Chapter 81 - Chapter 81: Stepping Into Power

Chapter 81: Stepping Into Power

(Jay Jay's POV)

The air inside Mariano Enterprises felt different this time.

Not unfamiliar.

Not intimidating.

But expectant.

Like the building itself knew something had changed.

I stood beside my dad, Percy leaning casually against the glass wall, while Keifer stayed just a step behind me—close enough to feel, not close enough to take over.

Jay:

"…so what happens now?"

Dad didn't hesitate.

Dad:

"You start."

I blinked.

Jay:

"Just like that?"

Dad:

"Just like that."

Percy clapped dramatically.

Percy:

"YES. FINALLY. ACTION."

Jay:

"Percy—"

Percy:

"NO, THIS IS IMPORTANT. THIS IS YOUR MAIN CHARACTER MOMENT."

Keifer coughed, hiding a smile.

Jay:

"I am not having a 'main character moment.'"

Percy gasped.

Percy:

"YOU LITERALLY WALKED INTO A CORPORATE BUILDING AFTER YEARS, GOT YOUR POSITION BACK, AND YOU'RE SAYING THIS ISN'T A MOMENT??"

Jay:

"…okay maybe a little."

Percy pointed aggressively.

Percy:

"THANK YOU."

Dad shook his head slightly, but there was a faint smile on his face.

Dad:

"Come with me."

I followed him.

Keifer moved too.

Dad glanced back.

Dad:

"He can come."

Keifer nodded once.

Keifer:

"I'm not leaving."

I didn't say anything.

But something in my chest settled.

(Keifer's POV)

This wasn't my world.

Not entirely.

But I understood it.

Boardrooms.

Power.

Decisions that change everything.

And Jay?

She fit here.

Perfectly.

Not because she was trying.

But because she belonged.

We entered a conference room.

Large.

Minimal.

Sharp.

Executives were already seated.

They looked up.

Curious.

Assessing.

Then—

Recognition.

"Ms. Mariano…"

Jay didn't hesitate.

Jay:

"Good morning."

Her voice was calm.

Steady.

Like she had never left.

And just like that—

The room shifted.

Respect.

Not given.

Earned.

(Jay Jay's POV)

I didn't sit immediately.

I stood at the head of the table.

Just for a second.

Because I needed them to see me.

Not as a daughter.

Not as someone returning.

But as someone who belonged here.

Jay:

"I know this is sudden."

Silence.

Jay:

"But I'm not here to take over overnight."

A few exchanged glances.

Jay:

"I'm here to learn, contribute, and build."

I placed my hand lightly on the table.

Jay:

"And I expect honesty. Efficiency. And respect."

Pause.

Jay:

"Because that's exactly what you'll get from me."

Silence again.

Then—

One of the senior executives nodded.

"Understood."

Another followed.

Then another.

And just like that—

The room accepted me.

Not completely.

But enough.

(Keifer's POV)

She didn't even look at me.

Not once during that.

And that told me everything.

Because she didn't need reassurance.

She didn't need support in that moment.

She was handling it.

Perfectly.

But when it ended—

When the meeting wrapped up—

She turned.

Looked at me.

Just for a second.

And that look said everything.

"I did it."

I nodded slightly.

"You did."

(Jay Jay's POV)

The meeting ended.

People left.

Percy walked in dramatically like he had been waiting outside just for this.

Percy:

"SO???"

Jay:

"I survived."

Percy gasped.

Percy:

"YOU DID MORE THAN SURVIVE."

Keifer leaned against the table.

Keifer:

"You handled them."

Percy nodded aggressively.

Percy:

"YOU DOMINATED."

Jay:

"…okay relax."

Percy grabbed my shoulders.

Percy:

"NO. THIS IS A BIG DEAL."

I laughed softly.

Jay:

"You're too much."

Percy:

"AND YOU LOVE ME."

Jay:

"…unfortunately."

Keifer smirked.

Keifer:

"You say that a lot."

Jay:

"Because it's true."

Percy looked between us.

Percy:

"YOU TWO ARE DISGUSTING."

Keifer:

"She's mine."

Percy gasped dramatically.

Percy:

"AGAIN WITH THAT."

Jay:

"Percy—"

Percy pointed at Keifer.

Percy:

"I'M WATCHING YOU."

Keifer:

"Good."

Percy narrowed his eyes.

Percy:

"I DON'T TRUST CALM PEOPLE."

Keifer smirked.

Keifer:

"You shouldn't."

I sighed.

Jay:

"You two are impossible."

Percy:

"HE STARTED IT."

Keifer:

"She did."

Jay:

"I DID NOTHING."

Percy and Keifer together:

"You did."

I blinked.

Then laughed.

Because for the first time—

Everything felt balanced.

Not overwhelming.

Not chaotic.

Just…

Right.

(Later — Rooftop, Evening)

(Keifer's POV)

We ended up on the rooftop.

New York stretched out in front of us.

Lights.

Movement.

Endless energy.

Jay stood near the edge.

Looking out.

Quiet.

I walked up beside her.

Keifer:

"You're thinking again."

Jay:

"…a lot."

Keifer:

"Good or bad?"

Jay:

"…big."

I nodded.

Keifer:

"Same."

Silence.

Then—

Jay:

"Do you ever feel like everything's changing too fast?"

Keifer:

"Yeah."

Jay:

"…does it scare you?"

I looked at her.

Keifer:

"No."

Jay:

"Why?"

Keifer smirked slightly.

Keifer:

"Because you're in it."

She froze.

Just a little.

Then—

Jay:

"…that was smooth."

Keifer:

"I know."

She smiled.

And leaned slightly closer.

Not much.

But enough.

(Jay Jay's POV — Ending)

The city felt endless.

Like possibilities didn't have limits here.

And maybe—

That's what this was.

A beginning.

Not just of college.

Not just of business.

But of everything we were becoming.

Jay (softly):

"…we're really doing this."

Keifer:

"Yeah."

Jay:

"No going back."

Keifer:

"No."

I looked at him.

Jay:

"Good."

And for once—

I meant it completely.
