Chapter 8 - Chapter 8 Ultimate Defense vs Ultimate Guess

Chapter 8: Ultimate Defense vs Ultimate Guess

The whistle cut through the air.

Set 3.

Everything reset.

Everything didn't.

The scoreboard no longer mattered.

Not after the second set.

Not after the collapse.

What mattered now was the question neither side could avoid.

What does it mean to carry a team?

The ball rested in Reika Sawamura's hands.

She stood at the service line.

Still.

Silent.

Her eyes met Mao's.

Then she served.

The ball sliced over the net with controlled precision.

Not aggressive.

Not flashy.

Intentional.

Karasuno received cleanly.

The pass rose.

The set followed.

Spike.

Reika shifted.

No.

Not shifted.

Positioned.

Her arms met the ball.

Dig.

Perfect.

The ball returned to formation.

Another attack.

Reika was there.

Dig.

Another.

Dig.

Another.

Dig.

Every attack had an answer.

Every angle was covered.

Every gap was filled.

It wasn't simply defense anymore.

It was suffocation.

Mao watched from across the net.

Her eyes narrowed.

She's doing it again.

Kuroba's voice answered.

No.

Mao's expression changed.

She's doing more.

Reika's team moved.

One player stepped forward.

Another slid backward.

A third shifted toward the sideline.

Reika adjusted with them.

There was no visible command.

No hesitation.

No confusion.

Six players.

One defensive system.

Mao clenched her fist.

Sacred Ground.

Kuroba answered.

Expanded.

Before the Priestess

A younger Reika stood alone inside a gym.

A volleyball rested in her hands.

Sweat dripped from her chin.

She looked toward the empty court.

Then threw the ball against the wall.

Receive.

The ball bounced away.

She chased it.

Again.

Receive.

Again.

Miss.

Again.

Miss.

She dove.

Her arms hurt.

Her knees hurt.

Her lungs burned.

But she kept going.

A younger voice whispered:

"Why are you doing this?"

Reika looked down at her scraped arms.

Her answer was simple.

"Because I don't want to burden my team."

The ball rolled away.

She picked it up.

"If we lose..."

She paused.

"...I want to know I did everything I could."

She threw the ball again.

Receive.

Again.

Receive.

Again.

Miss.

Reika stared at the ball.

Then chased it.

She didn't ask how to become stronger.

She asked how to make the next ball playable.

Then the next.

Then the next.

Eventually, the question changed.

Not:

Can I receive this?

But:

What happens if I can't?

She trained for that too.

If the first receive failed, she chased the second.

If the second was bad, she saved the third.

If she couldn't reach it...

She learned how to make her teammates reach it.

That was where the Priestess began.

Back to Present

The rally refused to end.

Karasuno attacked.

Reika received.

Karasuno attacked again.

Tokonami covered.

Again.

Covered.

Again.

Covered.

Mao's eyes moved constantly.

Left.

Right.

Center.

Back row.

Front row.

She saw patterns.

She saw tendencies.

She saw probabilities.

But something was different.

There was no single point to break.

Reika's defense wasn't a wall.

It was a network.

Break one part...

Another part replaced it.

Mao attacked the corner.

Covered.

The seam.

Covered.

The short zone.

Covered.

The deep zone.

Covered.

Mao's jaw tightened.

There's no opening.

Kuroba spoke.

Look again.

Mao did.

There was something worse.

There wasn't a correct answer.

Every attack had multiple possible defensive responses.

Reika wasn't predicting one outcome.

She was preparing for several.

Mao's greatest weapon had always been prediction.

But prediction required the opponent to eventually choose.

Tokonami had created a defense where every player could answer multiple possibilities.

The court seemed smaller.

Smaller.

Smaller.

Until there was nowhere left to hit.

Tokonami scored.

4-1.

Rally 2: The Net Tightens

Karasuno changed tempo.

Faster sets.

Sharper approaches.

Decoys layered over decoys.

Mao accelerated.

Reika adjusted.

Mao delayed.

Reika waited.

Mao attacked early.

Tokonami covered.

A spike tore toward the corner.

Reika was already there.

Dig.

Another attack.

Cross-court.

Covered.

A feint.

Read.

A tip.

Caught.

The ball returned.

Mao watched Reika.

Her expression remained calm.

Not arrogant.

Not smug.

Just certain.

Mao's hands tightened.

How?

Kuroba answered.

Because you're still asking the wrong question.

What question?

You're asking where she's going.

Mao looked at Reika.

Ask why she's there.

Mao froze.

The Notebook

Pages.

Hundreds of them.

Spike angles.

Defensive formations.

Approach timings.

Probability trees.

Setter tendencies.

Block positioning.

Everything Mao had learned.

Everything she could calculate.

Every possible situation.

Every possible response.

A voice echoed in her memory.

"You can't hesitate."

Another page.

"You don't guess randomly."

Another.

"You find the highest probability."

Another.

"Then you act."

Mao flipped the pages faster.

Faster.

Faster.

Until the pages became meaningless.

Too many answers.

Too many branches.

Too many possibilities.

The notebook slammed shut.

Mao stared at it.

Then realized something.

There isn't always a highest probability.

Sometimes...

There were several.

Back to Present

The ball rose.

Set to the outside.

Mao approached.

Reika positioned herself.

Mao saw three possible attacks.

Line.

Cross.

Tip.

Reika had answers to all three.

Mao changed her approach.

Reika adjusted.

Mao smiled.

Not because she had found the answer.

Because she finally understood.

I don't need to.

