Chapter 53 - Quiet Before the Storm

The city lights flickered beneath the tall glass windows of the penthouse as night slowly settled over the skyline. Anna sat on the couch with her laptop resting on her knees, scrolling through emails that seemed to multiply every minute. Married life hadn't slowed anything down. If anything, the responsibilities had only grown heavier.

Across the room, Oliver stood by the window with his phone in his hand, his expression unreadable as he looked out over the city. The faint glow of the lights reflected in his dark eyes.

Anna glanced at him. "You've been standing there for ten minutes."

Oliver turned his head slightly, the corner of his lips lifting into a small smirk. "Just thinking."

"That usually means trouble," she replied lightly.

He walked over slowly and took the laptop from her hands, setting it aside on the table. Before she could protest, he pulled her gently toward him so she was standing right in front of him.

"You work too much," he murmured.

"And you don't?" Anna raised an eyebrow.

Oliver leaned down slightly until their faces were only inches apart. "That's different."

"How?"

"Because I'd rather spend my time watching you."

Anna laughed softly, shaking her head. "You're impossible."

"Maybe," he said quietly, his hand sliding around her waist and pulling her closer. "But you married me anyway."

For a moment the world outside seemed to fade. The busy city, the companies, the endless meetings—none of it mattered when he looked at her like that.

Anna rested her head against his chest, listening to the steady rhythm of his heartbeat.

"Do you ever think about how strange this is?" she asked softly.

"What is?"

"Everything. School, the years apart… and now this."

Oliver's hand moved slowly through her hair, his fingers gentle but possessive.

"I thought about you for ten years," he said quietly. "This isn't strange to me. It's exactly how it was supposed to be."

Anna looked up at him, surprised by the seriousness in his voice.

Before she could respond, Oliver's phone buzzed on the table behind them.

He glanced at the screen, and for a brief second the calm expression on his face changed. His jaw tightened.

Anna noticed immediately.

"Work?" she asked.

Oliver locked the phone and slipped it into his pocket. "Something like that."

Anna narrowed her eyes slightly. "You're hiding something."

He stepped closer again, brushing his thumb lightly across her cheek.

"Not hiding," he said quietly. "Just handling things."

Anna studied him for a moment but didn't push further. Oliver had always been like this—calm on the surface, but with a storm of thoughts underneath.

They moved to the balcony together, the cool night air brushing against them as the city stretched endlessly below.

Oliver stood behind her, his arms wrapping around her waist.

"No matter what happens," he murmured near her ear, "you trust me, right?"

Anna didn't hesitate.

"Always."

Oliver closed his eyes for a brief moment, holding her a little tighter.

But far away in another part of the city, someone was already watching their lives carefully… waiting for the perfect moment to step back into their world.

And neither of them knew that the past they thought was long gone was about to return.
