Chapter 10 - Chapter 10 – A House Without Her

The silence inside the house felt different now.

It was no longer tense.

It was empty.

Arjun hadn't moved from the same spot for what felt like hours.

The door had closed.

But the echo of it—

It was still there.

Loud.

Relentless.

Final.

For the first time, he noticed something strange.

There was no sound of utensils from the kitchen.

No soft footsteps in the hallway.

No quiet presence moving around the house.

No Meera.

He swallowed hard and turned slowly.

Everything looked the same.

But nothing felt the same.

"Arjun."

Savitri's voice broke the silence.

He didn't respond immediately.

She walked closer, placing a hand on his shoulder.

"Don't think too much. She'll come back," she said calmly. "Where will she go?"

Arjun finally looked at her.

There was something in his eyes she hadn't seen before.

Distance.

"She left," he said quietly.

Savitri frowned. "It's just anger. Women do this all the time."

"No," Arjun replied slowly.

"This time… she meant it."

Savitri's hand tightened slightly.

"You're overreacting."

But Arjun stepped away.

For the first time—

He didn't seek comfort from her.

The Other Side

Outside, the world felt… lighter.

Not happier.

But freer.

Meera sat in the backseat of the car, her eyes fixed on the passing streets. Raghav sat beside her, silent, giving her the space she needed.

Neither of them spoke for a long time.

Because some decisions—

Don't need explanation.

"Are you okay?" Raghav finally asked gently.

Meera nodded faintly.

"I will be."

Her voice was soft.

But it held strength.

They reached a small house—Raghav's old property, long unused but still maintained.

It wasn't big.

It wasn't luxurious.

But it felt safe.

And for now—

That was enough.

As Meera stepped inside, she paused for a moment.

No tension.

No watchful eyes.

No fear.

Just silence.

The good kind.

She closed her eyes briefly.

And for the first time in a long time—

She felt like she could breathe.

Cracks Begin

Back at the house, things were already shifting.

Shadow was restless.

It kept moving from one room to another, barking occasionally, whining at the closed door as if expecting Meera to walk back in.

Savitri tried to calm it.

"Enough! Sit!"

But the dog didn't listen the way it used to.

It paced.

Agitated.

Uneasy.

Arjun watched quietly.

Something felt… off.

Even Shadow seemed different.

That night, Arjun entered his room.

The bed looked bigger.

Colder.

Empty.

For the first time, there was no one on the other side.

No quiet breathing.

No presence.

He sat down slowly, his mind replaying the last few moments again and again.

"Then stop me."

Her voice.

Clear.

Certain.

And his silence.

He clenched his fists.

Why hadn't he said anything?

Why hadn't he just… chosen?

Because he was afraid.

Afraid of hurting his mother.

Afraid of breaking the balance.

Afraid of change.

And now—

He had lost everything anyway.

A Mother's Fear

Savitri stood alone in her room, staring at the ritual box.

For the first time, she didn't open it immediately.

Her mind was restless.

Things were slipping.

Not going the way she had planned.

"She won't survive without this house," she whispered to herself.

But the words didn't sound convincing.

From outside, Shadow's sudden loud bark broke her thoughts.

Annoyed, she stepped out.

"Why are you behaving like this?"

But the dog didn't calm down.

It growled slightly.

At nothing.

Or maybe—

At something only it could sense.

For a brief second, unease crossed Savitri's face.

A New Beginning

In the new house, Meera sat near the window, holding a glass of water.

The night was quiet.

Peaceful.

Raghav had already arranged everything he could.

"Rest," he had told her before going to his room.

And she intended to.

But before lying down, she stood in front of the small temple.

Her hands folded slowly.

"This time… I won't be weak," she whispered.

Her voice didn't shake.

It didn't break.

It carried something new.

Determination.

She placed her hand gently over her stomach again.

"You're safe now."

Chapter Ending

Back in the old house—

Arjun stood near the same door Meera had walked out from.

His hand rested against it.

As if trying to feel something that was no longer there.

Inside, Savitri watched from a distance.

Her control was slipping.

Her son was changing.

And for the first time—

She didn't know how to stop it.

Shadow let out a low, uneasy howl.

Not aggressive.

Not calm.

But something in between.

As if the house itself knew—

The balance had shifted.

And nothing…

Would go back to the way it was.
