Chapter 15 - The Sidebar Burden

Chapter Fifteen, where the "Happily Ever After" meets the reality of a new, high-stakes mystery.

Chapter Fifteen: The Honeymoon Phase-Out

The Italian coast was supposed to be a place of silence. No billable hours, no depositions, and certainly no international corporate espionage.

Julian and Elena sat on the terrace of a villa in Positano, the Tyrrhenian Sea a shimmering expanse of sapphire beneath them. For the first time in a decade, Julian's phone was off. Elena's was buried at the bottom of her suitcase.

"I could get used to this," Elena murmured, leaning back in the wrought-iron chair, a glass of Limoncello in her hand. "No goats. No judges. No Sterling nephews."

Julian smiled, his tan skin glowing in the Mediterranean sun. He looked younger here, away from the obsidian desk. "I'm already planning our retirement. We buy a vineyard, you write your memoirs, and I spend my days arguing with the local mayor about water rights."

"You'd be bored in a week," she teased.

"Six days, probably," he conceded.

Their peace was interrupted by the sound of splashing. Leo and Mia were in the infinity pool, engaged in a heated "legal debate" over who owned the inflatable swan.

"I have prior possession!" Leo shouted, splashing a wave toward his sister.

"But I have the easement rights to the deep end!" Mia countered, wiping water from her goggles.

Julian chuckled. "They're definitely ours. They're litigating inflatable pool toys before they've even hit puberty."

The Intrusion

The tranquility shattered when a villa staff member approached the terrace, looking nervous. He held a silver tray, but it didn't contain appetizers. It held a sleek, black encrypted tablet.

"Mr. Thorne," the man whispered. "A courier arrived by boat. He said it was a matter of national security. He refused to leave until I brought this to you."

Julian's face went from relaxed to "Ice King" in three seconds flat. He looked at Elena, a silent apology in his eyes.

"Don't," she said, her heart sinking. "Julian, we have three days left."

"I have to see what it is, Elena. If they sent a boat to a private villa in Positano, the firm is on fire."

Julian swiped the screen. The tablet required a retinal scan and a biometric thumbprint. Once unlocked, a single document appeared. It wasn't a lawsuit. It was a Red Notice from Interpol.

His breath hitched.

"What is it?" Elena asked, standing up to look over his shoulder.

"It's not the firm," Julian said, his voice dropping to a whisper. "It's my father."

The Thorne Legacy

Elena froze. Julian rarely spoke of his father, Thomas Thorne. The man had "retired" to Switzerland years ago after a scandal that almost broke the firm's predecessor. Julian had spent his entire career cleaning up the Thorne name, turning it from a symbol of old-money corruption into a beacon of modern justice.

"I thought your father was in a private care facility in Zurich," Elena said.

"He was," Julian said, scrolling through the documents. "But according to this, he disappeared forty-eight hours ago. And he didn't go alone. He took the Blackwood Archives with him."

The Blackwood Archives were the "black box" of the firm—a collection of files dating back to the 1920s that contained the secrets of New York's most powerful families. If those files were made public, the city's political and financial infrastructure would collapse.

"He's being accused of treason, Elena," Julian said, his hand trembling slightly as he handed her the tablet. "They think he's selling the archives to a private intelligence firm in Eastern Europe."

The Decision

Elena looked out at the sea, then back at her children playing in the pool. The "Sidebar Burden" had just grown a hundred times heavier. This wasn't just a court case; this was a war for their family's survival.

"Gary!" Julian barked into the villa's intercom. "Get the jet ready. We're leaving for Zurich in two hours."

Elena grabbed his arm. "Julian, wait. If we go, we're in. There's no coming back from a federal investigation. We'll be targets."

Julian looked at her, the love and the fear in his eyes warring for dominance. "He's my father, Elena. I can't let him destroy everything we've built. And I can't let him spend his final years in a cage."

Elena nodded, her resolve hardening. She walked over to the pool and whistled. Leo and Mia stopped splashing immediately.

"New plan, guys," Elena called out, her "Partner" voice returning. "The vacation is over. We're going on a secret mission."

"Is it a spy mission?" Leo asked, climbing out of the pool with wide eyes.

"The biggest one yet," Elena promised.

As they hurried into the villa to pack, the Italian sun felt colder. The honeymoon was over.