Mao jumped.

Her body twisted.

She didn't choose the safest attack.

She didn't choose the highest-probability attack.

She chose one.

At the last possible moment.

The ball flew.

Reika moved.

Her fingers brushed it.

But the ball slipped past.

Point.

5-4.

Silence.

Reika blinked.

Not shock.

Recognition.

Mao landed.

Her breathing was steady.

Kuroba spoke.

There it is.

Mao smiled.

I'm done trying to know everything.

Rally 3: The First Crack

Reika served.

Karasuno received.

The rally began.

Mao watched.

She wasn't searching for certainty anymore.

She watched Reika's movement.

Watched the defenders.

Watched the setter.

Then she made a decision.

No calculation tree.

No perfect prediction.

Just choice.

The ball went somewhere Tokonami wasn't expecting.

Point.

6-5.

Reika looked at Mao.

Mao looked back.

Neither smiled.

They understood each other now.

Reika had found the answer to endless offense.

Mao had found the answer to endless defense.

Uncertainty.

If Reika prepared for every logical possibility...

Mao would choose an illogical one.

Not randomly.

Not carelessly.

Deliberately.

A guess.

The Priestess Breaks

The next rally started.

Mao attacked.

Reika covered.

Mao attacked again.

Reika covered.

Then Mao suddenly tipped.

Reika moved forward.

But Mao's teammate covered the returning ball.

Karasuno attacked again.

Mao didn't swing.

She delayed.

Reika waited.

Then Mao attacked somewhere completely different.

The ball landed.

7-5.

Reika stood up.

She looked at Mao.

"...You guessed."

Mao nodded.

"Yeah."

"You didn't know."

"No."

Reika's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Then why?"

Mao smiled.

"Because I chose it."

Reika stared.

Then she smiled.

"Interesting."

Reika's Breaking Point

The memory returned.

Reika on the floor.

Her arms trembling.

Balls had slipped past her.

One after another.

She had tried to predict.

Tried to move earlier.

Tried to cover more.

Still, balls landed.

She had stared at the floor.

"Why can't I hold it together?"

No answer.

Only silence.

Then she stood.

Picked up the ball.

"If I can't reach it..."

She moved wider.

"If I can't cover enough..."

She trained further.

"If one player can't reach it..."

She looked toward where her teammates would have stood.

"...then we'll reach it together."

That was the moment Sacred Ground changed.

It stopped belonging to Reika.

It belonged to Tokonami.

Back to Present

Reika raised her head.

Mao was already moving.

The ball came across the net.

Reika received.

The pass wasn't perfect.

Her teammate adjusted.

Another player covered.

The ball came back.

Mao attacked.

Reika reached it.

Barely.

The ball rose.

Tokonami recovered.

Mao watched.

So that's your answer.

Reika had expanded her defense until one player's failure didn't matter.

Mao had abandoned certainty until one player's prediction didn't matter.

The two systems were opposite.

Ultimate Defense.

Every possible answer exists.

Ultimate Guess.

The answer is chosen before certainty exists.

The rally continued.

Mao attacked.

Reika defended.

Mao changed.

Reika adapted.

Mao guessed.

Reika covered.

Mao guessed again.

Reika reached it.

The ball stayed alive.

Neither side yielded.

The scoreboard continued climbing.

9-8.

10-9.

11-10.

The match had transformed.

It was no longer simply offense versus defense.

It was certainty versus choice.

Coverage versus unpredictability.

A system designed to answer everything...

Against a player who had stopped asking for the correct answer.

Ultimate Guess

The next ball came toward Mao.

She received.

The set went high.

Mao approached.

Reika's entire defensive formation shifted.

Six players.

No gaps.

No obvious weakness.

Mao looked.

Nothing.

No opening.

No certainty.

No answer.

Her heartbeat slowed.

She remembered the notebook.

She remembered every probability tree.

Every calculation.

Every time she had tried to see the future before it happened.

She let the thought disappear.

I don't need to know.

Mao jumped.

Her eyes met Reika's.

I just need to choose.

She swung.

Not toward the safest space.

Not toward the most likely space.

Toward the space she believed in.

The ball flew.

Reika moved.

Her body reached the correct position.

Her platform extended.

But the angle was different.

Just different enough.

The ball slipped past.

Point.

12-10.

The gym erupted.

Mao landed.

She didn't celebrate.

She simply looked at Reika.

Reika stared back.

Then she nodded.

She understood.

Mao hadn't read her.

She hadn't predicted her.

She had simply made a decision before Reika could turn that decision into a known outcome.

Reika whispered:

"...You decided before I did."

Mao smiled.

"Yeah."

Final Exchange of the Chapter

The next rally began.

Reika's team spread across the court.

No gaps.

No hesitation.

No wasted movement.

Ultimate Defense.

Every possible answer prepared.

Every mistake covered.

Every ball given another chance.

Across the net, Mao stood still.

She wasn't searching anymore.

She wasn't calculating every possibility.

She wasn't trying to discover the one correct answer.

She simply watched.

Then chose.

Ultimate Guess.

One decision.

One commitment.

One answer chosen before certainty could exist.

The ball crossed the net.

Reika moved.

Mao moved.

The court seemed to divide between them.

Defense expanded infinitely.

Offense compressed into singular decisions.

Coverage vs certainty.

Endless answers vs chosen truth.

Neither philosophy was perfect.

Neither philosophy was guaranteed.

But both had reached their extreme.

Two paths.

Two answers.

Both incomplete.

Both absolute.

And neither willing to yield.
