Chapter 30 - Chapter 30 – When He Opened His Eyes

Darkness did not leave Lin Tianren all at once.

It retreated slowly—like a tide pulling back from a shattered shore.

Pain came first.

Not sharp.

Not explosive.

But deep.

His meridians felt like cracked glass channels through which molten iron had once flowed. His ribs throbbed in dull rhythm. His core… was quiet. Too quiet.

Then came sound.

Wind through leaves.

Distant water.

And somewhere near him—

The slow, steady breath of something powerful.

He opened his eyes.

Above him, wooden beams carved with ancient beast runes formed the ceiling of the sanctuary chamber. Soft green light pulsed along the walls.

He turned his head slightly.

Nine golden tails swayed gently beside him.

Fox.

No—

Not the Fox he remembered.

The aura was deeper now. Steadier. Vast.

Gold Rank.

A soft rumble escaped its throat as it sensed his awakening. It lowered its head and touched his shoulder gently.

Lin Tianren exhaled slowly.

"You evolved…"

Fox's golden pupils shimmered. Pride. Relief.

He tried to sit up.

Pain shot through him immediately.

A calm voice spoke from the doorway.

"You should not move."

The Beast Queen stepped inside.

Bai Xinyue.

Her emerald robes flowed softly around her. Her presence still carried authority—but something was different.

Dimmer.

Not weakened.

But injured.

Lin Tianren noticed the faint black vein beneath the silk at her side. Abyss corruption.

His eyes hardened slightly.

"You were wounded."

She did not deny it.

"A distant strike. During the retreat."

Silence lingered between them.

He lowered his gaze.

"The village."

She nodded once.

"Destroyed."

The word did not echo loudly.

It sank.

Like a stone into deep water.

"How many?"

"Most."

That was enough.

His fingers tightened slightly against the bedding.

He had been unconscious while the world burned.

 The Truth Told

A knock came at the chamber entrance.

A cultivator entered.

Mid-Silver.

Robes bearing the emblem of the Beast Queen's sect.

Disciple Commander Wei Jian.

He bowed respectfully.

"Lord Lin."

The title felt heavy.

Wei Jian's expression was calm—but grief hid behind discipline.

"You deserve to know what occurred while you slept."

Lin Tianren forced himself upright despite pain.

"Tell me everything."

Wei Jian began.

After Lin collapsed, the Beast Queen withdrew him and Fox to the inner sanctuary. Demon Lord pressure lingered but did not pursue directly.

Instead—

The Demon Lord shifted strategy.

The Human Frontier Village was attacked first.

No generals.

Just overwhelming numbers.

Civilian casualties were catastrophic.

"Families wiped out," Wei Jian said quietly. "Many did not even understand what was happening before it ended."

Lin Tianren closed his eyes briefly.

Faces he had seen.

Children who once waved at passing cultivators.

Gone.

Wei Jian continued.

"But that was only the beginning."

Three days after the village fell—

The Demon Army divided.

One force moved toward Azurewall City.

A trade and cultivation hub.

Three sect branches stationed there.

The demons struck at dusk.

Coordinated waves.

Silver and Half-Gold generals.

The city nearly collapsed.

"Nearly?" Lin asked.

Wei Jian's tone shifted slightly.

"It was saved."

 The Princess of Fire

Wei Jian's eyes held faint respect now.

"A figure descended into the western district at the height of the assault."

"Zhao Lianhua."

Lin Tianren had heard the name before.

Royal bloodline.

Imperial lineage.

Wei Jian nodded.

"Princess of the Proud Family. Phoenix Bloodline inheritor."

She entered not as reinforcement.

But as a storm.

Fire parted demon ranks.

Silver generals burned.

One Half-Gold forced into retreat.

Her presence alone stabilized the collapsing defense line long enough for surviving elders to reorganize.

"She created flame corridors," Wei Jian said. "Civilians escaped through paths carved in fire while demons were incinerated at the edges."

Lin Tianren listened without interruption.

"She does not fight defensively," Wei Jian added. "She dominates. The demons shifted attention entirely toward her."

"How many did she kill?"

"Confirmed over one hundred directly. Indirect casualties higher."

"And the city?"

"Forty percent destroyed. But not annihilated."

That distinction mattered.

Without her—

Azurewall would be ash.

Lin Tianren's gaze lowered slightly.

While he lay unconscious—

Others carried the burden.

 What Was Lost

Wei Jian did not soften details.

Half-Gold Vice-Patriarch of Azure Sword Sect—dead.

