Cherreads

Chapter 10 - Chapter 10

I was not aware that I had fallen asleep on the desk. Assumably, I am experiencing little pain in my neck. As I was busy organizing my hair, the later night incident flashed in my mind once again. I do not wish to be involved in other peoples affairs so, I decided to limit my research thereafter.

I had ordered a cup of coffee to start with the day if we call it that. As I take a sip of the cold black coffee, the image of the white substance emerged in my subconscious mind. I find it very unlikable when I am unable to control my imagination. This time I directly tried to interfere with something. "Moreover, this is not good! I-it had left exposed to my own vulnerability. I shall not interfere anymore."

I slowly leave that coffee on the table and shift my attention to my task. I focus on modifying my new firewalls. Needless to say my identity and my computer is my first priority.

I didn't realize it was already afternoon, until I felt the intense, harsh sunlight fall over my hands. It also occurred to me that I didn't have breakfast which suddenly strike me with a sense of hunger in my body. I finally decided to move away from my computer and go out.

I find myself standing before a small café. Without further delay I ordered myself two cheeseburgers and a glass of mojito, nothing fancy. The café has one-way glass windows, from the inside, I had a crystal-clear view of the busy street, but from the outside, the reflective glass looked completely pitch-black. No one outside could see me watching. The glass interface from where I am sitting, the front street is clearly visible to me. I decided to take my time and enjoy the meal.

I look at my cell phone for any other indication, but there is none so, I put it back in my pocket and take a big bite of the burger, while taking my precious time to enjoy the taste, I diverted my eyes to have the view of the front street.

Across the street I noticed a gray jacket. I immediately stopped chewing. The man is standing next to a closed shop leaning against the wall while his cell phone remains held by his right hand. I instantly recognized the person. Thomas Johnson,"What could he possibly be doing here?"

I take a second bite of my cheeseburger. There are many people walking between us, the distance is long enough to not let me see his clear expression. Although he is continuously looking over his shoulders, I could predict that much from his posture.

My assumption is that Mr. Johnson is waiting for somebody.

I lowered my burger and checked my cell phone for any indication of interference. There is none. "Good. I have time." I decided to eat slowly and wait alongside Thomas Johnson.

It's been an hour, I could see Thomas getting irked as he started circling the area impatiently. Admitably, I find it quite entertaining.

After half an hour, I am quietly having a cup of coffee and Thomas Johnson has sat himself down on the pavement. An odd looking man walked up to Thomas while eyeing his surroundings. The man stopped at a little distance from Thomas and had turned his back to him.

I took another sip of my coffee. The mysterious man has long beards which cover half of his face and the other half covers by a large hat. The man pulled out his cell phone as if he was trying to contact someone. Unsurprisingly, Thomas seems to receive a phone call.

It appears, they are having a conversation through their cell phone which I find very suspicious as both of the individuals are currently present at the location.

I set my coffee cup down, It was an highly unlikely behaviour, and my curiosity occupied me completely. I pulled out my laptop from my bag, and checked if everything was functioning alright and launched a terminal interface.

Because Thomas was using a basic cellular connection without encrypted end-to-end messaging, his cell phone was an easy target. I opened an automated network toolkit I had script-built months ago. Since I already had his device's unique identifiers cached from previous monitoring, I initiated my programmed software GlassPulse, tricking his phone's radio into routing its signal through a temporary local access point I controlled.

I waited, and nothing happened. Later within a minute, the active call stream was detected. I plugged my wireless earbuds in, hit Decrypt, and Thomas's frantic voice spilled before me. But to my disappointment the voice came, sounding very badly distorted.

There is a strong beeping sound coming from the other side of the phone call. I can't interpret the signal, nor I could connect with the other cell phone. I couldn't make up for what is being talked about, so I put down my earbuds and immediately disconnected the device. "Hmm, pretty interesting."

I could try filtering out the noise from my computer, although I am not sure to what extent it could be filtered.

I shifted my attention to my remaining coffee and started to have it, completely ignoring those two outside. After some time, they left the place with my mind in peace.

I decided to return to the motel after purchasing some necessary items which somehow included an African Lavender, late night chocolates for me and cat food. I can't help recalling that little thing while I purchase for myself. I decided to return to the old house later to greet that little thing.
