Chapter 54: Hey, what can kindergarten kids choose...? Leftovers "Scale Shot" Dragonite!?
If it were a completely realistic battle, Link might still lose because he'd only been in the game for a week and wasn't familiar with real-world battles. But if it's a 4-skill turn-based system...
Battle Factory! Your king has returned!
"Okay, please choose 3 Pokémon from the 6 randomly selected Pokémon by the system. The starting Pokémon cannot be changed arbitrarily, so please consider carefully."
As soon as the words were spoken, the screen displayed 6 random Pokémon:
* Meganium (Grass), Ability: Leaf Guard, Item: Leek, Moves: Reflect, Light Screen, Leech Seed, Protect.
* Porygon2 (Normal), Ability: Analytic, Item: Eviolite, Moves: Recover, Ice Beam, Substitute, Thunderbolt.
* Ledian (Bug/Flying), Ability: Iron Fist, Item: King's Rock, Moves: Comet Punch, Tailwind, Drain Punch, Fire Punch.
* Magikarp (Water), Ability: Swift Swim, Item: Oran Berry, Moves: Splash, Tackle, Flail.
* Pelipper (Water/Flying), Ability: Drizzle, Item: Rocky Helmet, Moves: Hurricane, U-turn, Ice Beam, Tailwind.
* Marshtomp (Water/Ground), Ability: Torrent, Item: Focus Sash, Moves: Counter, Yawn, Protect, Waterfall.
"Ugh..." After looking at the random options, Link subconsciously rubbed his eyes. Is this the power of randomness? He wanted to apologize to A-Liu for defending this place yesterday. This was a nightmare!
After careful consideration, he chose Porygon2, Pelipper, and Meganium.
Porygon2 with Eviolite (Evolution Stone) was his best bet for durability. Its Analytic ability would boost damage since it's usually slower than its opponents. He skipped Marshtomp (Mudkip's evolution) because the "Focus Sash + Counter" strategy was too predictable for a serious trainer.
"I've made my choice."
Link rubbed the Fennekin on his shoulder, sipped his hot cocoa-flavored "healing wine," and informed the staff that the battle could begin. In the Battle Factory, each round consists of 7 battles. A loss invalidates everything.
Soon, his first opponent arrived: a kindergarten child! Link felt relieved. What could a powerful Pokémon a kid choose? Probably the cutest one, right?
— Battle Factory: Battle 1 —
"Porygon2, prepare for battle!"
"Go! Dragonite!"
Link: ...
Even Fennekin wagged its tail in surprise. A Dragonite?! This was a case of being both unpredictable and cunning!
Under the same level 50 conditions, Porygon2 was no match for Dragonite's speed. The kid commanded: "Scale Shot!"
Dragonite fired five scales. Each hit Porygon2 precisely. Dragonite's Defense plummeted, but its Speed skyrocketed! Porygon2's HP fell to 50%.
Link's face darkened. Does this kid have loaded dice? He chose the 4x super effective Ice Beam, but under the protection of the Multiscale ability, the attack only dealt a fraction of the damage. Then, he saw Dragonite's HP recover slightly.
Leftovers! The kid had Leftovers! This meant if the kid used Scale Shot again and hit fewer times, Porygon2 might survive.
Next turn, Link stayed with Ice Beam. Suddenly, Dragonite vanished from sight.
"Extreme Speed!"
Realizing his defense was low, the kid (likely with his parent's hint) used a priority move to finish Porygon2. However, Link knew then that the opponent had lost. Extreme Speed didn't have the power to KO a 50% HP Porygon2. It only dealt 20% damage.
Porygon2 survived and fired back a full-power Ice Beam. Without Multiscale, the dragon succumbed to its fatal weakness instantly.
Link breathed a sigh of relief. But Porygon2 was low on health.
"Go! Pikachu!"
Great, it's Pikachu! Link felt saved. But he knew even a Pikachu with Volt Tackle could be dangerous if he wasn't careful. He decisively chose to switch tactics.
