Chapter 24 - Chapter 25 Water Wave Finneon and the Origin of Levels

A wild Water Wave Finneon appeared.

Just as Link was about to be hit by a sudden "water gun," Fennekin used "Psychic" to stop it.

But the Water Wave Finneon wasn't hostile; it just used a water gun to attract attention before starting to "whimper" and "na na na."

The Water Wave Finneon has an extremely wide vocal range, capable of producing more than ten different calls.

And when it started speaking, it sounded like an old-school anime character.

The translation function allowed Link to understand its meaning through its emotions—"Hungry, hungry."

"Do you still want to eat what you just ate?"

The Water Wave Finneon nodded its head above the water in a very human-like way, showing an expression that seemed like a smile.

  "Fen~"

  Fennekin agreed.

Link thought that since he had plenty left, feeding some to a wild Pokémon wouldn't hurt, and he could also see what effect the Water Wave Finneon would have after eating a Poffin made with Star Peach Berry.

After testing, the Water Wave Finneon's move power barely increased after eating the Poffin; it seemed that Fennekins increased power was mostly due to its young age.

1000+5 only increased the power by 0.5%, while 1+5 increased it fivefold.

Link felt a little regretful upon realizing this; he had thought he had unlocked a cheat code for his Pokémon—"get stronger by eating sweets."

He wanted to thank the Finneon for helping him obtain new experimental data, but found the guy was becoming quite persistent.

Although Poffin didn't have any "magic pill"-like functions, its deliciousness was undeniable. The lingering taste and texture made the Finneon love it, constantly pestering Link with phrases like "Brother, I want some!"

Seeing this, the Fennekin had a flash of inspiration.

  "Fennekin!"

Hey! Why don't we take it to the Rock Gym in Nazuna City?

Link thought it was true; with the upcoming activities in the water-rich Hoenn region, Water-type Pokémon like Finneon would be crucial.

However, he was unsure if Finneon in reality needed to reach level 38 to evolve.

By the time it evolved, it would be too late.

Furthermore, could every Finneon in reality truly evolve into the versatile Dolphin with a base stat total of 650?

  That seemed absurd.

The Wishiwashi's Sea Monster form, the Finneon awakening its Ancient Gene… these things, merely "background descriptions" in the game, might be a lifelong obstacle for them in reality.

After all, a single Wailord eats a ton of Wishiwashi every day, and Wailord can swallow an entire school of Wishiwashi in one gulp. If it were that easy to transform into a school of fish, would they still eat so voraciously?

Link was troubled; the inability to evolve into Dolphin was truly…

  "Eek?"

Finneon looked at him expectantly, thinking that perhaps it could find a long-term meal ticket.

This Pokémon is highly intelligent and affectionate towards humans. It not only rescues people who have fallen into the water during shipwrecks but also helps fishermen herd fish into nets.

Its level of affection is somewhat reminiscent of a golden retriever of the sea, and it's quite popular among humans.

  "Eek?"

In short, give me a straight answer, whether you'll take it or not.

Although this wasn't part of his plan… Link, amused and exasperated, pulled out a Poké Ball: "Alright, Finneon, would you be my companion during my travels in the Hoenn region?"

Finneon readily nodded, leaping out of the water with a magnificent Splash, tapping its nose against the Poké Ball before diving inside. A fish leap! Finneon got to daze, but Link felt that it was more like the Finneon had taken him in than him taking it in.

  Whatever, he'd keep it.

" Once I make money, Link will definitely buy a house away from the hustle and bustle, facing the sea with spring flowers blooming everywhere. Then I can raise Finneon in the sea.

  " "Let's go, Fennekin, let's give Finneon a check-up first."

Without a Pokédex, Link could only go to the Pokémon Center, where, with Nurse Joy's help, Finneon underwent a comprehensive examination.

  [Species: Poppy Dolphin]

  [Nickname: Water Wave Dolphin]

  [Trainer: Link]

  [Gender: Male]

  [Type: Water]

  [Level: 27~29]

  [Ability: Water Veil]

  [HP/Energy: Average]

  [Attack/Power: Poor]

  [Defense/Protect: Average]

  [Special Attack/Knowledge: Poor]

  [Special Defense/Psychic: Average]

  [Speed/Agility: Average]

  [Moves: Water Gun/Water Jet/Ultrasonic/Help/Encore/Drain Kiss/Adorable/Acrobatics/Haze]

"Looks pretty good. It actually knows quite a few support moves. When catching an opponent to boost their stats, just use 'Encore' and 'Ultrasonic' followed by 'Drain Kiss' repeatedly." Seeing

Link start planning tactics just by observing the Finneon's move set, Nurse Joy, who had initially wanted to advise him not to focus too much on individual Pokémon abilities, breathed a sigh of relief.

It didn't seem like the type of trainer who focused on individual Pokémon, constantly catching and releasing them to find the perfect one.

"Great tactics, making the opponent dizzy." "Joey had to admit that this approach was a bit difficult to handle.

In this era, the Pokémon League had been established for less than a century, and Pokémon battles were only just beginning to sweep the globe.

Most trainers were in a state of '4 STAB moves' or '4 SPECIAL moves'; being familiar with stat boosting was already considered a beginner's skill, and understanding the value of status moves was enough to qualify them as 'professionals.'

For now, Link possessed a vision and tactics ahead of his time, allowing him to thrive in the lower ranks of the Elite Four.

"But speaking of which, how exactly does the Pokémon Center determine Pokémon levels? It's just a range?"

Link suddenly realized that people in reality could still determine a Pokémon's level.

"It's based on data. The League has a vast amount of data on different types of Pokémon.

Experts usually define the average of the 10 strongest known Pokémon of a particular type as 'level 50,' while the average level of newly hatched Pokémon of the same type is defined as 'level 1.'

"This way, you can get a range of stats from 1 to 100." Link didn't quite understand this approach: "

It sounds inaccurate, treating the limit a person can reach as level 50 or something."

This might lead to trainers training their Pokémon and then finding out at the Pokémon Center a couple of days later that their Pokémon has dropped several levels.

Nurse Joy actually thought so too.

But then again, who can truly know the range of a Pokémon's abilities at any given level?

If someone artificially calculates a limit that no one has ever reached, how can we know if it's accurate?

The level data detected by the Pokémon Center's equipment is only for reference and shouldn't be taken too seriously.

At least until there's a major technological breakthrough, this level calculation method is sufficient as a reference standard for ordinary trainers like Link who don't have any special abilities.
