walls, born from shattered cryogenic pods leaking pale, glowing fluid into the zero-gravity vacuum above. At the center of the heavy, high-gravity floor lay the severed chains of the Chiyou warlord—thick links of condensed spiritual energy, violently sheared in half.
And standing amidst the ruin, perfectly undisturbed, was Dove.
She did not carry the frantic energy of a battlefield. Her immaculate white coat was a stark contrast to the miles of blood and rust they had descended through. Her featureless porcelain mask, painted with a single weeping red eye, tilted slightly as Darian and Kael stepped into the vault.
Kael's heavy pneumatic pistons hissed as he locked his stance. His rusted iron faceplate twitched with micro-tremors, optics zeroing in on the stark white coat.
"I know you," Kael's synthesized voice ground out, vibrating with unrestrained fury. "You are the anomaly from the Spero Estate massacre. POND registry codename: Seraph."
"Kael, wait—!" Darian warned, hand gripping his unignited mag-blade.
Kael did not wait for authorization. The armored giant roared, charging like a mechanized boulder. He raised his massive assault rifle, unleashing a deafening barrage.
High-caliber, armor-piercing rounds tore across the vault, muzzle flash strobing against the dark stone.
Dove didn't raise a shield. She didn't even draw a weapon.
As Kael closed the distance, she raised a slender, white-gloved hand and delivered a frictionless palm strike to the empty air between them.
A localized pulse of kinetic force slammed into Kael's chest. The shockwave shoved the juggernaut backward mid-stride, his robotic shell grinding. Heavy boots screeched against the stone, ruining his firing stance as supersonic lead sprayed harmlessly into the dark ceiling.
"POND is always so loud," Dove purred. Her voice was a smooth, harmonic distortion that didn't compete with the echo of gunfire; it slipped underneath it, cutting directly into their minds. "You rely on heavy iron because you are terrified of what grows in the dark."
She hovered near the base of the central elevator shaft over a pile of broken bodies—Heavenly Court Enforcers and deranged prisoners who had plummeted to their deaths during the riot.
From her coat pocket, Dove withdrew a single flower.
It was a lotus, but its petals were a sickly, translucent white, threaded with pulsing, dark-red veins. It practically hummed with the raw, volatile energy of uncut Spero essence.
"The Doctor requires a few more minutes to clear the airspace," Dove stated calmly. She let the flower slip from her fingers, dropping it onto the corpses. "Keep the tin man busy."
The moment the lotus touched the pooled blood, the vault contorted.
It wasn't a bloom; it was a detonation of parasitic biology. Thick, dark-red roots erupted from the delicate petals, burrowing instantly into dead flesh with a sickening wet crunch. Darian watched in horror as the corpses began to spasm. The bio-alchemy was aggressive, rewriting anatomy in seconds. Spines arched backward and snapped. Ribcages tore open, weaving with jagged bark and corrupted bone to fuse three prisoners into a single, towering abomination.
The beast rose on multi-jointed limbs, exposed amber cores protected by snapping jaws forged from splintered femurs. It let out an ear-splitting shriek that shattered the remaining cryogenic glass.
It lunged, a massive bone scythe aimed to decapitate Kael.
"Flesh is weak!" Kael roared, recovering from his stumble. Boot thrusters flared bright blue. Dropping his rifle, the armored giant threw his crossed arms up, catching the bone scythe mid-swing.
The impact sent a shockwave through the floor, grinding Kael backward in a shower of sparks, but he held the line. "I am the wall! Proceed, Darian! I will crush this rot!"
Kael's thrusters screamed as he locked up with the mass of corrupted biology, entirely consuming his attention and cutting Darian off.
Darian was alone with the assassin.
Dove turned her masked face toward him. The silence around her felt heavy, oppressive, suffocating the ambient noise of the battle behind them.
Darian's thumb hit the activation switch. His kinetic mag-blade ignited with a sharp shing, burning bright blue in the dim vault. But his hands were shaking. The rust stain smeared across his chest plate felt like a physical weight, pulling his posture down.
"You wear the uniform of a savior," Dove whispered, closing the distance with agonizing slowness. "You practice the smile. You hold your breath."
"Shut up," Darian choked out, raising his blade.
"But I smell the rust on your chest. I smell the rot," Dove continued, her painted red eye fixed on his heart. "You sold out the innocent to save your own skin. You finally looked in the mirror and realized the reflection was empty. Let me show you what lives in the void."
Dove reached out. She bypassed his guard effortlessly, her slender, white-gloved fingers pressing lightly against the messy smear of orange rust resting over his POND insignia.
Reality tore.
It wasn't a hard-light projection. It was a localized collapse. A veil of pitch-black darkness bled outward from her silhouette, expanding with impossible velocity. The shadows dripped upward, swallowing the pale light, swallowing the stone, swallowing the world.
"No—" Darian gasped, stumbling backward.
The darkness crashed over him like a tidal wave.
Instantly, the deafening roar of Kael fighting the abomination vanished. The cold floor beneath Darian's boots ceased to exist. All sensory input was severed. There was no up, no down, no sound. Just an endless, suffocating void of absolute black.
Darian floated in the sensory deprivation, his pulse a frantic, hammering drumbeat in his ears.
"Kael!" he screamed.
The sound died inches from his face, swallowed by the veil.
But the dark didn't last.
The suffocating abyss fractured, bleeding away into blinding, sterile white light. The heavy, metallic tang of the Black Site evaporated, replaced by the crisp, climate-controlled scent of ozone and polished marble.
Darian stumbled forward, his boots hitting a solid, immaculate floor.
He blinked, throwing a hand up to shield his eyes from the harsh overhead glare. As his vision adjusted, the breath was knocked out of his lungs.
He wasn't in a prison anymore.
Towering black glass walls vaulted into a pristine blue sky. Hovering hard-light banners flashed with the green-and-silver POND insignia. Security pylons hummed softly in the distance.
He was standing in the central concourse of the POND Institute on New Aether.
Darian looked down at his chest. The ugly smear of orange rust was gone. His cadet uniform was spotless, crisp, and brand new. He wasn't gripping a kinetic mag-blade. His hands were empty, and trembling.
It was a memory. The very first day he had stepped onto the Institute grounds, nervous, terrified, and desperate to belong.
"Hey."
The voice didn't echo from the void. It was close. It was warm, and painfully, devastatingly familiar.
Darian slowly raised his head.
Walking toward him beneath the sunlight streaming through the glass was a boy with brown hair and sharp, calculating, yet undeniably kind eyes. He didn't carry a weapon. He didn't look disappointed. He carried a soft, unassuming grace.
It was Silas. Alive.
The boy stopped a few feet away. He looked at Darian, taking in his tense posture and nervous trembling, and the corners of his eyes crinkled as he offered a genuine, brilliant smile.
It was the exact same warm, easy smile Darian had spent his entire life trying to forge.
"You look a little lost," Silas said gently. He stepped forward and extended his hand. "I'm Silas. It's nice to meet you."
Darian stood frozen in the pristine sunlight, staring at the outstretched hand as his heart shattered.