Medical disciples from Crimson Pill Pavilion—slaughtered early in the breach.

Civilian casualties—thousands.

Orphans now wandering the outer districts.

Spirit wells contaminated.

Trade routes cut.

The human frontier destabilized.

Each sentence felt like a stone placed upon Lin Tianren's chest.

Not crushing.

But heavy.

He asked quietly:

"Why target civilians?"

The Beast Queen answered this time.

"To weaken morale. To provoke emotional instability. To force premature decisions."

Demon Lord Shadow was not reckless.

He was patient.

He wanted Lin Tianren to move before he was ready.

 The Beast Queen's Burden

Lin Tianren finally looked fully at Bai Xinyue.

"You could not intervene."

It was not accusation.

It was understanding.

Her injury pulsed faintly beneath emerald aura.

"If I moved again at that time," she said calmly, "the corruption would have spread faster. And the Demon Lord may have forced direct confrontation."

"And Fox?"

"He had just evolved. His foundation needed stabilization."

Lin Tianren nodded slowly.

Strategically correct.

Emotionally painful.

 Awakening of Purpose

He shifted his gaze to Fox.

Nine tails swayed gently, but there was new steadiness there.

Gold Rank.

His partner had crossed a realm while he lay helpless.

"Did I endanger everyone?" he asked quietly.

Wei Jian answered firmly.

"No."

Silence followed.

"The Golden Heaven Sword Scripture you invoked," Wei Jian continued, "changed the war's trajectory. Two Half-Gold eliminated. Thousands of demons erased. The Demon Lord adjusted because of you."

Not because he was weak.

But because he was dangerous.

Lin Tianren absorbed that.

Strength had consequences.

Weakness had consequences.

Inaction had consequences.

There was no version of this path without loss.

 Zhao Lianhua

"What kind of person is she?" Lin asked.

Wei Jian paused briefly.

"Arrogant."

A faint hint of amusement touched his voice.

"Proud beyond reason. Competitive. Unyielding. She does not like to be overshadowed."

Lin Tianren almost smiled faintly.

"She sounds… troublesome."

The Beast Queen spoke quietly.

"She is powerful. And young. Like you."

There was weight behind those words.

Zhao Lianhua did not defend Azurewall out of obligation alone.

Pride demanded response.

Royal blood demanded dominance.

The Proud Family would not allow demons to claim territory without retaliation.

"She may seek you," Bai Xinyue added.

"Why?"

"Because you killed what she intended to kill."

Lin Tianren exhaled slowly.

Of course.

Two Half-Gold slain.

A sovereign beast born.

The political landscape had shifted.

Royal factions would notice.

 Outside the Sanctuary

Lin Tianren stood eventually.

With assistance.

Meridians fragile but stable.

He stepped outside the chamber.

The forest was calm.

Too calm.

Far beyond the trees—

Smoke still faintly marked the horizon.

Azurewall.

Human lands.

Loss.

Fox walked beside him quietly.

Nine tails casting long shadows.

He asked:

"How many demons remain active near the frontier?"

Wei Jian answered:

"Approximately two thousand. Regrouping. Awaiting command."

"And the Demon Lord?"

"Still not personally descended."

So this was only the opening phase.

Lin Tianren looked toward the sky.

He did not feel rage.

Not wild.

Not reckless.

Just clarity.

The world had shifted while he slept.

Villages burned.

Cities scarred.

People died.

Others fought in his place.

Zhao Lianhua carved fire through darkness.

The Beast Queen bled quietly to preserve balance.

Fox evolved.

He had awakened not to peace—

But to responsibility.

He turned toward Bai Xinyue.

"I will recover."

Not a boast.

A statement.

"And then?"

Wei Jian asked.

Lin Tianren's gaze hardened.

"Then I will go to Azurewall."

Not for glory.

Not for pride.

But to understand the scale of what was at stake.

To meet the Princess of Fire who had held the line.

To see the orphans.

To walk through the ruins.

Power without perspective was dangerous.

He would not move blindly again.

Fox's tails flared softly.

Agreement.

The Beast Queen studied him for several seconds.

Then nodded once.

"Rest first. Strength without stability is recklessness."

He inclined his head.

For now—

He would heal.

But the next step was forming clearly.

The Demon Lord had chosen cruelty.

Zhao Lianhua had answered with flame.

Now—

Lin Tianren would rise not as a reckless Silver pushing beyond limits—

But as someone who understood what every step cost.

The war was no longer abstract.

It had faces.

Names.

Ashes.

And he had opened his eyes to all of it.
