Chapter 30 - Chapter 28: The Coming Storm

The silence in the penthouse was suffocatingly eerie.

Another storm was brewing. The sky beyond the windows was a heavy grey.

I sat restlessly on the sofa at the foot of the bed, my eyes locked on the bedroom door. I didn't dare look away.

Click.

A soft unlocking mechanism echoed. It wasn't the sharp beep of Ren's keycard... but the low hum of the security system powering down.

The heavy door slowly creaked open. Aunt Lin peeked inside, offered a faint smile, and stepped aside to let someone enter.

A tall man in black stepped inside, scanning the room before pulling off his cap, revealing a familiar, handsome face.

And a smile as a familiar, disarming smile.

"Mr. Zen!"

Instinct took over. I shot up and launched myself into his arms, clinging to him as if I would break without him.

"Mr. Zen... sob..."

"Shh... don't cry, you did so well."

Zen returned the embrace fiercely, stroking my hair with tenderness. His scent chased away the stench of this place

"I am right here. I never abandoned you."

He pulled back slightly, his thumbs gently wiping the tears from my cheeks. His gaze drifted downward, landing on my left ankle.

The raw, livid chafing from the metal shackle. Even though the chain was currently detached, the raw marks from the shackle were still visible.

An unreadable, dangerous glint flickered in Zen's eyes.

"He went this far?"

He dropped to one knee before me. His long fingers lightly traced the bruised flesh, as if handling something fragile.

"Does it hurt terribly?"

"Not anymore. I'm starting to get used to it."

"No one should ever have to get used to this kind of agony, Yurin."

He looked up, his eyes locking with mine, before lowering his head to press a feather-light kiss against the bruised skin. The touch was incredibly tender. It sent heat rushing to my face, my heart hammering so it threatened to burst.

"Mr. Zen, please stand up. You don't have to do this."

Zen rose to his feet. He began to pace, surveying the room. His eyes lingered on the heavily rumpled king-sized bed, then on Ren's discarded clothes draped over a chair.

"Hmph..." A dark, bitter chuckle vibrated in his throat. "He must be enjoying himself immensely. feeding on your suffering."

He walked back to me, pulling a fresh brown envelope from inside his jacket.

"Yurin... listen to me carefully."

"As of right now, His empire is collapsing. Stocks are free-falling, major clients are pulling out, and the banks are preparing to seize his assets."

"Really?" I gasped in shock. "It's that severe?"

"Yes. And when he reaches his breaking point..."

Zen gripped both of my shoulders, squeezing firmly to anchor my focus.

"He might hurt you far worse than before. When a madman is cornered, he often destroys what he loves most before destroying himself. That is why we must extract you immediately."

"When?"

"In two days," Zen stated, his tone carrying absolute authority.

"I will stage a fire alarm in this building. Using the master codes you sent, every security lock will automatically disengage."

"Aunt Lin will escort you up the fire escape to the rooftop."

"I will be waiting for you with a helicopter. We will not fail this time."

"But... that soon?" I hesitated. The image of Ren weeping brokenly into my shoulder last night flashed vividly in my mind.

"Will he... will he die? If his company collapses and I vanish again... how will he survive?"

Zen froze. He looked at me, a flicker of disappointment crossed his face, laced with a deeply buried frustration.

"Yurin... you are still worried about him? He chained you like an animal. He imprisoned you. He violated you. And you still pity him?"

"I..." I bowed my head, staring at my feet.

"He is sick, Mr. Zen. He told me he cannot exist without me. If I leave... he might kill himself."

Zen released a long, heavy sigh. He gently tilted my chin up, forcing me to meet his gaze.

"Listen to me, Yurin. Pity is the most terrifying shackle of all. Infinitely heavier than the metal chain around your ankle. If you don't sever this attachment, you will die alongside him in this hell."

"Make your choice."

"Stay here and be his lifeless doll until you rot. Let him break you over and over to vent his own madness. Or leave and start a new life. A life with true freedom, with happiness... and with me to take care of you."

He leaned in close, until the tips of our noses practically brushed. His warm breath ghosted across my skin.

"I love you, Yurin. Let me be the one to protect you. I swear I will never cause you this kind of agony."

His confession, so raw, direct, and incredibly sweet, entirely shattered the lingering walls of my hesitation.

"Yes..." I whispered.

"I will go with you... I choose you."

Zen smiled widely, the triumphant smile of a victor claiming his ultimate prize.

His hands cupped my face, his touch remarkably soft yet undeniably firm. He didn't rush. He didn't forcefully pull me. He simply lowered his head, agonizingly slowly, until his breath mingled with mine.

Then, he drew me into a kiss.

It was devastatingly tender, yet it carried an underlying, profound flavor of absolute possession. His warm tongue slipped past my lips, completely devouring my sweetness and swallowing every last drop of my hesitation.

Beep... Beep...

A muted alarm chimed from Zen's wristwatch.

"My time is up." He pulled away with visible reluctance, his thumb lightly tracing my swollen lower lip.

"I have to leave before Ren returns. Memorize the plan... two days."

"I will."

Zen walked toward the door, but paused before stepping out, glancing over his shoulder.

"Oh, Yurin. Watch your back. Ren will likely return in an explosive mood tonight over his collapsing empire. Do whatever it takes not to provoke him. Endure it... for me."

He left me with a warning, yet it sent a violent chill down my spine.

Zen slipped out, and Aunt Lin engaged the security locks back to their original state.

I stood alone in the center of the expansive room. The lingering warmth of his kiss still burned on my lips, but a creeping, paralyzing frost began to consume my mind.

Because I knew exactly what was coming, when Ren returned home, suffocating under the weight of his absolute defeat... the only one left to absorb the full impact of his wrath would be me.

And tonight... would likely be the longest, most agonizing night of my entire life.
